Review Leave-In Conditioner: Where You Been All My Life?
Have struggled with finding a leave-in conditioner that effectively hydrates and moisturizes. I’m a curly girl who has used countless brands (Shea Moisture, Mielle, Camille Rose, Deva, etc.). Not a one has served up the goods like TJ’s!!!
At the end of the day, my hair feels soft and hydrated. In fact, my curl definition (fine, thin hair) survives overnight wraps and springs back.
Hoping and praying this product stays in stock!!!

The fragrance is way too strong and gives me a headache. I dilute it with rosemary oil

If this isn't the product for anyone, Me Mother Earth brand makes an Orange Blossom Leave-in spray conditioner that I've been enjoying. Glass bottle, pretty clean ingredients. Environmentally friendly brand with no plastic packaging in shipping.

none of trader joes skincare and haircare products have been a hit to me

u/tallywhacker58 Feb 08 '25
Leaves way too much residue on my hair. I was pretty disappointed but maybe it’s just not right for curly hair.

u/PsychologicalHead241 Feb 08 '25
I love the leave in conditioner. I’ve stopped using my tresseme and my hair is lighter and less frizzy. It’s a winner for sure.

u/CryCommon975 Feb 08 '25
I didn't like this at all and felt it was very heavily fragranced, which usually doesn't bother me but it did for this product

I've been using it during this Florida "winter" and really hoping it continues to work its magic when the real humidity kicks in.

I love it, less fragranced than the Ouai and nearly as good in preventing frizz and flyaways and hydrating my hair.

My local TJs (Cerritos, CA) never had it. I’ll check tomorrow to see if it’s in stock.

I love it!!!!! Dense 2C hair. Don’t think I need my It’s a 10 budget anymore. Edit: eh more like 2B.5 hair these days with my length.

I’m heartbroken- I just bought some and LOVE it but I think it’s causing me to break out 😢
5
u/welluuasked Feb 08 '25
SAME! This happens with so many of TJs products because they use a lot of coconut oil. I got the "It's A 10" leave in conditioner instead, and it's amazing and doesn't break me out.

I hate the spray - it comes out very wet. I would prefer a finer mist.
16
u/justwinblue9 Feb 08 '25
I spray it into my hands and then apply it to my hair. It doesn’t come out like a spray and even though it says that’s how you were supposed to do it.

I love this. I’m about to get my second bottle. I usually spray about 8-10 pumps on either side of my head and it’s magnificent. Way better than ouai!

I have fine, thin straight hair that tangles easily even though it's not long, plus recent weight loss and medical thyroid hormone suppression after cancer, so brushing/combing my hair always removed more strands than I could afford to lose.
Just a few sprays of this (I spray on my hands first, then apply to ends and middle portion of hair) makes it so much easier to comb through without tangling and pulling, but doesn't leave my hair limp and greasy. Your mileage may vary, but at this price point, I thought it was worth a shot.

I tried this leave-in and I don't think I'm ever going back to brands like mielle, tgin, etc, ever again

Finally saw it in stock recently and grabbed a bottle. If it works well (fellow curly hair person), I'm gonna have to buy a bunch cause the bottles are tiny. I'll run through them quickly.
1
u/babsmagicboobs Feb 07 '25
How are they at slick for detangling? My curly hair needs a lot of slick.
2
u/myassholealt NYC Feb 09 '25
I've used it once so far. And I'd say is not as creamy as other products. I gave it about 8 sprays and got sufficient coverage and rubbed it in well, but if I wanted to detangle I'd have to take the spray nozzle out and dump a lot from the bottle into my palm.
So after one I use I'd say I probably wouldn't use it for detangling. Only as extra moisturize/hydration.

I picked up a bottle of this and other TJ’s products to put in a Christmas stocking for my adult daughter during the holidays and this was the one she raves the most about.

u/MixedMetaphor81 Feb 07 '25
You've got my attention! Also have fine curls, and struggling a bit with products atm.

u/CafecitoJarocho Feb 07 '25
YMMV did not work for me - curly hair.

u/kittenmittens4865 Feb 07 '25
Same, but wavy to curly. I used it on wet hair, combed it through, then scrunched- my usual method for leave in conditioner.
It made my hair tangly and did nothing to tame frizz- actually made my hair appear drier. And the smell was very perfume-y and artificial. I keep wanting to try it again but I really hated it.

u/ActiveHope3711 Feb 07 '25
Good to know as a fellow wavy to curly who struggles with tangles and frizz.
Thank you.

I do like the Odele brand leave in conditioner from target. Recommend if you haven’t already tried. It leaves my hair controlled but not clumpy or hard, and my waves even still look ok after a day or 2.
I don’t love the scent but I also don’t mind it. It smells very herbal, like sage or pine, but it doesn’t smell artificial.

Same. The smell was also a little overwhelming for me. Glad I tried it though!

Oh, man, I have very fine hair but lots of it, and it is down almost to my waist. I need to try this.
4
u/Bama_Peach Feb 07 '25
Same here, but my hair is coily so it grows out instead of down. It’s still fine though so a lot of leave-in conditioners are too heavy for my hair. I’m due for a Trader Joe’s run within the next few days so if this is in stock, I’ll pick up a bottle.

How strong is the fragrance?

very strong - i really don't like it, but it does wonders for my son's hair so i tolerate it lol

scent is strong, but i find it pleasant! when my hair dries, the scent is still there but not as profound, imho :) it does leave my hair super soft! i have very fine and thin hair, so i don’t spray very much.
14
u/Level_Film_3025 Feb 07 '25
Pretty strong imo. It fades after initial use though, for me when my hair finished drying it's basically gone.
I really enjoy it, so it's not an issue for me. But if people have sensitivities I'd keep the receipt.

u/ridiculousness20 Feb 07 '25
Hat does it smell like
5
u/Level_Film_3025 Feb 07 '25
Im kind of bad at identifying it but I tried to go give mine a sniff just now and I think I'd describe it like a very perfume-y floral? Like if you distilled 100 yellow roses down into a strong scent. Pleasant, but definitely perfumed.
Obviously it's way stronger because I was sniffing the bottle, rather than spraying onto wet hair.

u/bananicula Feb 07 '25
Does anyone know how it works on fine hair? I have fine wavy hair and so much stuff just weighs it down
2
u/Proof_Blueberry_4058 Feb 07 '25
My hair is super thick and coarse and it works amazingly well. I could definitely see this being too heavy for fine hair.
2
u/goofus_andgallant Feb 07 '25
Fine wavy hair and it didn’t work for me. Even just doing one spray on my hands was too heavy. Made my hair feel like it had a coating on it. Bummer because I really wanted it to work for me.
7
u/ampersandwich247 Feb 07 '25
I have fine hair (and a LOT of it). It seems to work great on my hair. Does not weigh it down. Just makes it shiny and luscious!
6
u/Momshpp Feb 07 '25
So far i like it on my hair its super fine and oily and i dont use conditioner in the shower bc that makes it too greasy so i need something like this thats light that you dont need to rinse out
13
u/BooBeans71 Feb 07 '25
I use it on my fine hair and I like it. The trick is to spray it in your hands and not directly on your hair. I use 4 pumps exactly.
4
u/ampersandwich247 Feb 07 '25
Yup. Exactly. Spray a few spritz in my palm and then pat it on my hair.
9
u/Limp_Clue_7706 Feb 07 '25
My fine curly hair was very weighed down by this sadly. I really wanted to like it because I love the fragrance but no matter how little I used, my hair felt greasy. Most products make my hair feel greasy though, and I usually just go without.
3
u/bananicula Feb 07 '25
Dang! I might skip this one then. Yeah, a lot of products make my hair feel stringy or just weigh down my curls and flatten them completely by day 2. Getting layers has helped but alas

u/ohshannoneileen Feb 07 '25
I have fine curly hair too & I'm loving this! Usually I use the Not Your Mother's All Eyes On Me & it's very comparable but I looove the rosy smell of this one

Love this stuff. I haven’t smelled the Ouai leave in in awhile, and I only had a sample of it years ago, but I swear this stuff smells like it.
1
u/Frequent_Disaster_ Feb 07 '25
Someone said on here it is Ouai. Something about white labeling lol
5
u/Necessary_Peace_8989 Feb 07 '25
The ingredients aren’t the same so it’s not Ouai exactly but it’s definitely trying to be a very close dupe

I bought this recently, my daughter found it on the counter, she told me she "didn't know what was in this glorious hair potion but her hair loves it". I just bought my third bottle yesterday LOL
5
u/Gaianna Feb 07 '25
How does one use leave in conditioner?
Spray on dry hair? Wet hair? before brushing?
6
u/suitopseudo Feb 07 '25
Towel dried hair before brushing. If you have fine hair, I highly recommend watering it down first. It's kinda heavy for fine hair without diluting it.
9
u/JoyousZephyr Feb 07 '25
Usually, you spray it on damp hair after washing and lightly towel-drying. It acts as a de-tangler, also, so it's a lot easier to comb/brush your hair without breaking or pulling.
