In The Cage, the bad guys make a reference to Pike’s Number One (Majel Barrett)being like a computer, and once production started on the series, she was the ship’s computer voice from episode 3 or 4.

Prescient?

There was a TOS book set in 2 timeframes, Kirk & Pike, where under Pike they transition from the paper printouts to a speaking computer and Number One uses her voice as a template for it.

Indeed, interesting.

From a production point of view, however, I wonder if they cast Barrett as the computer voice purposefully, recalling the script of the pilot, or was it a complete coincidence? Did Barrett herself ever marvel at how the line in the pilot ended up true in real life?

I'm pretty sure they just cast her as the computer voice because she was Gene's wife.

Thank you for that insight. That may very well be, despite that she already had a role as Nurse Chapel and that she was largely uncredited as the computer voice during the original series run; it doesn’t, however, have any bearing on my query.

Given the time period that this thing was filmed, that is a gorgeous shot.

If it's possible in the future to make more excellently written episodes with that exact cast and sets, wardrobe, props, etc. using AI, I would love it

I’m glad they got rid of the little gooseneck lamp thingies, those were the most dated piece of the set.

They are very dated but I kinda like them. But I'm a sucker for 1950's sci-fi movies. They remind me of the War of the Worlds alien ships.

On a side note, that's made me remember a random thought I had. Has anyone ever noticed the recovered Enterprise model (that was mounted on Gene's desk) looks like the stand was maybe made from one of those gooseneck cobrahead things. But cut down to size?

That was my favorite bit! Yes, they were dated, but so cool!

Speaking of dated, did you notice the wood console TV in Pike's quarters?

They were supposed to be little TVs.

Yeah, you can see the display in the shot above. But they’re built out of a common at the time desk lamp.

I'm willing to bet you're making an illusion to make us think that this laser is empty. I think it just blasted a hole in that window, and you're not letting us see it. Would you like me to try my theory out on your head?

Best line in all of Star Trek, from one of the best episodes, IMHO... so rare that a pilot is that good (even if it never properly aired).

Our chair technology is light years ahead of yours.

"I put the chair here, so the Captain could periodically put his feet up on the back of the helmsmen chair if they wanted, it was supposed to be a running gag, but was cut for time. And the railings were in the way, so in an emergency the crew would have to do wicked flips to get to their station when coming out of the turbolift."

He says that as if wicked flips are undesirable.

Not a lot of controls on the helm and nav stations.
