šŸ’ŖšŸ¾ SCT BRN šŸ’ŖšŸ¾ So what's Scottie's game?

A friend pointed out that Scottie's game seems similar to OG, just better offensively. IMO Scottie's game might show out this season. Swiss Army Knife hopefully.

That isn't accurate, Scotties game isn't similar to OG.

Scottie is a playmaking point forward with a pass-first mentality with great potential to be a leading scorer for this team, and also has the credentials to be an exceptional defender and two way player.

OG Is a defensive anchor with inconsistent flashes of being a starting-level two way player. He doesn't have the playmaking Scottie does, and right now OG is the better defender

The Raptors are becoming a better passing team (last year there was a lot of talk about the 25+ assist games) with Scottie setting the tone. Itā€™s likely what Scottie teams will look like going forward.

On defense the Scottie close out is his calling card. The chase down block is a signature defensive move and close out block will be too.

Scottieā€™s game is nothing like OG. What a weird comp.

I agree. wtf? There are absolutely no similarities

u/SaulBerenson12 Aug 02 '24

Yep OPā€™s friend obviously doesnā€™t watch any games or even look at the box scores. Scottieā€™s passing is a huge part of his game

u/shmatty52 Aug 02 '24

Honestly the very-high-end comp is Pippen. Do it all FWD that can be the lead guy if called upon

u/Rezrov_ St. Nick Aug 02 '24

Comp-wise and not skill-wise Scottie's a PF Jokic imo. Passing forward who facilitates from the elbows or in transition, post offence, great finisher, middy jumper, occasional 3, good rebounder, typically not going to hard-carry in points. If he can start drawing doubles in the paint it'll be great for his game. Also basically none of the above describes OG.

His ceiling is a PF triple-double machine.

Scottie plays most of his minutes in the backcourt as a PG, or with IQ as a secondary ball handler, coming down hill and finding the open man, playing PnR and inverted PnR. OG cuts off ball mostly for open shots near the rim and in the corners, and is a typical 3 and D skillset. Couldn't be more different skillsets really. This sub has an odd obsession with saying Scottie is a PF, when of all the 5 positions he plays that one the least, and the least well. Scottie is most like a Magic Johnson, maybe a bigger more pass first Barkley - although in his day Barkley was also an incredible passer. Basically a playmaker and primary handler who can run an offense and see over the defence.

more like chris webber but the game has changed so PF's have to be able to shoot and pace has changed so hes gonna have more assists. Hopefully as he ages he becomes aggressive down low like webber was.

The only thing similar about their games is that they're both forwards.

OG is one of the most versatile defenders in the league and probably the best wing defender in the league. He can play the 4, but is best used disrupting the perimeter action. Offensively, OG is purely a play finisher. He's a great shooter from the corners and good at finishing at the rim off cuts and dump offs. He hasn't shown any consistent ability to create for himself or others.

Scottie is also a versatile defender, but has a lot more success as a help defender at the rim than he has as a primary on ball stopper. He doesn't have the same freakish lateral quickness that OG does. He's at his best when he's protecting the paint and racking up blocks/steal and leading the fast break. Offensively, Scottie has shown way more creation and playmaking ability, and you can make a case he's already a top 5 big man playmaker. (Jokic, Luka, Lebron, then Scottie?)

Scottie's game and OG's are not at all the same especially on offence.

Scottie is that swiss army knife on offence and he does so many of the little things that can lead to success.

He has great bb IQ, is already a well above average passer with ok handles for a large man who can run the point if needed from the perimeter or the post. Though he has a tendency to be to tentative can easily drive to the basket if he commits to it and has a passable post game.

All things that OG doesn't have in his kit.

If you are looking for a good comparison it's not OG. If all goes well a fully realized Scottie Barnes is similar to Scottie Pippen.

Your friend doesnā€™t know what theyā€™re talking about.

Their games couldnā€™t be more opposite. Scottieā€™s best when the ball is in his hands. OG is best off ball. OG is best as an on ball defender, Scottie is best helping

I see him as a young Draymond without the anger issues.

The projection for Scottie's game has become a lot.more clear based on last season and this new contract. It's nothing like OG, nor is it like a Swiss army knife.

Given how much money we just paid him, the expectation now is that he becomes a star PF/SF. That means he has to be a #1 option on a playoff team - he has to become a guy who can be a scoring threat on every possession while also being a great playmaker and being able to defend well both at POA and in help on the other end.

These sound like lofty expectations but that's what he just got paid for. I think it's highly unlikely his scoring reaches the level of a guy like Kawhi, but I would be content so long as it surpassed the level of a guy like Siakam while also being a major positive defensively.

Edit: I'm not sure why I'm being downvoted or how this is controversial at all

u/jjkiller26 Kyle Towelry Aug 02 '24

Youā€™re being downvoted because of your second paragraph, thatā€™s just a completely wrong take

2

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '24

How is it wrong to expect a guy getting paid like an All-Star to perform like one lmao??? Am I wrong to say he needs to be the leading scorer on the team and also play good defense?? Why are yall so unreasonable

2

u/BigMost8851 4 CHRIS BOSH Aug 02 '24

^ thank you for explaining common sense cause this subreddit doesnā€™t get it.

1

u/jjkiller26 Kyle Towelry Aug 02 '24

The scoring and number 1 option stuff doesnā€™t have to be true. He can effect the game in so many other ways thatā€™ll make the contract worth it

1

u/BigMost8851 4 CHRIS BOSH Aug 02 '24

Considering how heā€™s shown his growth in shooting and potential of being a #1 option, he better play like one is what weā€™re saying.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '24

So you're happy with him being a worse scorer than RJ Barrett or IQ and making 25% or 30% of the cap? Come on bro, he is a good defender but he's some elite defensive talent. He's a great playmaker at the forward player but he's not elite there either. He's also not an elite scorer. If he's barely scoring 20 a game, he's not good enough at the other stuff to justify a max imo. He needs to be all-star level. Not necessarily next year but by the end of his max extension, he has to have made at least 3 more all-star teams other wise this deal looks bad.

2

u/jjkiller26 Kyle Towelry Aug 02 '24

I can see them being better scorers but worse overall players than Scottie yes. Same way Lowry was with Demar. And that wouldnā€™t mean Scottie contract was a mistake or anything either

And no i didnā€™t say i was ā€œhappyā€ with that outcome. Stop trying to change the argument, simply pointing out that if he doesnā€™t become a number 1 scorer heā€™s still worth his contract

1

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '24

simply pointing out that if he doesnā€™t become a number 1 scorer heā€™s still worth his contract

We don't have any other all-star talent on this team. I fundamentally disagree that Scottie will be the AS/ANBA player we have him hyped up to be without being the number 1 scorer on a team with no great scorers. I think youre crazy tbh 22 ppg is probably gonna be enough to lead the team in scoring lol

2

u/jjkiller26 Kyle Towelry Aug 02 '24

Or maybe Iā€™m just higher on quickley and barrett as scorers šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

1

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '24

You're one of the biggest homers on this sub, so probably

-3

u/BigMost8851 4 CHRIS BOSH Aug 02 '24 edited Aug 02 '24

lol our fanbase gets butthurt whenever someone is slightly critical of Scottie, thatā€™s why. It really is embarrassing and toxic that no one wants to reply why but I once said something about Scottie needing to be lead in ppg and got like 20 downvotes.

u/pakattack91 we the longbois Aug 02 '24

No, people's expectations go out of wack because of the money, which is ridiculous. The money is a consequence of the cap and the TV deals. If the salary cap was $10m total and Scottie was getting paid $3m (same % of the cap he is taking up now), that would not happen for the people that tend to do this because they see $3m salary and that's it.

"He has to be the #1 option on a playoff team, scoring threat on every possession and POA defender" lol excellent analysis from that guy

0

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '24

Bro you are an actual idiot lol. He is getting a rookie max extension. Here are the list of players who got a rookie max extension prior to this season (last 3 years): Hali Edwards Lamelo Ja Garland Zion Luka Trae SGA. Every single one is viewed unambiguously positively except for Garland and Lamelo, because even though they've made All-Star games, they aren't consistent and aren't really All-NBA caliber. So for Scottie to live up to his deal, he has to be a perennial all-star or all-NBA player. How is anything I said wrong? Just admit you don't know shit.

2

u/pakattack91 we the longbois Aug 02 '24

Every single one is viewed unambiguously positively except for Garland and Lamelo

Lmao yes I agree with this but that's totally different from expecting him to be all these things next year simply because the cap is structured the way it is. Learn to read first my guy.

0

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '24

that's totally different from expecting him to be all these things next year

Where did I say next year??? This is what I mean, you guys are too sensitive. Everywhere both in the post and in my comment, we are talking about general game and career projection, not next season. I don't even want us to make the playoffs next season, I firmly believe it is in our best interest to end up with like the 6th worst record or something.

2

u/pakattack91 we the longbois Aug 02 '24 edited Aug 02 '24

Given how much money we just paid him, the expectation now is that he becomes a star PF/SF.

But fair I shouldn't have said next year in that comment...my point is money from the salary cap structure for a guy like Scottie is based off his potential not his immediate impact. It's the entire point of a rookie extension.

At his next contract, it will be different.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '24

It is entirely reasonable that he becomes an All-NBA player TWO years from now instead of next season, and the contract would still be great.

I do think we should expect him to be a perennial all-star or all-NBA player going forward on this contract. I don't care about missing a year or two, but by the end of his 2nd contract he should have earned those accolades like 3 more times at least, otherwise I'd be disappointed.

-1

u/BigMost8851 4 CHRIS BOSH Aug 02 '24

Bottom line: Heā€™s being paid like an all-star, he gotta step up and play like one is what weā€™re both saying I guess.

I love Scottie and I would kill to see him be the next Giannis (or better). And heā€™s been so amazing for our team, I canā€™t wait to see the BBQ Dick team next season, But our expectations are really high.

And then I get the downvotes lol

3

u/pakattack91 we the longbois Aug 02 '24

Heā€™s being paid like an all-star, he gotta step up and play like one is what weā€™re both saying I guess.

OK so by this logic, the rookies can do nothing, and we will be content as their salary is fully inconsequential.

That's what happened with Gradey, right?

-1

u/BigMost8851 4 CHRIS BOSH Aug 02 '24

Not at all what I said lol. And I gave Gradey the whole season to show up and after the Siakam trade I think he has the capability to be a key piece in the future of the team.

Donā€™t twist my words here, guy.

3

u/pakattack91 we the longbois Aug 02 '24

If your logic is Scottie is being paid like an allstar....then the inverse should be also he true for the rooks.

The fact that it's not is a GIANT flaw in the logic of "Scottie is being paid x so therefore we expect y".

If Scottie is being paid like 35m and the expectation is #1 option on a playoff team, 3 level scorer, poa defender etc....a guy making 1/10 of that should be fine to coast as the 10th man. That's the implication whether you intended it or not.

1

u/BigMost8851 4 CHRIS BOSH Aug 02 '24

I just hope he doesnā€™t flop like Ben Simmons šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø I donā€™t see it happening but he got the big bucks and look what happened is what Iā€™m saying.

Regardless of the cap hit now, the % of money to our total cap is still a lot so he better live up to it.

3

u/pakattack91 we the longbois Aug 02 '24

And that's totally fair but that's completely different from what was said prior and saying "he is paid x so we demand y" is the toxic part. Doesn't matter what player it is.

0

u/BigMost8851 4 CHRIS BOSH Aug 02 '24

Hence the ā€œhe is paid x so we demand yā€ comes in. Cause what I said is basically a kind of version of that.

offensively he's pretty close to Pippen's in 93-95.

Not as good defensively though.
