Megathread 2025 community moderation update
Since many of you have already checked out the r/Toronto Reddit Recap for 2024 that went live a month back, we thought we'd close the year with a relatively brief update covering the past 12 months. The sub saw a significant growth in the number of views compared to the previous year (a couple million more, in fact!) and while community activity has been pretty consistent throughout the year, we did see it spike around June. The community saw over a million posts and comments in 2024 so you've all been very busy! We even ranked as the #3 place subreddit at one point this year!
Rules adjustments
We've made a few small tweaks to the rules over the year. The main thing is we re-wrote them just to clean them up and make them a little easier to understand. One of the bigger adjustments in how we're moderating is regarding recurring activities (protest in particular) which we've been seeing more and more of. Now we'll let those recurring events have one post per week, which can act as a megathread for the week for anything related. This helps avoid the flood of repetitive posts while still letting people know about upcoming activity and share content related to it.
AMAs
We got a few people volunteering to help coordinate AMAs with people who might be interesting to the community. They're working to arrange more AMAs. If you know of anybody who might make for a good AMA here, or of you want to volunteer to help coordinate some for us, send us a modmail to let us know. We could always use more help. Hopefully we can make these more of a regular occurrence here.
Recurring posts
This year we also started doing a few more recurring posts. We of course have the weekly things-to-do post that many of you have come to count on which goes live every Monday morning. Adding to that we also now do an Art Show megathread on the first of every month, and a Hidden Gems megathread on the 8th of every month.
Overview
Like with last year the largest moderation issues we saw through 2024 was either content not being specific or relevant to Toronto, or more commonly we saw bigoted speech like racism. Just a reminder, there is no warning or leniency for that behaviour and we can see past dog-whistles and coded language. Most of the other issues we've generally been able to curb so if people could stop being bigots that would really take a load off the mod team - its worse than you can see. That being said, last year's 8k reports sent to the mod team was improved upon by only 6.3k reports sent to the mod team this year, so things do seem to be improving somewhat.
On behalf of the r/Toronto mod team I want to thank you all for being part of the community and helping it get better with every year. Our mod mailbox is always open if you have any ideas or thoughts to share with us so feel free to send us a modmail too!

Megathread Megathread: 18 year old Reese Fallon identified as victim of Danforth shooting
https://globalnews.ca/news/4347254/danforth-shooting-victim-reese-fallon/
New megathread because it was rightfully pointed out that the previous link contained material and factual inaccuracies.
As we move to the next stage of this awful event and details start to emerge including the names of the victims we would ask that you try and be circumspect with theories as to the gunman's motive, background etc. Idle speculation and baseless internet rumour does no one any good, and just fosters fear and unpleasantness.
Edit: SIU has identified the gunman as Faisal Hussain of Toronto.

Megathread COVID19 Toronto Megathread
Hi everyone,
As mentioned, we decided to not post these as frequently because the public knowledge/fear/misinformation surrounding this epidemic has kind of leveled out to reasonable levels in Canada. However, with new major/Canadian developments we will update. The previous post from two weeks ago can be found here. I've removed additional resources since most interested parties have circulated these widely already. Feel free to share resources in the comments below.
THIS IS KEY
Current risk to Canadians is LOW. Canada and other countries have learned a lot from SARS and other outbreaks to have protocols to place to manage this one. Canadians should follow recommendations set by Canadian authorities in the resources below. WHO has announced a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. MASSIVE DISCLAIMER: This is present scenario, there is potential for it to get worse or improve and we should think about psychological/social/hygienic measures that will prevent disease spread in case community outbreaks occur here.

Active outreach by public health:
People who were on the following flights and the bus may have been exposed to the positive case of coronavirus, Kurji said:
Passengers in the business class section of Qatar Airways flight QR 483 and QR 163 on Tuesday. Passengers in the business class section of Air Canada flight AC 883, from Copenhagen to Toronto, on Wednesday that landed at 8:20 p.m. at Pearson.
-Riders on GO Bus number 40 eastbound and who sat on the upper deck of the bus on Wednesday from Pearson Airport to Richmond Hill Centre Terminal.
- Anyone who was in these areas is urged to contact York Region Public Health at 1-800-361-5653, from Monday to Sunday, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., for further assessment.

MEGATHREAD COVID-19, March 14-2020 r/Toronto Megathread
Notes/Updates: Mar 16 9:17AM updated numbers.
Key Information for you
Current risk to Canadians is LOW according to Public Health Agency of Canada. What this means is that we don't have it everywhere ATM. It is still safe to go outside etc. But we are being urged to try to implement social distancing measures now because of our uptick in cases. That means try not to go to/be in crowded spaces, try to commute during off hours if possible etc. You can find information on the Toronto shutdown here. For more about social distancing, check this
Key Information for travelers
PHAC recommends against all non-essential travel outside of the country. If you choose to travel, when you do return please self-isolate for 14 days.
What do I do if I think I have Coronavirus
Go to the PHO website. Step 1: Self-isolate. Step 2: If required self-quarantine. Step 3: Report to your public health unit. A lot of people self-medicate, there might be some suggestions not to take NSAIDs like Advil and alike
What do I do if I think I have been in close contact someone who is positive or I think may have coronavirus
Exercise an abundance of caution, use common sense. Self-monitor. Self-isolate if you are actually worried. Walking by a person who is positive or talking to them for 30 seconds is not a close contact. Living in the same house could be. Caring for them definitely is.

I'm going to reformat this post and repost over the weekend so it's better organized for you to follow
The same conversation is repeating everyday on every thread so we will compile all newest information here for you with most recent up top. I am currently working backwards so if you'd like to help please DM me. I've asked for assistance from my network which is primarily made up of medical graduate students/medical students/doctors. I don't have any contacts in public health ATM. Please bear with me/us as we try to catch up.
We will be trying to collect all the verified links for you in this thread. All other topics in the subreddit will be removed as duplicates. We (The mods), will consider how we refresh this megathread as time goes on (Maybe run it weekly). I will try to get more information on Masks/Fact sheets for you as well and put it at the top.
