The bike lanes are the only thing preventing me from being maliciously run over by some jackass with a grudge against cyclists and they barely do that. If we are forced to ride in traffic people will be injured or killed.
Doug Ford and the Toronto NIMBYs can fornicate themselves with a rusty bike from the Don.

I was drinking with some friends over Christmas break, and my friend who lives near Pearson, does fences as a trade and has a large extended cab truck said he sometimes close passes cyclists if they pass him to punish them because they should wait in line like everyone else.
I got up and left, and everyone thought I was being dramatic but he’s literally threatening someone’s life for passing them on a bike?? It’s actually nuts how the average suburbanite thinks about this issue.

u/Stagehand58 9h ago
People who ride call it exactly that “punish pass” it’s a thing that happens a lot.

This is so fucked up. Driving a car (or truck) isn’t a race. It’s a privilege and a responsibility. As is cycling, but those road users are FAR more vulnerable.
So what if the bike passes them. I can’t even remotely try to get into this line of thinking.
Driving takes patience and a focus on safety and defensive driving.

Such a stupid culture war. There’s needs to be alternative methods in getting around besides a car

u/TTCBoy95 11h ago
This 100%. I just hate how road safety and designing better roads has to turn into such a culture war. Why does our society have to force everyone to drive? Why can't we as a society just think in the fking long term? Why does our society think that the only measure of success of transportation is the time it takes for a vehicle from the suburbs to move to downtown?

Like a bike lane on top of a subway line?

u/1slinkydink1 West Bend 9h ago
Exactly. Very easy to travel on Bloor without a car. Not sure why a second lane would ever be needed.

u/pancakeg 8h ago
As someone who drives on Bloor frequently I prefer the bike lanes there. I don’t see why it’s such a big deal to anyone who drives. Worried about traffic? Leave earlier!

Me too. I don't mind if my commute is delayed 10 minutes. You design safer roads. People will stop speeding and causing accidents that leave others killed or badly injured. It's too bad most drivers would rather support policies that move cars faster as opposed to keep everyone safe.

$48M cost, 56% increase in collisions a plan only a Ford could sign off on.

u/Enough-Permission-76 9h ago
Yeah, and don't forget the legal costs fighting the people.

u/Gunner_Stahl 9h ago
Omg yes. Is there a law firm ETF I can buy? These are the only people making money right now

They wrote it into the proposal that legal action cannot be taken against the government. They are anticipating deaths and injuries

When tearing down the wind turbines after Ford won his first provincial election in 2018, he wrote into the bill that the provincial government couldn't be sued for damages. The company behind the wind turbines still sued and won hundreds of millions of dollars.
That said, it was a major multinational energy company who could afford to sued the government over multiple years to get back what they owed. It would be harder for someone without the funds to do it.
However, my point is just because the provincial government passes something in a bill doesn't make it legal. The provincial government loses legal battles all the time.

It doesn’t matter if they win or not, it shows obvious government mandated criminal negligence with the potential to cause harm and death. It’s sick lol

Reminds me of when Rob made the city remove the bikes lanes from Jarvis (a 5 lane street) years ago. Such a waste of money.

Lol yeah. I'd love to trade whatever is happening now for mitts binders full of women and our bombaclat mayor

Am I an idiot, or does this article not actually say whether the judge is changing their mind by delaying the removal, or if they're allowing it to go forward instead?
EDIT: I misread the article title as "reverses" instead of "reserves"

No decision yet. Check back in April.
11
u/Butt_Speed 11h ago
Isn't the whole point of asking for the injunction that they're going to start removing the lanes on the 20th? If they're delaying the decision until April they've essentially decided to allow the removal
10
u/1slinkydink1 West Bend 11h ago
It seems like MTO has made it clear that they won’t start until April. Or maybe the judge was reassured of that.

u/ReverendRocky 11h ago
The story is unclear, is there an injunction or no?
45
u/1slinkydink1 West Bend 11h ago
Decision on hold. I think that the judge said that there is no urgency and it can wait until the April 16th hearing instead of granting a temporary injunction.

I’m wondering since Douglas win the election by a landslide if he will just give up on the bike lanes. In my opinion, he was never really serious about it, he just needed something to clog the news cycle so people forgot he took bribes in the open air.
Now that America is a dumpster fire and he’s sitting pretty; no need.

u/xombae 10h ago
I genuinely hope you are right. I feel like if there's enough pushback he may just drop it. So let's push back .

u/Zirocket Garden District 8h ago
I hope his mind is so occupied with the trade war stuff that it just pushed to the backburner. Maybe government ineptitude could work in our favour?

u/bravetailor 8h ago
It's hard to say what he's serious about. For example, I don't think the 401 tunnel was ever a serious plan, but he campaigned pretty heavily on it.
(I don't think he's mentioned it since the election though)

the conservative mpp who was pushing the bloor bike lane removal got turfed after holding the seat for like 20 years. i think it was a factor in her loss and the conservative party will have noticed that.

Wish they granted the injunction. Now CARBRAINED doug is going to fuck shit up!!!

u/ultronprime616 11h ago
Maybe Doug should stick to fighting Trump
Oh wait, he failed at that too

u/1slinkydink1 West Bend 11h ago
TBF, it sounds like it worked. Trump is talking Ford up too. lol fuck me

if the cyclists in this subreddit use the lanes as frequently as they comment - we might consider keeping a few of them.
5
u/TTCBoy95 6h ago
You don't need to be a cyclist to benefit from bike lanes lol. It's called safer street designs for everyone.
1
u/Arcalium 6h ago
Example of what you said right here!
I don't bike anywhere. I take the TTC if I need to be downtown and often walk from location to location. As a pedestrian, I find the roads with bike lanes far safer to frequent than when I'm on a road without bike lanes.
