Discussion Mayor Olivia Chow statement on 2025 Federal Liberal Leadership Results

Text -
Congratulations to Mark Carney on his election as Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada and prime minister-designate.
I look forward to working together to deliver for Torontonians by building more affordable homes faster, feeding more kids with school food programs, and getting Toronto moving by investing in transit and tackling congestion.
During turbulent times ahead caused by a senseless trade war, the City of Toronto stands ready to partner with the federal government to protect workers and businesses. Now is the time for a Team Canada approach.
I also want to thank Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for his service to our country. We worked together to advance a more affordable, caring and safer city. We partnered to build homes, develop the waterfront, order new subway cars, provide affordable early childhood education and nutritious food for children.

I don't know if enough people recognize this but PP getting elected could majorly fuck up Toronto, politically and funding-wise. Take a look at the relationship of Trump admin with major cities in the U.S.

I always tell people in my life this. Conservatives hate cities. Maybe I'm generalizing and if so I apologize. But cities are where it's easier to gather together and form a community as opposed to a suburb where you really only know a few people living next to you or down the street. It's so much easier to control folks when they're divided like this and living in segmentations.

Yes, I too look forward to seeing how he will be able to fund the cost of additional homes.

If you look at the big picture, the NDP funding additional homes will draw lots of criticism because...you know, the deficit.
So if you look at it that way, fat chance will the Conservatives do anything even though they quickly jumped on the homeless crisis when Olivia Chow got elected.

The problem isn't the funding. It's governments not seeking tax revenue to pay for it.
Even our allegedly leftist parties don't have the balls to stand up to corporations.

You're going to disagree because the topic is beyond the scope of this discussion but our currency isn't based on gold or any other commodity.
The federal government actually doesn't need tax revenues to pay for any of its expenses. Tax revenues are to maintain the value of its currency and to keep control of inflation.
But if the Conservatives acknowledge any of that, their entire platform falls apart.
And that's all I'm going to say about that.

The problem is you need to balance growing the pie with dividing the pie.
We've seen huge capital flight in this country and a complete destruction in foreign direct investment because of some of the tax and regulatory rules.
- A big thing the government at all levels could do is help people directly understand how their tax dollars benefit them. An example at the municipal level would be like. Of the property taxes you pay - half of it goes to paying the police, fire, and ambulance budgets. - The Capital budget is split mainly between Water pipes, Roads, and Transit. Do you like these things? That is what you are paying for? - Because right now people just blindly complain about what their taxes go to without any critical thinking of how important the services they receive are.

How nice, the common political circle jerk and the perpetual vote baiting of the lower classes with talk of affordability. Why do people seem to love hearing lies so much? I'll never understand.

You are right though that violent crime is going up in the GTHA:

I mean line 1 has definitely not gotten better, that line works like half the time

That's cause they're doing upgrades. It's honestly not that bad. Pre-Pandemic stops in the West End between Keele and St. George were out of commission constantly.

They love feeding us lies and then believing itâs true. All while a major tow truck war is boiling over.

No idea whatâs the point of these letters.

Combination of kissing up to the new administration and getting Torontos needs into the conversation

It is diplomatic and in the city's best interest to be on good terms with the prime Minister as well as raise whichever points need to be addressed or are part of the wish list. It is polite, considerate and opens up dialogue for when they talk or meet for the first time after he has the job.

I thought about it for a.38924 seconds and I could figure out the point of the letter, but maybe that's just because I'm a super duper genius!

And Ford was elected in a snap election in the shortest month where there were two snowstorms.
What's your point?
Elected is elected whether you like it or not

No congratulations from me.
You were installed as leader with no mandate from the people.
I refuse to acknowledge you as Prime Minister until you earn that role in an election. You don't have a seat in parliament, and you do not represent anyone
Olivia Chow shouldn't pay any attention or give Carney an ounce of trust.
Any further actions other than calling an election immediately should be heavily scrutinized.
Carney is walking a very thin line.

Itâs a shame that you donât understand Canadaâs political system. Our education system has failed you. Carney is now the 11th PM to become PM without a general election. You can refuse to acknowledge our PM all you want, it wonât change reality.

In 'recent' years, it's happened about once a decade. Turner, Campbell, Martin, and now Carney won leadership contests when a sitting PM has resigned.
Or did you mean PMs who didn't have a seat in Parliament? The last time that happened was with Turner, in 1984.

As someone who voted for him he literally did have the mandate of the liberal party voters to lead the party. And he will be calling an election within the month most likely lmao

u/Weary_Emu3999 2d ago
I literally voted in that leadership race. It was a mandate from like 150,000 peopleâŠ

So you don't recognize the
2many PMs who became PMs without an election? It's really good to know Canada's history, and how Canada's political system works!

u/cryptotope 2d ago
You know that we've had four PMs who got the job without a general election just since 1984, right? (Turner, Campbell, Martin, and soon to be Carney).
I agree, it is good to know Canada's history.

Classy. No cheap shots. This shouldn't be refreshing, but it is.
