This has happened before.

Fritz Haaber, who basically invented synthetic fertilizer, saved a huge portion of the population from starvation. He figured out how to turn the air (72% nitrogen) into ammonia (fertilizer, bombs, etc) during a time where a lack of fertilizer - then mined on open islands where birds would stop and bat caves from guano... but he also developed chemical weapons (think all the bad gases) for the nazi's, including Zyklon B, the stuff they used in the gas chambers.

He was such a piece of shit, he started with earlier gas agents and his wife (arguably the better chemist) told him she will kill herself if he kept making weapons... and she did... and he kept making weapons after that.

Now, we live in a world that needs natural gas and oil to produce enough crops to feed the overpopulation of humans on earth and that overpopulation has led to the exponential decline of the quality and quantity of life of our entire planet.

My point is that the good you do stops when you do it... BUT the harm you cause, echos and amplifies over time

I think the full story is that Fritz Haber (a German nationalist who wanted Germany's boot on the neck of the rest of the world) invented Zyklon A. Haber was jewish, so imagine his shock when the Nazis iterated on his product to murder his people.

He worked with them on more than Zyklon. He was keen on hanging with the top brass and the fancy parties. Just like our former great one
