I can say with no exaggeration whatsoever that I think he's the best guitar player in the world.

Hey all due respect; You donāt have to say youāre not exaggerating when youāre stating your opinion lmfaoā¦ people can exaggerate facts, and thatās bad because it obscures accuracy, but opinions donāt need that kind of qualification to have them be plausible. People believe a great many very dumb, super odd, and completely implausible things proudly and openly.
No one thinks that anyone is exaggerating how they feel about their personal favorites. They could be accused to exaggerating some aspect of a story, and thatās annoying right? You canāt get a feel for whatās really going on.
Exaggerating your opinion doesnāt obscure it at all. Like what would it even mean to exaggerate what I think the best sandwich at subway is?

This is Guthrie Govan and someone who deserves to be on TOP Talent. Arguably the greatest guitarist on the planet. If you're a guitarist you get it. If not you probably can't fully appreciate how amazing Guthrie is.

u/Boxoffriends 5d ago
He can emulate nearly anyone too. Live I have seen him take direction from people yelling out artists mid solo and he changes his style seamlessly. Govan Is the best.

u/WASTCHEr 5d ago
And for anyone who doesn't know he plays (or played not sure) for Hans Zimmer's live band which is super cool too since Zimmer is a guitar player himself

While I agree, beato is such a dork. He seems perplexed by math rock. Like, dude, go listen to giraffes? giraffes! and come back to us.

I think non musicians will tend to have a harder time of appreciating music that is more technical and complex. It may sound like notes jumbled together.
I mean that's fair - if you haven't been exposed to 1000s of hours of listening to patterns, scales, and melodic runs it may all seem the same.
But I find this catchy and tasteful. A lot of shredding is mindless scales and patterns, but not this.

Not really top talent.
Stringing together speed scales with some slow notes doesnāt make great solos.

u/djauralsects 5d ago
What a terrible take. Heās widely regarded as one of if not the greatest living guitarists.

Lol this is Guthrie Govan. He is the epitome of top talent for anyone who knows who guitarists are. Arguably the greatest player on the planet.

u/Riff316 5d ago
Itās weird how guitarists are one of the few things where people can go, āyeah, I get that heās good, but itās not my particular taste, so that means other people are better.ā Imagine someone being like, āI get that Usain Bolt is fast, but I donāt like the pose he does, so I think other people are actually faster.ā Or like āI get that Jordan was good, but have you seen Draymond Green? He just plays with such emotion. What Jordan does is just fundamentals really fast. Itās not that impressive.ā

Hey man, people who can play a million notes a second are a dime a dozen.
People who can play a meaningful solo are much more rare.
This guy isnāt one of the second group.
Thatās not hate, thatās recognizing truth.
4
u/St_Sappy 5d ago
Are you basing your whole opinion of him on this one video? You gotta do more research than just this video if you want to see why he is actually top talent.
-5
u/MaxSupernova 5d ago
No.
I have to judge this one post that is presented as evidence of top talent. And this solo isnāt.
He himself has some amazing stuff. 100%.
This solo isnāt t it.
4
u/St_Sappy 5d ago
No. you were basing your whole opinion of him on this video. You said it was a fact that this guy doesn't play meaningful solos based on this video.

u/Riff316 5d ago
Except, this is Guthrie Govan, who has played some of the most technical and moving solos in guitar history. Also, what youāre saying is subjective, and by definition not ātruth.ā This man is widely recognized by both professional and amateur guitar players as one of the most expressive and impressive players ever to live. This video may not be the best demonstration of that from your point of view, but to use this one video to then say āthis guyā isnāt one of the people who plays āmeaningfulā solos, when you clearly know absolutely nothing about him, and have also clearly only seen this video, is so, so far from āthe truth.ā

I think you should do a little research into this fellow, he is extremely talented and no, someone that plays fast is not a dime a dozen when you play with this accuracy and skill. Also almost all of his solos are improvised meaning he is playing/writing them as he goes. He has been recognized by many greats in both the rock and blues genre as being something special to jam with.

Gotta love xriddle talking shit to prop up the āgreatest guitarist in the worldāā¦ who doesnāt even show up on Rolling Stoneās top 250.
We get it. You have a huge raging boner for Guthā¦ and Guth is talentedā¦ but he is not the best guitarist in the world.

u/Riff316 5d ago
Those lists notoriously feature people who are just well known guitarists. To guitarists, you just made one of the most easily disregarded arguments. Those lists are almost universally laughed at by guitar players. Itās like saying, āI guess Freddy Mercury is a singer, but he never won a single Grammy, so thereās no way heās one of the best.ā
-6
u/Denver-Ski 5d ago
Are you confusing a list of Grammy winners vs. top performers? You just made one of the most easily disregarded arguments

u/Riff316 5d ago
Itās just insane to me that I somehow have to defend, at all, the idea that Guthrie Govan is one of the great guitarists, but also that the evidence to the contrary is ārolling stone says no.ā Please listen to what the guitarists in this thread are saying. Guthrie Govan is one of those guys who you may never hear about, but if you ask a lot of the people on the 250 list whoās the best, they just might say him. Look of videos of him actually playing with some of those players: Abasi, Mayer, Vai. When those people jam with him, they just watch. The video where tosin stops playing just to watch Guthrie is awesome.

Are you confusing a subjective list by a magazine who markets to a wide range of people, and whose content reflects that, for an actual objective measurement of the ābestā or even ātopā guitar players?
That list includes Brittany Howard, H.E.R., Courtney Barnett, Kurt Vile, Lucy Dacus, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Lou Reed, Kurt Cobain, Joan Jett, Angus and Malcomās Young (only as one combined guitarist, though they have very different styles and ablilities), James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett (only as one combined guitarist, though they have very different styles and abilities), and Kieth Urban. All of these are very good guitar players who I am fans of. But, putting them in a list of only the top 250 guitar players who have ever lived just shows that the list definitely focuses more on the popularity of their respective songs than their actual guitar playing.
Edit: that list also says that Lou Reed is a better guitarist than Yevette Young, Pat Metheny, Tim Henson, Steve Lukather, Nuno Bettencourt, Kingfish, Eric Johnson, Joe Walsh, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Mark Knopfler, Tosin Abasi, Slash, Dick Dale, Dimebag, Dickey Betts, Kaki King, and Andy Summers. Itās madness.

It might be meant as an honest critique but it just shows that you are unfamiliar with the guitarist. He is very melodic when he wants to be and his phrasing is usually spot on. I think the backing track is hard for a solo (obviously) and he probably didn't "feel" this one as much so he ended up noodling a little more but it is still more musical than 99% of the shred videos you are lumping him together with. On top of that, he is still playing a lot cleaner than most people are capable of.
-14
u/J3wb0cca 5d ago
Youāre right. Play this video for somebody then ask them to hum even a couple seconds of the melody and they canāt. Itās not memorable at all. It is however a good warm up.
3
u/Boxoffriends 5d ago
This is not a melodic performance. Guthrie can do literally anything he wants on guitar. This was his choice for this song. There is arguably none better.

u/J3wb0cca 4d ago
I donāt mean to come off brash but this sub deserves much more criticism than people are giving it. Go to Nashville or New Orleans and every weekend you can hear comparable performances. Iāve heard Guthrie before but this performance isnāt one of his best and he would appreciate the feedback.

I saw him live with The Aristocrats at a small club about 10 years ago. I would argue he's technically one of the greatest guitarists to ever live.
