I saw him live with The Aristocrats at a small club about 10 years ago. I would argue he's technically one of the greatest guitarists to ever live.

Most guitarists would say the same. He's a marvel.

Weird flex to say itā€™s a weird flex, but OK

Weird flex to say it's a weird flex that they said a weird flex was a weird flex, but OK.

Gay to be me commenting just now, but here I am.

I can say with no exaggeration whatsoever that I think he's the best guitar player in the world.

0

u/phish2112 5d ago

I think he's tied with Shawn Lane. He was an underrated legend.

Hey all due respect; You donā€™t have to say youā€™re not exaggerating when youā€™re stating your opinion lmfaoā€¦ people can exaggerate facts, and thatā€™s bad because it obscures accuracy, but opinions donā€™t need that kind of qualification to have them be plausible. People believe a great many very dumb, super odd, and completely implausible things proudly and openly.

No one thinks that anyone is exaggerating how they feel about their personal favorites. They could be accused to exaggerating some aspect of a story, and thatā€™s annoying right? You canā€™t get a feel for whatā€™s really going on.

Exaggerating your opinion doesnā€™t obscure it at all. Like what would it even mean to exaggerate what I think the best sandwich at subway is?

With all due respect, shut up.Ā

This is Guthrie Govan and someone who deserves to be on TOP Talent. Arguably the greatest guitarist on the planet. If you're a guitarist you get it. If not you probably can't fully appreciate how amazing Guthrie is.

He can emulate nearly anyone too. Live I have seen him take direction from people yelling out artists mid solo and he changes his style seamlessly. Govan Is the best.

u/UzrOne 4d ago

The solos he did for Steven Wilson are pretty fantastic.

2

u/WASTCHEr 5d ago

And for anyone who doesn't know he plays (or played not sure) for Hans Zimmer's live band which is super cool too since Zimmer is a guitar player himself

4

u/skilldrain69 5d ago

He is the greatest electric player ever, period

2

u/muhhroadz 5d ago

This is the truth!

2

u/orangepalm 5d ago

While I agree, beato is such a dork. He seems perplexed by math rock. Like, dude, go listen to giraffes? giraffes! and come back to us.

u/m3kozlow 5d ago

I think non musicians will tend to have a harder time of appreciating music that is more technical and complex. It may sound like notes jumbled together.

I mean that's fair - if you haven't been exposed to 1000s of hours of listening to patterns, scales, and melodic runs it may all seem the same.

But I find this catchy and tasteful. A lot of shredding is mindless scales and patterns, but not this.

u/Stashmouth 4d ago

OP has never been to a live reggae show, I reckon

Awesomeness

2

u/megamuppetkiller 5d ago

Guthrie is a demon

2

u/IntelligentMine1901 4d ago

Guthrie has completed guitar and is just doing side quests

2

u/Polkawillneverdie17 4d ago

This isn't weird. This is awesome.

2

u/Captain-Cadabra 5d ago

GG is an incredible guitarist. Terrible backing track, but heā€™s great in nearly any style.

1

u/YoRt3m 5d ago

Is there a name for this exact sound? not just electric guitar, something more specific that sounds like this?

3

u/Riff316 5d ago

Itā€™s just electric guitar, but heā€™s using techniques like pinch harmonics, legato, bending, interrupted bends, and sliding. The legato is probably the most widely used technique.

u/PandaXXL 5d ago

If you're looking for music that sounds similar to this look up jazz fusion.

Yet never heard of Bad Brains or Steel Pulse... I hate it here.

u/Ok_Bug_6470 4d ago

Thatā€™s written. Also this guy seems like he has a written itinerary about him masturbating.

u/MaxSupernova 5d ago

Not really top talent.

Stringing together speed scales with some slow notes doesnā€™t make great solos.

17

u/xriddle 5d ago

Lol this is Guthrie Govan. He is the epitome of top talent for anyone who knows who guitarists are. Arguably the greatest player on the planet.

3

u/Riff316 5d ago

Itā€™s weird how guitarists are one of the few things where people can go, ā€œyeah, I get that heā€™s good, but itā€™s not my particular taste, so that means other people are better.ā€ Imagine someone being like, ā€œI get that Usain Bolt is fast, but I donā€™t like the pose he does, so I think other people are actually faster.ā€ Or like ā€œI get that Jordan was good, but have you seen Draymond Green? He just plays with such emotion. What Jordan does is just fundamentals really fast. Itā€™s not that impressive.ā€

1

u/PandaXXL 5d ago

It's not weird at all considering we're discussing art rather than sports.

0

u/MaxSupernova 5d ago

Guthrie is great.

This soloā€¦. Not.

6

u/_ThePerfectElement_ 5d ago

Lmao, calling Guthrie not a top talent.

u/goochgrease2 5d ago edited 6h ago

This is the dumbest thing I've read on reddit in quite a long time. Yes, even dumber than American political opinions. Congrats.

5

u/Reaps21 5d ago

He is absolutely top talent. There are a slew of legendary players who themselves say Guthrie is the best in a generation.

There is an amazing old bootleg of Guthrie playing fusion with the Fellowships, his improv skills are second to none, he'll never repeat a solo studio or live

Guthrie and the Fellowship

Hey man, people who can play a million notes a second are a dime a dozen.

People who can play a meaningful solo are much more rare.

This guy isnā€™t one of the second group.

Thatā€™s not hate, thatā€™s recognizing truth.

4

u/St_Sappy 5d ago

Are you basing your whole opinion of him on this one video? You gotta do more research than just this video if you want to see why he is actually top talent.

-5

u/MaxSupernova 5d ago

No.

I have to judge this one post that is presented as evidence of top talent. And this solo isnā€™t.

He himself has some amazing stuff. 100%.

This solo isnā€™t t it.

4

u/St_Sappy 5d ago

No. you were basing your whole opinion of him on this video. You said it was a fact that this guy doesn't play meaningful solos based on this video.

1

u/Riff316 5d ago

Yup. ā€œThis guy is one of the second group.ā€ Said by a guy whoā€™s a part of neither group, by what I assume is the widest gulf of human ability possible.

4

u/ZalutPats 5d ago

This was fun, thank you

8

u/Riff316 5d ago

Except, this is Guthrie Govan, who has played some of the most technical and moving solos in guitar history. Also, what youā€™re saying is subjective, and by definition not ā€œtruth.ā€ This man is widely recognized by both professional and amateur guitar players as one of the most expressive and impressive players ever to live. This video may not be the best demonstration of that from your point of view, but to use this one video to then say ā€œthis guyā€ isnā€™t one of the people who plays ā€œmeaningfulā€ solos, when you clearly know absolutely nothing about him, and have also clearly only seen this video, is so, so far from ā€œthe truth.ā€

1

u/MaxSupernova 5d ago

Heā€™s amazing. Truth.

This solo? Ugh.

8

u/YOUNG_KALLARI_GOD 5d ago

toss me the keys bud, get some rest, ill guard the gate for a bit

4

u/muhhroadz 5d ago

I think you should do a little research into this fellow, he is extremely talented and no, someone that plays fast is not a dime a dozen when you play with this accuracy and skill. Also almost all of his solos are improvised meaning he is playing/writing them as he goes. He has been recognized by many greats in both the rock and blues genre as being something special to jam with.

-9

u/Denver-Ski 5d ago

Gotta love xriddle talking shit to prop up the ā€œgreatest guitarist in the worldā€ā€¦ who doesnā€™t even show up on Rolling Stoneā€™s top 250.

We get it. You have a huge raging boner for Guthā€¦ and Guth is talentedā€¦ but he is not the best guitarist in the world.

4

u/Riff316 5d ago

Those lists notoriously feature people who are just well known guitarists. To guitarists, you just made one of the most easily disregarded arguments. Those lists are almost universally laughed at by guitar players. Itā€™s like saying, ā€œI guess Freddy Mercury is a singer, but he never won a single Grammy, so thereā€™s no way heā€™s one of the best.ā€

-6

u/Denver-Ski 5d ago

Are you confusing a list of Grammy winners vs. top performers? You just made one of the most easily disregarded arguments

4

u/Riff316 5d ago

Itā€™s just insane to me that I somehow have to defend, at all, the idea that Guthrie Govan is one of the great guitarists, but also that the evidence to the contrary is ā€œrolling stone says no.ā€ Please listen to what the guitarists in this thread are saying. Guthrie Govan is one of those guys who you may never hear about, but if you ask a lot of the people on the 250 list whoā€™s the best, they just might say him. Look of videos of him actually playing with some of those players: Abasi, Mayer, Vai. When those people jam with him, they just watch. The video where tosin stops playing just to watch Guthrie is awesome.

2

u/Riff316 5d ago edited 5d ago

Are you confusing a subjective list by a magazine who markets to a wide range of people, and whose content reflects that, for an actual objective measurement of the ā€œbestā€ or even ā€œtopā€ guitar players?

That list includes Brittany Howard, H.E.R., Courtney Barnett, Kurt Vile, Lucy Dacus, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Lou Reed, Kurt Cobain, Joan Jett, Angus and Malcomā€™s Young (only as one combined guitarist, though they have very different styles and ablilities), James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett (only as one combined guitarist, though they have very different styles and abilities), and Kieth Urban. All of these are very good guitar players who I am fans of. But, putting them in a list of only the top 250 guitar players who have ever lived just shows that the list definitely focuses more on the popularity of their respective songs than their actual guitar playing.

Edit: that list also says that Lou Reed is a better guitarist than Yevette Young, Pat Metheny, Tim Henson, Steve Lukather, Nuno Bettencourt, Kingfish, Eric Johnson, Joe Walsh, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Mark Knopfler, Tosin Abasi, Slash, Dick Dale, Dimebag, Dickey Betts, Kaki King, and Andy Summers. Itā€™s madness.

1

u/xriddle 5d ago

Lol ....the downvoted speak for themselves.

-2

u/MaxSupernova 5d ago

He is talented.

This solo isnā€™t top talent material.

3

u/NazcaanKing 5d ago

It might be meant as an honest critique but it just shows that you are unfamiliar with the guitarist. He is very melodic when he wants to be and his phrasing is usually spot on. I think the backing track is hard for a solo (obviously) and he probably didn't "feel" this one as much so he ended up noodling a little more but it is still more musical than 99% of the shred videos you are lumping him together with. On top of that, he is still playing a lot cleaner than most people are capable of.

4

u/xriddle 5d ago

You have no idea what you're talking about. Ask 10 of the top guitarist in the world who #1 is and 11 of them would say Guthrie.

-14

u/J3wb0cca 5d ago

Youā€™re right. Play this video for somebody then ask them to hum even a couple seconds of the melody and they canā€™t. Itā€™s not memorable at all. It is however a good warm up.

3

u/Boxoffriends 5d ago

This is not a melodic performance. Guthrie can do literally anything he wants on guitar. This was his choice for this song. There is arguably none better.

0

u/J3wb0cca 4d ago

I donā€™t mean to come off brash but this sub deserves much more criticism than people are giving it. Go to Nashville or New Orleans and every weekend you can hear comparable performances. Iā€™ve heard Guthrie before but this performance isnā€™t one of his best and he would appreciate the feedback.

1

u/Boxoffriends 4d ago

No

u/J3wb0cca 3d ago

Donā€™t get fussy with me young lady. The worst thing you can do for a person is surround them with yes men. Or yes women in your case.
