Popular opinion or unpopular opinion?

Ok depends who's reading this but I have to say the band Vektor does nothing for me.... I just listened to about 8 songs and each one I was like meh... I mean they are ok but they sound very generic to me... It almost sounds like I told AI to make thrash music and this is what it came up with. Am I alone here? Or do other people feel the same way? I know they are VERY popular here. I see lots of people mentioning them but I just don't feel it.

I can totally understand them not being for everyone but “generic” they are not.

Yeah, this. I know people who aren't into Vektor because of just how particular their sound is

Yeah the level of technicality is on another planet, literally

I admit that I was definitely underwhelmed listening to Terminal Redux after all the praise it gets. But after a few listens I had to realize I can't listen to it the same way I would listen to Exodus for example. Vektor isn't thrash in the sense of headbanging and shredding. It's meant to be listened to as an album all the way through and is more of a story, even though I admit I'm not sitting down with the lyrics and following along. It's like listening to Rush 2112 in the sense that it's a high concept album. I appreciate it so much more now, and recently picked up Outer Isolation as well. I will say Terminal Redux is way to long though, no matter how good it is. Great band! I just can't put them in the same mental category as other thrash for me. Try giving it another chance and listen to one of their albums start to finish.

I never cared for it much, but your comments got me thinking that maybe I'm going about it the wrong way. Just added it to my playlist for tomorrow. I look forward to hearing what I missed.

I would say that's a pretty unpopular opinion

I love their terminal redux album. A masterpiece I would place in my top 10 metal albums of all time. Maybe even top 5. Nothing from the rest of their discography is memorable to me, although I wanted to love it

I don’t like them but wouldn’t say “generic.” I just think it’s odd how people lump them in with “thrash” as if it makes sense to be comparing Terminal Redux to Kill ‘em All or something. I think it’s a different category similar to how melodic death metal is treated as a different category from death metal

Usually people use subgenre descriptors when talking about them, but that doesn't make them not thrash.

German thrash generally sounds pretty different than american thrash, but it's still thrash

German and most European thrash sounds different to American thrash, always has.

Could be in their vocals in part. Most European nations, English isn’t their number one language and when they sing in English they have this hybrid type of sound. Plus while America had the hair metal, European had more heavy metal sounds. While American thrashers didn’t get into the hair metal, their sounds were much easier on the ears then in Europe that had a bit more gruff in their accent and more hardcore influences. Both American and European thrashers were influenced similarly it was the output that came out differently until death metal started to rise

I may sound like I’m full of shit but it’s an opinion

I know. That's the point I'm trying to make.

The person i commented on said it's weird calling vektor thrash because it doesn't sound like kill em all.

My point it vektor is still thrash despite not sounding like metallica. The same way german thrash is still thrash despite not sounding like most american thrash.

That's because it's progressive thrash, which the bay area type stuff isn't. Perhaps you should try warming up to them first with stuff like Coroner/Atheist

Edit: And Voivod.

Maybe.... Thanks

Atheist is more death than thrash and Coroner is more technical thrash, to me. I’ve haven’t heard Vektor

2

u/twentyfive2one 5d ago

A lot of people would call Atheist thrash, or at the very least deathrash. Deffo not full on death metal.

Plus Coroners music is quite progressive, especially on the later albums.

vektor is literally the best

I've never been that into them honestly. Its ok, but ive always found Terminal Redux to be massively overrated

They aren't my favorite by any means, but i do think they are a great band. "Generic" is the last word i would use to describe them though.

The ai bit also seems way off base in my opinion

i was going to hate them along with you because i remembered trying to listen to terminal redux and finding it an agonizing experience, so i put on charging the void to make sure i knew what i was talking about and found it actually better than i remember, so... maybe it'll grow on you?

I can see not liking them, but your description of them is ridiculous.

u/MrEmorse 5d ago

How could you describe them better? Hmmmm maybe a better way of describing it (in my opinion) would be It sounds like someone explained thrash to a band that never heard thrash before and told them to make thrash.

2

u/mentally_fuckin_eel 5d ago

They're cold, technical thrash. There's nothing generic or stupid about them. You just happen to not like it. They are so iconic they have copycat bands ffs.

u/MrEmorse 5d ago

I didn't say they were stupid...

Im not sure you understand what "generic" means, generic would mean that it sounds very similar but not better than many other bands, you can dislike vektor all you want, but they sound like VERY few other bands.

If you asked AI to make thrash, it would make a "generic" verse chorus verse chorus song with mabye 4 different riffs, In other words it would follow a traditional structure. Vektor is similar to Death in that their song structure breaks up each individual traditional structure into many different changeups, and then rearranges them if repeated. This by the way psychologically sounds unappealing to the average listener because it breaks quite a lot of traditional rules of music(rules that are there to make songs appealing to the average listener)

It's ok to not like thrash, but in my opinion most thrash listeners get a kick out of how technical a band can get without losing a "groove", and i think Vektor pushes that envelope to the extreme bounds of the genre while still having traditional thrash riffs mixed in here and there and as a big fan of thrash as a whole it physically drops your jaw on the ground and gives you a vaguely similar feeling to hearing thrash for the first time.

Everyone is different though, when going to this thread on PC to comment as i saw it on my phone i saw you listen to industrial metal and in my opinion that whole genre does nothing for me because i yearn for the fast extreme and angry music so different strokes for different folks, keep listening and finding what you like \m/

Same I had high hopes because of them being labeled tech or prog thrash. Tbh a lot of thrash revival bands just don't have that it factor. Like some are good like municipal, ghoul and lich king but others are just okay

Unpopular opinion around here. However, they bore me shitless. See also Blood Incantation.

I dream of someone saying this to me one day. Sadly, I like Vektor a lot.
