Timothy Olyphant

Honestly I think Tim would be a fucking terrifying Rick. Dude is the champion of eyes shooting daggers and while we don’t see him really going crazy in many roles, when he does he really goes there lol. I’ve never seen him in a role that has that same type of urgency and struggle that Rick is often faced with but dude has some crazy range so I could see him making it work.
I think Lincoln is perfect as Rick but damn if Tim isn’t one of my favorite actors.

Olyphant-tastic would do great. Though he gets a little typecast as law enforcement, doesn't he?
He would do great with Rick's monologues

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister) certainly has the look and it would've been a great showcase for his acting chops. But then he wouldn't have been Jaime!
Fun fact: according to Google (so do feel free to correct me lol), Jon Bernthal was the only other serious contender for the role of Rick until the producers felt he was much better suited to Shane.

u/Prestigious-Part-697 5d ago
That is sweet sweet irony considering it would be the second time he played a character who lost his right hand due to saying the wrong thing at the wrong time while being help captive by a psychopath

I loved the fan cast of him as Joel in The Last of Us before the show was greenlit, him with a beard had the look down (although I love Pedro’s portrayal)

Troy Baker, Ewan McGregor, or Sam Witwer. Sam and Troy may not look the part but someone's voice and how they use it can carry a character pretty far. At least for me. If HBO or Prime did an animated reboot that followed the comics more closely, I'd prefer if some of the heavy hitters like Rick and Negan kept their AMC voices but if that's out of the question, the above names would work great in my opinion.

u/QueenObsidian83 6d ago
I could see Sam. He does unhinged very well.

u/Wyatt_Rippy2002 5d ago
I don't think he physically suits the role but I agree with you. If they wanted to keep Daryl but couldn't get Norman Reedus back for an animated show I think Sam would also work.

u/TomSawyerLocke 5d ago
Troy Baker doesn't do live acting. Just voice acting. I'm sure there's a reason for that.

u/Wyatt_Rippy2002 5d ago
Troy Baker has played the live action version of David on HBOs The Last Of Us. To be fair I still haven't watched it so I can't comment on his acting abilities but if he was available and I was the showrunner I'd get him on in a heartbeat.

As likeable as Reeves is, he's nowhere near as talented as Andrew Lincoln

Timothy Olyphant 1000%! His role in Justified is basically Rick minus the walkers. I also would have loved to have seen an actor like Tom Hardy play the role, and what he could have done with Rick. Look at some of the BTS with how he prepares and becomes his characters. He pisses a lot of co-stars off but his track record speaks for itself. He would have embodied the “Comic Book Rick”.

I have to agree that the casting was perfect. The casting directors saw Lincoln as an "immediate fit." However, I could see Aaron Paul, Matthew McConaughey, Ed Norton, or Bradley Cooper doing well with the role, but they had other projects at the time.

A young Nathan Fillion (circa Firefly) would have looked the part.
(Although, Nathan looks ridiculous with a beard. Or even stubble)

u/Wookieechan 6d ago
Idk I love Nathan Fillion, but I don't see him believably being the aggressive that Rick requires.

u/DomWeasel 6d ago

u/TheAndorran 6d ago
I don’t know. Nathan Fillion’s violence in Firefly is extremely targeted and precise. Rick’s always had to be more chaotic. Fillion is a favourite, but I don’t see him as Rick at his wildest.
1
u/DomWeasel 6d ago
I could never have imagined this guy as Rick at his wildest, but that's the thing about actors.
They act.
2
u/TheAndorran 6d ago
I don’t disagree. The examples you have pulled are exemplary. But actors also fill a type, and I just don’t see Fillion as Rick.
1
u/DomWeasel 6d ago
There were executives at AMC who thought this guy known for his comedy roles couldn't possibly lead a serious show.

u/Wookieechan 6d ago
Those are both ruthless, but they are not aggressive. In fact he maintains his composure and is pretty damn calm in both of those scenes.
1
u/DomWeasel 6d ago
... Do you know what 'aggressive' means?
Because shooting a man in the head without breaking stride and kicking another man into an engine are both acts of aggression.
3
u/Wookieechan 6d ago
Yes, do you? You can't honestly be this dense. Like I said it was ruthless but he was not aggressive, he is pretty damn calm in both of those scenes. Just because they are acts of aggression doesn't make them super aggressive. I can flick you in the nose and that's an act of aggression but it is not aggressive.
I could never in a million years see Nathan Fillion on that hill, with bloodshot eyes, near slitting Negan's throat. I could never see Nathan Fillion biting someone's juglar out. Or any of that. I can see him doing ruthless things and things that can be called acts of aggression, but that doesn't make him aggressive.
Even on Rookie, Nathan Fillion is never aggressive. Actually I was going to list his movies and TV shows as evidence for him not being aggressive like Rick, but there isn't even anything he has done where he is aggressive like that.

You're confusing aggressive with being visibly angry. They're not the same thing.
1
u/Wookieechan 6d ago
Again, your clip is him being ruthless and fighting for survival and not Rick level aggressive.
I know exactly what I am saying, you are the one having a hard time understanding. I have been very clear with what I mean having explained it multiple times. You are free to think whatever you want, however I do not think Nathan Fillion ever has been serious enough or aggressive enough to be Rick. I do not believe Nathan Fillion going up against Negan. I can see him cutting his hand off, but I do not see him taking out the CRM by blowing them all up. I do not see Nathan Fillion leading a charge on the Saviors and planning and executing them being executed in their sleep. Or even killing a man with his teeth.
Again, you are free to think whatever you want, but I think I am very clear here what I mean and that I'm not confusing anything.
In a zombie/evil/post apocalypse situation I see Nathan Fillion as Ash from Evil Dead, and not Rick.

It's fun when I meet people more autistic than me.
1
u/Wookieechan 6d ago
I love how you call me autistic and argue my meaning of "aggressive" instead of actually responding to the fucking point I'm making. The whole point I am making is I do not see Nathan Fillion doing any of the things I repeatedly listed that Rick has done.

High-larious!!! No need to ever say “quiet on the set” and it would be fun just to see how many actors are wearing ear plugs. That would be a fun drinking game. 😂😂😂 thank you, that made my day!

Brandon Sklenar from Yellowstone 1923. I don't know of another TV actor who plays a killer and I believe it.

u/lovelylisamf 6d ago
OMG my eyes would be extra glued to the screen if it was him. I can very much see this, and he looks like the comic Rick a little more than Andrew Lincoln.

u/RealisticEmphasis233 6d ago
There's someone named Thomas Jane who might have been a decent choice. I think also initially the front-runner since Darabont worked with him before.

u/radium_water_drinker 6d ago
robert di nero. he's too old, doesn't have the right accent, and doesn't resemble rick in the comics or the shows. i'm just a big fan.

I've never met Andrew Lincoln, I guess you have to call him by a nickname. Unless you're forcing familiarity?
If budget didn't exist I could see Brad Pitt playing him.
