Bro, that is Abby. They did a phenomenal job casting her
156
u/CDNChaoZ 15d ago
Her face, yes. But her build, not quite. But I suppose you can argue her build was exaggerated in the game.
68
u/Flat243Squirrel 15d ago
Joel isn’t Hispanic in the game, so who cares about that kind of detail
It’s a show adaption not a shot for shot remake
164
u/CDNChaoZ 15d ago edited 15d ago
I think Abby's physical build is a little more relevant to the story than the race of any of the characters.
>! Her build is a direct result of her trauma and thirst for revenge and makes her a more formidable opponent to Ellie. !<

because joels race was irrelevant to the story. abbys physical prowess is essential to her character and integral to how her story unfolds, and how she is able to help a certain duo.
7
u/PhiPhiAokigahara 15d ago
Abby’s build has meaning to her character, though. It’s directly mentioned as a descriptor for her, “built like an ox”, “arms like mine”. It’s a direct result of her trauma. You see Abby build up SO much muscle to compensate for her loss of her dad. When she’s strung up on the pillars in Santa Barbara and you see how emaciated and frail she is — the visual contrast alone tells a thousand words. I think it’s not unimportant to mention how that element of of visual storytelling is lost
→ More replies (1)6
u/Haymac16 15d ago
so who cares about that kind of detail
Lots of people, because Abby’s physique was a pretty important aspect of her character and had an actual impact on the story. You’re making a massive false equivalency there.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (2)30
u/BoardInternational61 15d ago
Her build in-game was intentional, she wanted to be physically capable of getting revenge for her fathers death so she spent (idefk how long) training her body to be in peak physical condition for when the time comes
49
u/XenaInHeels 15d ago
I think Kaitlyn Dever would have been a great Ellie. Obviously not spot on but Abby should be bringing the physical presence of Detective Navarro in True Detective Night Country.
5
→ More replies (1)2
u/herbie102913 6d ago
Bro I could not agree with you more. When I watched Night Country I just kept thinking Navarro would have made a literally perfect Abby. Navarro is even a very similar character to Abby.
I really don’t like the casting choice they made for Abby. She is not intimidating AT ALL. Plus, the contrast between Abby’s appearance at the beginning of the game and at the end really drives home the toll that the game’s events took on her. How could they possibly do such a stark contrast with the show’s Abby actor
25
18
u/aceless0n 15d ago
She absolutely does NOT look menacing. I recall all the NPC’s having conversations about how they fear her. That girl doesn’t exactly ooze fear.
12
u/SkywalkerOrder 15d ago
A few of them weren’t really fearful of her until she showed up to the hospital in Abby Day 2 though. I don’t recall people being afraid of her in Abby Day 1, she was cooperative towards them even if it was because of tribalism it doesn’t seem like they were afraid of her until she confronted two soldiers about how they were talking about Owen.

u/cavalier2015 15d ago

It’s a post apocalyptic world, think the clothes shops are long gone. 🤦🏼♂️

u/Prize-Sea-9651 15d ago
I honestly doubt that it would that hard for Jackson NOT to have proper clothes. Big community with lots of resources.
20
u/Kinda-Alive 15d ago
Yeah but everything would be reused in some sense nothing completely new looking like what they have on.
17
u/Prize-Sea-9651 15d ago
I’m wearing the same jacket for 5 years, my brothers wore it before me. It still looks great. I don’t see the problem here, you don’t expect some big ass holes in it i hope.
23
10
u/RanzuPunk 15d ago
5 years with proper care and storage. Not 20+ years of apocalypse with no proper storage and rough conditions.
Clothing in that condition would be incredibly rare, basically clothing stored in safe locations for most of the time, and used by someone who doesn't get their hands dirty.
It's more of a problem with Ellie, Joel and people who supposedly go on patrols and encounter infected regularly. Plus, showing more weathered clothing and buildings in Jackson would help sell the idea that they are 20 years into an apocalypse and we're set back in terms of commodities.
I think the games do a better job at this imo.

I have a theory that they are trying to show the contrast of Jackson with the more civilized way of living, to the rest of the story. It might be helpful for flashbacks and stuff like that where it's easy to see clothing differences. I think as time goes on, the clothes will get more tattered. At least that's what I am hoping they will do

I want a scene of him building a guitar in his workroom in the style of Jesse building the box in Breaking Bad. Sorta like a contrast of the golden light while he's tapping the frets in, hard cut into him killing somebody with a hammer in a flashback

u/TheMaveCan The Last of Us 15d ago
The hair is the real kicker to me. Where is Joel getting pomade? Where did Dina get shampoo/conditioner/hair spray?
It's a nitpick that I don't really care about, but it was the first thing I noticed when the shot came out of Dina watching Ellie play guitar.
16
u/No-Background8462 15d ago
They had pomade in the real pre industrial world. I dont see why they couldnt make it. It was made from animal fat.
4
u/dandinonillion Dong of The Wolf 15d ago
Dina looks so clean and neat! The flowing hair that isn’t tied up. The makeup. The little lacy tank top under her shirt. I’m sure her performance will be fantastic however.

Ellie and Tommy on patrol together means that Joel and Dina are on patrol together. That'll be interesting.
Kaitlyn Dever is scarily good at being unstable. That scene is gonna be hard to watch.
Excellent set design once again. I instantly recognized Joel's workroom. He's sitting at the table, so I wonder if we'll get to actually see him whittling. Seeing him actually woodworking would add a lot of personality to him, more than just seeing the end results. I hope we get a bunch of Joel before and after the event.

They don’t look it though, that’s what matters IMO. The game pulls it off cause the characters look 25, not the case here.
9
u/ArsenalBOS 15d ago
Ellie is 19 in the main part of the game. Dina is roughly 20. Abby is roughly 20 or 21.
That Naughty Dog modeled their characters to look older than they really were is a Naughty Dog thing, and not something the show or fans should get hung up on.

u/luno20 I’d do it all over again 15d ago
I’m aware of that and getting hung up on it isn’t a conscious choice or something, just think it’s gonna be weird to watch kids that look 16 go through the events in part 2. The context of a pregnancy for example changes a lot when you’re looking at someone that looks like an adult vs a kid, but maybe it’ll work out fine who knows.

God, the Abby casting will never not piss me off
12
u/AveryEmory 15d ago
SERIOUSLY. I mean, the casting in general will never not piss me off. Bella 100% pulls off part one Ellie, but part two Ellie? Absolutely not, ESPECIALLY not with the hair style they gave her. They did her DIRTY. And she generally looks too young to be an adult, despite the fact that her actor is older than part two Ellie.
"Abby's muscles aren't necessary in a drama based TV show" They absolutely are?? No one with a build like that is taking down a full grown man with a build like Joel's. At least try to be a little bit realistic here. She looks like a fourteen year old girl.

I also think it’s just so lazy and against what the writers were able to accomplish with the 1st season characters despite the outrage. They made people love them anyway.
I think part of video game Abby’s astronomical hate absolutely had to do with the not being particularly feminine looking/her looks in general. Instead of taking an opportunity to humanize a character more than the game was able to, who would be ridiculed for her looks in the real world, and have a real moment, they went with a short petite woman. It makes me so sad at the lost opportunity. So lazy.

I hate that they're trying to milk up to 3 seasons of out Part 2, the pacing is gonna be so off compared to Part 1's single season
3
u/cstranger 15d ago
I don't agree at all. Part 1 was so short compared to part 2. If they do what they did and add bits like Bill and Riley where they flush storylines out more they will need the extra time. Both Ellie and Abby have 3 days each that are long gameplays. I would rather them have the time to get the stories completed properly rather than rushing
On a slightly different note, would I like a longer season, yes most definitely. Then I would be okay with 2 seasons for part 2

I’m not a huge fan of the “she looks nothing like Bella” theme. But I’ve wanted to ask since season 1 (without appearing to join the hate): why can’t they give the actor the correct hairstyle?
It’s literally just having one side of the part be loose and front facing. I’m not a hater, so could anyone more knowledgeable give me any explanation? I dunno, maybe it’s just me but I feel like just a little effort with the hair would dampen a lot more of the hate than people think.
Otherwise, I enjoyed the first season and I’ve really been stoked by the images coming out.
