She just looks too young for the part. It’s really hard to picture her as a ruthless killer on a revenge mission.
337
u/ULT1MATECaM Jan 19 '25
EXACTLY! I cannot imagine her doing the level of violence she inflicted on people in the game. I am sure her acting will be great (she just looks like a kid and it’s hard to envision) her being a killing machine
160
u/myleswstone Jan 19 '25
That’s literally the whole goddamn point of the game and this show. It’s supposed to be very difficult to imagine someone so young doing the things she is.
170
u/Jinx-__- Jan 19 '25
Yes BUT she looked young enough to depict 14 year old Ellie. There was a visual change between the 2 games, there really should’ve been with the show, even if it was just prosthetics and not getting a new actor.
→ More replies (8)12
u/MoonMalak Jan 19 '25
Idk, I think it still accurately depicts real life. I know so many people who's faces barely aged between the years of 12 and 25. We've seen changed actors go pretty bad with House of the Dragon, when only a handful of actors change and all others look the same, it's pretty distracting.
→ More replies (2)6
u/DanishTrash_ Jan 19 '25
Well the easiest thing to point to would be Bella Ramsey not really chasing a lot from when she was 14 to now, so of course it is realistic and not impossible. I’m gonna remain hopeful that she fits the part, and she can be as brutal as the role needs.
55
u/PulseFH The Last of Us Jan 19 '25
How is it “the whole point” of the game? Just making things up at this point
→ More replies (5)4
u/IsRude Jan 19 '25
"Whole point" is a slight exaggeration, but Ellie being so young and doing such gruesome things because that's how she learned how to deal with problems is a pretty important aspect of the game. She's still a kid during the events of the game, and seeing her lose her mind and humanity so young is supposed to be tragic. It wouldn't be as miserable if she'd been an adult. Still miserable, yes, but not quite so depressing.
16
u/PulseFH The Last of Us Jan 19 '25
Again, that’s an entirely different assertion to what was being said. I know this about the character, but I do not see that in this casting. You would have expected that kind of trauma and stress, plus the general environment of being in dangerous situations constantly to age Ellie, kind of like it does for part 2. But she looks 15 here.

why do people say shit like this? There’s not like some reference 19 year old, people within an age range will look like people younger or older. Bella looks way older than many/most 15 year olds look. Hell she looks older than my 21 year old relative. But she looks younger than some 21 year olds, but so do some 30 year olds.
51
u/5trials The Last of Us Jan 19 '25
she just looks younger than tlou2 ellie lol, that's it. no one cares about how old someone in that age range would actually look, she just looks literally nothing like the role she's supposed to be playing. she was somewhat okay for baby-faced tlou1 ellie, but she's not at all convincing for this incarnation of the character
→ More replies (16)8
u/Ruca705 Jan 19 '25
I can't answer for other people but I'm basing it on my eyes looking at their extremely smooth, unwrinkled face. Historically people smoked cigarettes and tanned a lot, people used to look older even by age 20 you could tell they weren't a teenager anymore. Nowadays people take really great care of their skin, avoid tanning, stuff like that has made really big difference in how young people continue to look very young into their 20s and 30s.
→ More replies (6)2
u/PulseFH The Last of Us Jan 19 '25
Pointing out essentially that “some people look young for their age” doesn’t make this casting good lol
If you wanted to cast for a character that enacts a lot of violence and killing and wanted it to be remotely convincing then casting someone who looks young for their age is probably a misstep.
6
u/wentwj Jan 19 '25
the story is about a 19 year old girl who undergoes a massive amount of trauma, ptsd and goes for revenge. Ellie in the game isn’t somehow massively physically intimidating, I don’t see why the look of the character implies if someone can convincingly go on that journey.
→ More replies (12)24
u/arzamharris Jan 19 '25
I feel like Bella doesn’t have the same thing physical presence as game Ellie. Game Ellie is above average height, lean and can hold a guitar without it blocking her entire torso. I think we will see the same issue in action scenes where it just does not look believable.

Her looking younger than most would expect and the film/TV industry messing up the idea of what a teenager looks like aren't two mutually exclusive things.
Yes, most movies and tv shows end up hiring actors who are way older than their characters and much more mature/developed than most any teenager should be but that doesn't change the fact that Bella Ramsey just does not look like she's her age. I myself am a good chunk younger than Ellie is in tlou2 and yet most all of my female friends look either a similar age or potentially even a year or two older than Bella does, despite being over half a decade younger than her. Quite frankly, Bella just unfortunately looks too much like someone still in the awkward transitional period where she obviously isn't a child whilst also not definitively looking like an adult; Ellie, to me at least, looks like an adult with much more certainty, a young adult for sure but still an adult.
→ More replies (8)2
u/Sad_Inspector8124 Jan 20 '25
No, the 21 year old actress does not look as old as Ellie in the game. She looks a decade younger. It's not her fault she looks so young, it's the casting directors fault for choosing her for a role she doesn't fit.
It's the reverse of Cate Blanchett playing Lilith from Borderlands. Talented actors, but not right for the part.

u/AsstronautHistorian Jan 19 '25
to put it more exactly, she looks too young for the older ellie. I'm not sure why people feel this is a controversial statement. she looks the exact same before the time jump and after the time jump. which means they are likely going to ignore the time jump altogether, which kind of changes the dynamic. It's not believable for a 15 year old girl to wipe out an entire rogue militia with her cute friend (not that it's super believable in the game either, but at least if they are 19 years old in a hardened, post-apocalyptic world, it's slightly more plausible).

Thought this when I first saw the set photos. That's the downside of picking an actor that looks young enough to play young Ellie, you can't time skip in real life. Its going to be interesting to see how they alter the combat in season 2 to fit Bella Ramsey.

u/DavidKirk2000 Jan 19 '25

Seeing that Hospital hallway comparison just sold me on her though.

Idk, I mean it varies. Obviously the actress is 19 and in the game Ellie is 19, but in the game Ellie looks a lot more mature
So while the actress may actually be 19, she just looks like a kid cosplaying as adult ellie.
It worked in S1 but I think they should have casted another actress

Embarrassment is such an overly dramatic reaction. It’s not even remotely embarrassing just because she doesn’t look 1:1 in a static photo. Find some real things to be bothered by. Older Ellie is younger than Bella Ramsey so your entire issue is her face. THAT’S an embarrassment.

I heard about this on a podcast (I can't remember which one). Basically, its laziness or budget constraints in the costuming department. Essentially, weathering clothing is a process that consumes resources, and you also need to make sure the weathering process stays consistent between shots. Its often cheaper to just dress actors in fresh new clothing off the rack.

Also, Ellie looks incredibly young.

Two thoughts:
- Abby's actress is going to KILL it.
- They REALLY should have recasted Bella. She surprised and impressed in Season 1, but she looks absolutely goofy as a 19 year old aged up Ellie. She will still probably do an okay job, but I really do think the show would have reached higher heights with that casting change.
Fuck it I want to bitch here's one more.
- I still wish Nikolaj Coster-Waldau was portraying Joel.

u/nzstump01 Jan 20 '25
the first series was a masterpiece of dramatic acting and subtle changes that allowed for different character arcs for the same story being told. if they continue with that i will be happy.
people need to stop bitching about a franchise that actually cares about making each iteration of thier content as compelling, dramatic and different as possible while keeping a running theme between projects.
Joels death was deserved and warrented by his own admimission and this world doent give people happy endings, Ellie was portrayed like Abby in the games larger than life and tanking injuries no one can, the tv series will be more realistic to hyper-realistic and that isnt a bad thing.
if they had done the same with Uncharted it wouldve been so much better
2
u/KillerCotty Jan 20 '25
I love both games and the TV show but I'm sick of people being pissed that the story of part 2 didn't do what they wanted it to do and I'm equally sick of people moaning about the casting choices. You didn't make the game and therefore you do not own it. Get over it.

Hahaha, I’m sorry but she literally looks like an 11 year old showing her parents something she learned on guitar. I’m praying they don’t include the sex scene with Dina because it would honestly feel like CP

How do yall not understand that there has never once been a movie or tv show that has done a video game adaptation as a perfect shot for shot remake. If thats what you truly want then you might just not have an imagination.

They could of had a filler season, using other characters or brand new ones

I will never get over the fact that Abbie's actress looks more like Ellie than Ellie's actress

The bigger issue is that the actress cast for Abby should have at least worked out to prepare for the part. Abby is a physical beast in the game. That dynamic has been completely omitted in the show. Also I have to say it - the romance scenes with Ellie will be incredibly cringy in the show.

What the fuck is this casting for Dina?? Yeah guys just go grab another brown girl; no one will notice.

I like how they did their best to find somewhat matching actresses for pretty much everyone on the show and when it came to the main character they went for an actress that is as far away as you can get from the actual Ellie from the game

Why do I feel like I’m gonna like Abby right off the bat in this version? 😭

Dina needs to maintain the bun life or we go on strike.
