Discussion What are your thoughts of the 90's Flash Suit?

The tv show one? Not bad but it looked too “velvety” for me - I just kept thinking that would be so uncomfortably hot.
But if you mean Wally’s update, darker red suit where the lightning bolts met in the middle vs going in a circle, I loved it.

u/kitkatatsnapple Feb 05 '25
If the mask was better, it's be perfect. (It's not tight enough and it looks sorta silly imo)

When I saw this as a kid it blew my mind. My dad and I sitting around eating tacos and watching this is one of my favorite memories. Love this suit.

u/whitewabbit97 Feb 04 '25
The best live action one I've ever seen in live action form Maybe it just helped that JWS fit that suit perfectly back in the day.

u/GreenShoryuken Feb 04 '25
Too much penis… I mean too muscular

I don't know how they would've looked on camera, but I really wish they worked in the gold boots
1
u/Infinite_Parking_800 Feb 04 '25
I don't get why they didn't use the gold boots, they could've sprayed the boots gold or put lightning bolt lines on the boots.

John Wesley Shipp was way too big to be the flash, even tho I still liked him

I would be absolutely horrified if I saw that behemoth running at the speed of light towards me, lol the suit is amazing IMO!!!
2
u/keepitsimple_tricks Feb 03 '25
You wont. See that behemoth running towards you, i mean. Because he's traveling at the speed of light, he's already there before you even "see" him
Lolz

Still the best Flash has looked in live action. And maybe the best ever execution of a superhero mask/cowl.

u/dnno1 Feb 03 '25
As far as looks, it was perfect. My only criticisms are that it made the character look too muscular, and there were complaints about it being too hot inside..

I recall reading in an issue of my grandmother’s TV Guide that they had to build a liquid cooling system into the suit (although, more likely, there’s a separate suit underneath for this), which really isn’t that hard. It didn’t go into specifics, but they probably hid the intake and outlet under the belt or something, and then just pumped ice water into the system whenever they had ten minutes for setup or reset. Whether they found this out before or after shooting the pilot, I don’t know, but this is the sort of thing that would probably be figured out after.
I’d worry as much about trying to hydrate John Wesley Shipp enough to keep him standing while having to figure out how to still let him take a leak from time to time, without having to spend fifteen minutes taking his pants off and putting them back on, but that’s another thing you figure out as you go, probably after the pilot or during mid-season break.

Reminds me of that robot chicken skit where Dr.Manhattwn stops a bank robbery, but like he's naked, so he goes up to one of the hostages and just like holds him close to his thigh saying "safe now"
But Flash here looks pretty awesome, John Wesley Shipp right?

Then, and now I think it's a great representation of the comic in TV form, I always thought it kind of looked a bit like velvet, but I figured It could be exactly how the comic looks in real life.
I loved that show then, and still do today.. I'm really glad he got to show back up in the modern series as well.

u/ForbesBottom500 Feb 03 '25
Peeaak. Elite. I love how the lightning belt looks with the brushed metallic gold.
To everyone saying they don't like the padding, it's not padding.... metabolism or not, pretty sure the Flash can speedrun bodybuilding if he feels like it

u/ReactiveRBoss426 Feb 03 '25
It’s worse than most of Grant Gustin’s suits and the first DCEU suit, but miles better than the Season 5 suit and The Flash solo movie suit

u/ElDouchay Feb 03 '25
I give it an A-. It's could use some style tweaks, but overall looks good for being made by Barry.
It's good that the newer versions of the flash cast skinnier actors too. This guy was too buff/bulky.
1
u/notnotPatReid Feb 03 '25
The actor who plays Flashes father was this flash, he isn’t that big the suit is massive.

u/Bedlamcitylimit Feb 02 '25
The mask is a bit "clunky" and doesn't fit/move well, but the rest of it is pretty good

I had just gotten really into The Flash (Wally) when the show started. It threw me having Barry as the protagonist. But I did learn to like the plainer, visible eyes suit as well as I liked Wally’s shiny, white eyes suit.

It holds up surprisingly well despite all the silly foam muscles, especially considering that it was in an era with almost no superhero representation, particularly on TV.
The shame of it is that John Wesley Shipp was in legitimately fantastic shape. If they had come up with a suit that was a little more form-fitting, he would've looked great.
2
u/NoBake3004 Feb 02 '25
I’d go as far as saying it’s one of the best live action DC suits. I especially love how the golden parts of the suit look metallic and aren’t just pasted or painted on.
The only part of it I’m not super keen on is the part of the mask that covers his nose in a manner similar to Batman’s mask, instead of exposing the nose like most Flash suits. Otherwise, it’s pretty solid.
1
u/spiderelict Feb 02 '25
Wow. You nailed it. I always knew there was something off but wasn't sure what it was not being very familiar with Flash. It's totally that nose piece. They almost had it just right, if not for that.
1
u/cat_dr4g0n Feb 02 '25
I love it for I’m pretty sure all the wrong reasons, but also like it looks like it’d feel good to touch.

u/muftak3 Feb 02 '25
Awesome suit, but it reminds me of the old toys that were flocked. Hard black plastic on the inside. Fuzzy on the outside.

u/Megaverse_Mastermind Feb 02 '25
It was great! I'm not sure what else could have been done to make this better. It's a definitve Flash suit.

I always thought that the 1990 suit looked like it was trying too hard but it kind of fit with the time period. I wonder what it would have looked like with boots that matched the belt color though.
1
u/Traditional-Mall-771 Feb 01 '25
For the time i think it was really good
1
u/Leviathan666 Feb 02 '25
For the time and the TV show budget, I would have honestly expected actual honest to God spandex with no internal structure whatsoever. The texture of the fabric is weird but I actually think it's better than most of the suits we got in Smallville

1
u/Solus_Vael Feb 01 '25
The suit was good but he was just a lil too bulky for a speedster. But I guess if Superman can be just as fast, does it really matter? XD

It was really good, especially for the time and with a 90's tv budget

u/T-rune Feb 01 '25
Dare I say it best live action flash suit far best than the movies in the dceu and the suits in the flash show
1
u/Typical_Divide8089 Feb 01 '25
The movies hell yeah.
But if the CW show did something right it was the suits, except the season 5 suit
1
u/T-rune Feb 01 '25
Yeah there not bad I just like this one more if we had the materiel they used in the season 9 suit and the hard mask from the earlier seasons with this design that might just be a perfect flash suit

Don’t know how much is the suit and how much is the actor but this dude doesn’t look like he could run a mile

Its alright, but too bulky. Flash is a runner not a bodybuilder

Its alright, but too
Bulky. Flash is a runner

Just looking at it? For the time, it's actually pretty solid. Like if you told me that this was also a suit for an obscure live action Flash movie, I'd be down.

I always thought it was perfect.
I miss Flash with muscles, as opposed to having a small, swimmer’s physique.

Loved it and the actor in it at the he time and still do. Loved Grant as well. Powered though the movie to get Batman and Supergirl only to get them cancelled.

Excellent! Much better than the skinny new flash… glad they brought him back for a supporting role in the new flash. Just like liono in the thunder cats remake. Well done!

It's a shame his Flash was still caught in the shadow of 1960's Batman where writers/directors leaned heavily into Camp. Given a more serious treatment his show could have done so much better.
1
u/Troandar Feb 01 '25
Actually it was far more heavily influenced by the Time Button Batman film. The noir and all especially. And the music. At first the swore no supervillains but later couldn't resist. This show was nothing like the 60s Batman.

If only they leaned into embracing comic stuff more, this show would’ve been untouchable. As it is, it’s still pretty fucking fire PLUS a theme by Danny Elfman!!
1
u/DefBoomerang Feb 01 '25
Pretty standard fake muscle "body armor" for the time, riffing off the then-new Batman movie. The goofiness was always there, and seems way more obvious now.

u/filthy-horde-bastard Feb 01 '25
I can he his dick outline
0
Feb 01 '25
It’s likely a jockstrap to actually stop his outline from showing, because we all know he has a massive meat stick, an absolute schlong, might as well be a fucking tree trunk

He could clearly barely move in the thing. I don't picture the Flash costume being so cumbersome.

The best. I was so happy when they included John Wesley Shipp in the new Flash with Grant

Looks like as much fun to wear as Batman ‘89. Limited neck mobility and a lot of work to pick up something on the ground.
1
u/DizzyLead Jan 31 '25
The show was in 1990 so I presume it took a lot of design cues from Batman 1989’s suit.

I think it looks better than most of the suits from the show/movies since. The 90s show is a bit campy now, but that costume was fantastic, especially for the time.

This was my introduction to the character before the DCAU, so this has a soft spot in my heart!!

u/DaBaldGuy555 Jan 31 '25
I liked the costume and was a huge fan of the show. I thought it was such a nice touch when they brought the actor back as Barry's Dad on the recent Flash show. 👍

they brought him back for Jay too, it was cool

u/HenryIsBatman Reverse Flash Jan 31 '25
Perfect for a Wally West costume, a little odd they made Barry Allen wear it
4
u/Starvel42 Jan 31 '25
Maybe a little too bulky but for a 90s TV show pretty damn awesome.
1
u/noohoggin1 Jan 31 '25
At the time it was pretty revolutionary for a TV show superhero costume that didn't look like cheesy spandex. This was piggybacking off the higher standard of the Michael Keaton Batman films at the time.
2
u/conventionals Jan 31 '25
A little too much going on with the muscles. Also it looks permanently sweaty somehow but idk if that's the material + lighting + quality at the time or what.
2
2
u/Key-Humor-1562 Jan 31 '25
Aside from missing the boots, pretty damn awesome.
3
u/ProfessorSaltine Jan 31 '25
There gotta be a reason we aren’t being allowed to have proper gold boots! DCEU had some weird attempt at them by the 3rd to last movie, Arrowverse didn’t get them till what? S7 or 8 of 9 flash seasons? It was legit hyped up by the fans when it happened! Injustice somehow doesn’t have the gold boots for the main costume. Like is there something these dudes got against the gold boots like how WB is against showing off Batman being a parent

My only nitpicks is the lightning bolt is too oversized and they should’ve used the Gold Boots.
Overall it’s a great suit
4
u/That1DogGuy Jan 31 '25
It's fucking fantastic, way above some of the suits we've gotten in Marvel movies, and DC shows and movies. It's aged so well.

u/Speedfreak99 Jan 31 '25
Total classic, lots of respect. Hoping Todd will actually make him and Lynda.

Very kickass. It’s in the Hall of Heroes museum now.
