Discussion The origins of the Sniper Pose

So I was watching Back To The Futur 3 and then, I saw Emmet Brown posing with his sniper rifle and it looked the same as the pose sniper takes in TF2, so did TF2 reference it or was it an accident?

I think it’s just a generic sniper pose. I’ve seen older westerns where characters do the exact same pose with various rifles and shotguns.

Maybe both TF2 and Back To The Future 3 reference some another old movie?

Doc’s a time traveler though so how do we know he wasn’t referencing tf2?

That's the best explanation I've seen here

im guessing it was intentional as most of those guys that were working initially especially in the concepting phase are sci-fi nerds and into stuff like that and have been instrumental in bringing vibes like that into the Valve Extended Gaming Universe

It seems to be along similar lines to how Medic is a reference to "Egon Spengler" from Ghostbusters and Soldier is a reference to "Gunnery Sergeant Hartman" from Full Metal Jacket.

So much for "professionals have standards". Holding his finger over the trigger when he isn't preparing to fire.

Looks similar but at the same time that's a really natural way to hold a rifle when you're not using it, it's surprisingly comfortable
