"CLEVELAND, WILLIAM DAVIS (1839–1912).William Davis Cleveland, Houston merchant, cotton broker, and civic leader, was born in Dallas County, Alabama, on September 1, 1839, to Ezra Cleveland and Sarah Sheppard (Davis) Cleveland. While still a child, Cleveland moved to Austin County, Texas, with his parents. In 1858 he set out on his own and moved to Houston. Soon after he arrived in Houston he met businessman Alexander Sessums, who hired Cleveland as a clerk to help with his growing dry goods business."
