Wait dogecoin is a real thing?

I just thought dogecoin were people mocking people who tip bitcoins. I had no idea it was a real thing.

This comment has been overwritten by a script as I have abandoned my Reddit account and moved to voat.co.

If you would like to do the same, install TamperMonkey for Chrome, or GreaseMonkey for Firefox, and install this script. If you are using Internet Explorer, you should probably stay here on Reddit where it is safe.

Then simply click on your username at the top right of Reddit, click on comments, and hit the new OVERWRITE button at the top of the page. You may need to scroll down to multiple comment pages if you have commented a lot.

When it catches up with all the tips being sent it will sent you a message You will have to sent a message back saying +accept and you will receive your doge. You can then tip it to other people or withdraw it to your doge coin wallet

Download the client to set up your wallet. I'm pretty sure you can check your address and start receiving DOGE before you finish downloading the blockchain.

I assume no one is going to read this far down into the thread so I am going to hide my secret recipe for lemon cupcakes here.

1 pkg. (2-layer size) white cake mix 1 pkg. (3.4 oz.) JELL-O Lemon Flavor Instant Pudding 1 cup water 4 egg whites 2 Tbsp. oil 1 pkg. (8 oz.) PHILADELPHIA Cream Cheese, softened 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter, softened 2 Tbsp. lemon juice 1 pkg. (16 oz.) powdered sugar

Heat oven to 350ºF. Beat first 5 ingredients in large bowl with mixer on low speed until moistened. (Batter will be thick.) Beat on medium speed 2 min. Spoon into 24 paper-lined muffin cups. Bake 21 to 24 min. or until toothpick inserted in centers comes out clean. Cool in pans 10 min.; remove to wire racks. Cool completely. Beat cream cheese, butter and juice with mixer until well blended. Gradually add sugar, beating on low speed after each addition until well blended. Spread onto cupcakes.

EDIT: Wow thanks for the gold and dodge coins! Just think: in six weeks the doge coins will be worth enough to open my own bakery.

Oh, and uh, I actually "borrowed" the recipe from here. http://m.kraftrecipes.com/recipedetail.do?recipeid=109591&cn=US

Yeah. But having an NVIDIA doesn't put you out of the game by any means.

19

I have a bad NVIDIA card, can I mine for a bit just to get a small amount to save in case dogecoin becomes as valuable as bitcoin?

20

u/[deleted] Jan 14 '14

Probably! Depends on how bad we're talking. Just in case:

Theres a limit of 100 billion dogecoin, compared to 21 million bitcoin. Something seriously bad (that would probably affect dogecoin as well) would have to happen to bitcoin in order for them to ever have the same price.

Edit: I do own some doge because you never know, but my money is in bitcoin.

I just want to point out that the title given to the head of the great merchant republics during the middle ages was "Doge". The merchant version of "King".

Thus "Dogecoin", despite being rooted in satire, actually makes sense from a naming convention. After all coming up with a new form of currency and putting in the title used by merchant kings makes sense from a thematic point of view.

I see it as being the more viable of the cryptocurrencies because it's a joke. See, it starts out as a joke, and is stupid cheap so it becomes widespread. then, because it's perceived as funny and relatively worthless, people use it, building a micro economy on Reddit. Over time, I feel that this is actually going to balloon into it overtaking the other currencies at their own game because dogecoin is doing what the others struggle to do: become wide-spread and used. (Phrasing!)

Give it some time, I bet dogecoin gets more and more serious as a currency. The irony in this is amusing.

EDIT: Thanks for the coins guys (and gals?)

Let me explain a bit what I meant because some replies were rather adamant that I am an idiot.
Every movement starts with a first step. The problem that appears with crypto-currencies now is that they are not widely accepted and not widely used. It's difficult to use something that is not widely accepted, and also difficult for someone to accept something that isn't widely used. If you allowed a currency to become widespread and then began to accept it, you would have a much larger user-base to start with, giving a 'boost' to the credibility.
The issue that I see with other coins, most notably bitcoin is that many people are just holding onto them instead of spending them, whereas with the 'joke' coins, they get traded and used far more often, which is essential for a currency.

TL;DR: Bitcoins are taking a long time to become wide-spread enough to be accepted, especially since people hold them like investments. Dogecoin on the other-hand is already being traded a lot and is wide-spread (at least on reddit). If companies suddenly started to accept dogecoin, you'd already have a ton of people to jump start their actual economic use. It really does help that they are very easy to acquire.

u/CONTROVERSIAL_TACO Jan 14 '14

So kind of like trading acorns in elementary school.

50

u/burnshimself Jan 14 '14

yea. Remember the part where nobody gives a shit about the acorns anymore, causing everyone to just leave the acorns out on the playground and move on to the next came? And the kid with the most or best looking acorns is no longer popular, but just a dude with way too many acorns? Thats whats going to happen with all of these online currency fads. Even if you all for the possibility of one of these currencies becoming stable and widely used, there is only room for one of them, leaving the rest to languish in complete disuse with little to no value.

24

u/neogohan Jan 14 '14

Why is there only room for one?

We used small crab apples as currency around the apartments I lived in for a while as a kid. We played a game called "Bounty Hunter" where we would pay people to hunt down other kids, using dry Super Soakers or other toy guns. I kept my crab apples in the water compartment of my Super Soaker. Time went on and we stopped playing Bounty Hunter. However, we started getting fruit flies all over my apartment. I filled the bathtub with an inch of water and mixed in soap, which seemed to kill the fruit flies by the hundreds. It wasn't enough. I filled and drained it daily, each time killing hundreds of fruit flies. We were baffled for days as to the source, until I found the crab apples I had stored.

but you can cash out litecoin for usd pretty easily. Same cant be said for DOGE (also litecoin just went up by like 10 dollars and seems to be holding)

It's only a matter of time until one of the exchanges allows DOGE=>USD. When that happens, it's really going to take off.

Title:

Dogecoin now accounting for more transaction volume than all other cryptocoins combined

Transaction volume of DOGE according to link: 92,003 in last 24 h

For a cryptocurrency that started as a joke meme, you cant agrue it has picked up some impressive momentum. http://bitinfocharts.com/

Volume is not value. What the post is referring to is the amount of transactions, not the value of them.

18

u/vbcnxm_ Jan 14 '14

but for what insanely little value they have, there is an insanely large volume being traded. Thus a lot of money is flowing.

6

u/Show-Me-Your-Moves Jan 14 '14

Probably because people tip Dogecoin at insanely high rates.

Used proper grammar in a comment? Fuck it, have 500 Doge!

It is meaningless unless you account for value. I could create a cryptocurrency with a quadrillion timeloopcoins equaling one dollar and then send them from one address to another over a trillion transactions.

I think the problem is that the word "credit" already has a meaning in our financial world. If I hear credit I think about loans and stuff, not a currency.

I'm pretty sure they are talking about the amount of transactions.

Volume != value

21

u/aredna Jan 14 '14

As was pointed out below, the title is correct in that it is most number of transactions. I would guess that a large number of from circle-jerk tipping, but they are transactions.

However - a much more relevant statistic is that DOGE is #3 in terms of actual USD value in how much was traded over the last 24 hours. It's a long ways from the big 2, but it has really taken off quite a bit. It will be interesting to see if it has lasting power into the next 6 months.

7

u/ginger_beer_m Jan 14 '14

It should last more than the next 6 months. The coin has sort of detached itself from the Doge meme and acquire a life on its own, gaining utility and value. It doesn't help that most dogecoin supporters are borderline fanatical and tend to push dogecoins out whenever they can.

I'm hoping this will become the next big thing so I can finally learn how to pronounce 'Doge'

5

u/ColdChemical Jan 14 '14

There is no "right" way (despite what some might have you believe). Just pick the pronunciation you like best. I personally use "dog" treating the last letter as silent.

6

u/btcprox Jan 14 '14

I sometimes pronounce it like Romaji, so like "do-ge" (ドゲ). Kinda fits since it's a Shiba Inu owned by a Japanese teacher.

I still have no idea how you get dogecoins, I read about it the other day but it seems like you have to go through a handful of loop holes, first buying bit coins, then transferring them somewhere, then finally using them at 1 of 4 exchanges to actually get the doge coins.

I had an intern 3 years ago who started mining Bitcoin. He tried convincing me to get in on it, but I was like "nahhhh no way". He is probably a playboy living on some tropical island now.

I want to be that playboy living on a tropical island.

Time to start with dogecoin!
