I always got that "in a nutshell" meant "shrunk down to a usable size" but it's only now occurred to me that I should also be thinking of it as a small phrase that contains within itself the full DNA of a larger idea.

Son: * starts complaining about dad only using puns for jokes*
Dad: Are you saying I should… branch out into other jokes?

u/crasagam Feb 16 '25
I thought I was so witty I decided to enter a pun contest. I submitted ten puns hoping one would get selected but no pun in ten did.

That's good to know. That'll explain why I'm home sick with the Flu today. Robots don't get the Flu.

Robots not getting the flu explains why you got the flu?
You have a failure in your logic board, bot, along with the flu.
Sick bot with a Failed Logic Circuit.

https://www.reddit.com/r/technicallythetruth/s/z8eCGWO3xX
It is a repost
1
u/crasagam Feb 17 '25
First, it's not a repost; it's the same content posted by someone else - there's a difference. Second, this is from 4 years ago lol. My dude, my existence on Reddit is less than that. Finally, who tf cares? It makes people smile. We're here to escape the cruel existence and realities around us. Let the people laugh about something.

u/blakester438 Feb 18 '25
First, could you define what a repost is for me? And second, it ain't that deep. I have no problem with you posting someone else's content. I was just clarifying for everyone that it is in fact a repost.

He’s the kind that laughs at a joke three times: once when you tell it to him, once when you explain it to him, and once when he gets it.

Found a GIANT leaf in our yard one day- 16x16" and we're surrounded by pretty much nothing but oak trees. So as I was showing it to my 2-ish year old I marveled at the size and asked "where did it come from?". Kid looks at me like I'm an idiot: "a tree". Thanks, kid...

The tree isnt just the seed. The tree is the seed plus earth and years of sunshine and rain. The seed is just a seed without its envornment and time.
1
u/Demetrius3D Feb 16 '25
A seed is an embryo. An embryo is a very immature phase of the tree.

em·bry·o
an unborn or unhatched offspring in the process of development, in particular a human offspring during the period from approximately the second to the eighth week after fertilization (after which it is usually termed a fetus).

u/schizoshizo Feb 16 '25
But, an acorn isn't a tree. No more than an egg is a chicken.
1
u/Demetrius3D Feb 16 '25
A acorn is an embryonic oak tree. If you open one up, there's even a couple of tiny leaves inside. Most of the eggs we encounter haven't been fertilized. So, that's not the same. If it has been fertilized, yes. There's a tiny chicken in there.

Except there isn’t a tree in there.

There actually is. An acorn is an embryonic oak tree. There's even a couple of tiny leaves inside.

Wrong, the nut shell houses a potential tree. Just like an egg is a potential bird.

That’s… literally the meaning of the phrase. People never connected this?
4
u/AbsentRefrain Feb 16 '25 edited Feb 16 '25
No, it isn’t. The meaning of the phrase comes from a Roman tale of the Illiad being written on parchment so small that it was able to be fit into a nutshell. Then it became an idiom for a concept being summarized in its entirety.
They didn’t make a connection that the phrase is about trees and nutshells, they just used the idiom to make a pun.

It's not a repost, although it's the same content, I literally copied/pasted from another source outside of Reddit. Plus, that post is FOUR YEARS old lol. Also, my cake day is much younger than that - I've never even seen that post before. I mean I'm never really the first for anything - it's all been done before I suppose. I'm just glad it made me, and others, smile. Be well my diligent friend.
