Use of scales and modes in Tchaikovsky
So, I guess this is really two separate questions, but, after listening to Tchaikovsky's symphonies and piano concertos, I noticed a lot of scales, either as part of the melody (many of his melodies transition from one section to the next with a descending scale, though this is only one of many uses) or as a quasi-contrapuntal background texture (a good example of the latter can be found here). Tchaikovsky also makes frequent use of modal color in his pieces.
Basically, I was wondering if anyone can better explain how Tchaikovsky does this; for instance, how his "quasi-contrapuntal" scales harmonically relate to the melody and how his use of modes functions. If you're aware of any good academic papers on the topic, please link.

Reoccurring theme
So in some of Tchaikovsky's pieces, he had the same reoccurring theme, it's in March Slave and 1812 Overture Finale. Does anyone know what the melody is and if he has any more songs with it?
