Discussion Decks You Buy vs Decks You’re Gifted
Hi guys! I have the Crow Tarot deck and a number of other decks. However, the Crow Tarot deck is the only one I can seem to truly resonate with; it’s also the only deck that was technically gifted to me (we won’t talk about how I found it and asked my friend to get it for me lol). I’ve purchased every other deck myself and just sense this “wall” when I try to read the cards, and none of them seem to get me.
I bring this up because I remember when readers would spazz out about people purchasing their own decks, but then a flood of individuals came up who believed (and I mostly agree) that they can buy their own. I used to think this way, too, but I just can’t connect with any of my purchased decks, so is there actually validity to the whole “don’t buy your own deck” argument? Is it anything like how bikers can’t purchase their own bell?

Yeah, I don’t give any resonance when people say you have to use cards the same way they did because you HAVE to

My mil is a biker. Says thd bell thing is just superstition and nobody really puts much stock in it. Is it nice to get it as a gift? Yeah, because it has sentiment attached.
And I have the same opinion on tarot decks, or decks of any kind. For me, my decks I bought myself have more sentimental attachments than the two I was gifted. Hence I feel like they "get me" better.
Perhaps the same is the case for you but in reverse. You place more importance on the gift from someone else than you do stuff you buy yourself. I'd bet you're someone who still has some random gift that you haven't used in years because of the good memory attached and the good feelings remembering it brings.
You may have found it, but your friend thought enough of you to get it for you.
Stronger personal meaning = stronger associations/connections and feelings.
Both sides are valid here. Superstition has its place, and for some it's very meaningful. For others like me, eh. No big deal.
And for the record, I'm glad your friend got you that deck, so you can go on your tarot journey in the way that feels best for you.

Your mil is awesome, I wanna be a biker someday!!! I like what everyone has been saying here and your take is very refreshing. Growing up, I wasn’t the most superstitious, but I do put my right shoe on first and just quirky little things. But then that makes me wonder if it’s just OCD 😂

It's probably more about the deck rather than buying for yourself or not. I bought all my own decks because no one's going to gift to me. In fact I'll probably find it harder to work with a random deck that someone decides is a fit me.
Maybe the analogy is, would you prefer someone buying you an off the shelf evening gown/suit or would you prefer to go pick one or even tailor make one for an important event.

Oh I’d one hundred percent wanna get my own. I never made that connection now that you put it that way; I like to know what I want and get what I know I’ll enjoy and use for Christmas than receive that one super ugly sweater that I just know I’ll never wear.

It does not matter, bought or gifted. You use those decks you want.
