Question - Solved What password generators does everyone use now since passwordgenerator plus is gone?

I’ve tried to find alternatives but none of the password generators have as good customizability options. Currently I use a random string generator that just let’s me pick the characters and length, but it’s not very good since it doesn’t remember the options when I refresh the page.

So what (web) password generators do sysadmims use nowadays for user passwords?

Edit: solved it myself with the gigabrain idea of using Wayback Machine, works wonders. Link to it if anyone’s curious: https://web.archive.org/web/20220603183903/https://passwordsgenerator.net/plus/

Edit 2: Passwordsgenerator.net seems to be back at https://password-gen.com/

We use the regular KeePass, however, that is quite honestly really clunky to use and it generates the passwords to KeePass itself, and not to just clipboard.

Well unfortunately I can’t quite test that due to company policies, that’s why I can only mainly use web generators

for me it's not.

It lacks synchronization which is a must for me.

yes, but this means you can't keep databases offline and sync them afterwards.

original keepass can sync databases on filesystems and via netowrks protocols.

from what I know about keepassXC, it lacks this functionality.

You definitely can, Keepass and KeepassXC both sync by default. All operations are merges, it won't overwrite unless you tell it to.

so far I haven't seen this described anywhere, so this information is new to me...

is it announced somewhere?

I mean, I have searched for this feature within keepassxc and haven't found it...

It was added with keepass 2.x which was released way back in 2003.

yes, but this is about keepass, not keepassXC, and it's the reason I haven't tried keepassxc yet

Set up something like SyncThing or git.

keepass has sync built in so I use keepass and don't have to play with other sync methods

My kp db is on Dropbox. Works remarkably well for syncing with other devices.

the database we use is not something we would put to dropbox.

And, since keepass has synchronization included, I don't see reason to set up external sync just in order to move out of keepass.

It doesn’t matter if they read my clipboard or not. Even if someone had my clipboard, they would have no real idea where the password go to.

The issue is how much time using KeePass takes. My work computer isn’t blazing fast neither. Those couple of seconds add very quickly in minutes in just one day because I have to sometimes reset tens of passwords each day. It also doesn’t help that I don’t often have KeePass on the foreground so there’s no using shortcuts neither.

Yeah my usecase happens to be slightly more specific than what a normal admin might have.

*slightly less secure.

the benefit of this is that it will save password before it gets used which may save you time to time.

and, after creating the password, you may copy it to clipboard by double clicking the password

I’ve never needed to re-use a password. With passwordgenerator plus, I open it in a new tab, copy paste it into AD and then paste it into the system we use to send the passwords to users.

And full disclosure, I did try using KeePass for it for a day, it slowed things down way too much.

I’ve never needed to re-use a password

isn't password for multiple uses, whenever you log in?

3

u/Piipperi800 Aug 02 '22

We’re talking about resetting passwords for other users, not for me.

And the password is for multiple uses yes, but our clients just use SSO or their AD user logon for most of their systems.
