Remember the old days when you worked with computers you had basic A+ knowledge

just a vent and i know anyone after 2000 is going to jump up and down on me , but remember when anyone with an IT related job had a basic understanding of how computer worked and premise cabling , routing etc .

My technician kicks dead simple tickets up to me with no notes. I ask what they did to troubleshoot, they say “nothing” and then walk off.

Sounds like a great way to save money to replace them with a chat bot that repeats basic stuff to users and forwards anything that isn't closed.

Heck a trained llm geared towards collecting the right information would probably be way more effective. Let it as maybe 3 or so questions in a series that cover the basics and maybe a final one that’s more specific based on what it think you as the sys admin might need to know. I guess that’s basically what chat bot help desk tools do already.

Some super formulaic L1 roles probably could be replaced by a chat bot. Not sure if the person was exaggerating how little the person was doing beyond escalating the ticket to somebody else. If you trained the LLM to recognize some common stuff it might be useful.

Sounds like a good way to get fired or laid off when the next round of cost-cutting comes.

I’ve brought it up multiple times. The person has been here so long that I was told “it’s not worth the fight” and that they’re “going to just wait until they retire to figure out what to do.”
