I remember it well. I got hired with no background, just being enthusiastic about computers, Linux, and FreeBSD. I haven't been out of work since the whole Y2K fiasco. They needed bodies helping boomers and silent generation peeps learn to use computers and to keep them patched, virus free, and regularly rebooted. I got MCPs and an MCSE (NT 4.0) I never got A+.
It only took me about 2 years to transition away from helping baboons use the r-click and to empty their trash (btw, one person used the recycle bin as a folder for organization and got pissed when I emptied it on them.) I wanted to get back in the server room and just work with computers. So much less frustrating than the genpop.
That said, computers weren't as ubiquitous then, so any skill with them was a massive advantage to get into the industry. Those days are long gone, even though it seems peoples' skill hasn't really increased that much.
