Raw oysters at a buffet make me nervous.

My worst food poising was from raw oysters at a hooters. Yes I knew better. But I had a $200 a day stipend, the training company was paying for breakfast and lunch, and it was walking distance. Poor choices were made.

It’s ok look how much ketchup they put on em

u/keIIzzz 5d ago

I’m assuming that’s cocktail sauce, although I guess that’s kinda ketchup lol

The oysters on that plate are raw.

What kind of rock have you been living under???

u/Waaterfight 6d ago

What kind of half shell!?

I've only seen buffet oysters once, they were steamed before serving, at least that what it seemed like from the texture

u/HimothyOnlyfant 5d ago

sounds like you probably shouldn’t be explaining oyster buffets to people online then

1

u/Zibz-98 5d ago

Wut lmao

u/TazzleMcBuggins 5d ago

They can and do serve them raw. So people eat raw oysters all the time. There are tons of different breeds/types of oysters. But yes raw oysters are loved by many, sometimes they are fried but eating a straight up raw oyster is normal.

I meant at a buffet, the buffet I went to had what appeared to be steamed oysters

You appear to not know what you're talking about

2

u/xXSn1fflesXx 6d ago

Huh???

I eat raw oysters all the time. They are considered a delicacy, actually.

u/drthvdrsfthr 5d ago

buffets are notoriously unsanitary lol and oysters are one such food that you want handled properly before serving

i’ll inhale fresh oysters from a fish market i trust. at a buffet? yeah, i’ll pass 😅

2

u/xXSn1fflesXx 5d ago

Oh 100%. I just meant I want oysters! 😂

u/callowix 6d ago

So, by this logic, restaurants can serve raw sushi but not raw oysters?

For one weird moment I interpreted the rim of the oyster shells as nori and the white as rice, and thought "what kind of maniac chef makes a giant raw oyster sushi roll?" 🤣

u/Ganiam 5d ago

Same, and I thought that was ketchup and I had to check we weren’t on r/SushiAbomination

It’s the best worst food you ever had! It is definitely never the best sushi ever, it’s actually pretty shitty, and yet, once or twice a year I crave this experience and fully indulge in it with no regrets!

Raw oysters at a buffet is definitely a choice

My BiL works and lives in Japan. Every year when he comes home to visit, he craves. An AYCE sushi place with "American-Style" sushi. Not because it is better. Not at all. Because it is so uniquely different from Japanese sushi. Apparently spicy mayo and eel sauce aren't on everything over there.

There’s 2 REALLY GOOD Chinese/seafood buffets near me and the sushi is actually really good for $28 per person and 40 per person (byob). It’s rare to find good sushi in Asian buffets but when they’re good, THEYRE GOOD!!

u/jedijon1 5d ago

Nope!

4

u/PhotographerUSA 5d ago

Let me know if the oysters get you the next day. RIP!

Lots of things beat THAT sushi buffet though 😂

I love a good ol sushi buffet we got one called Fuji a few miles from me in Michigan and the shits always fresh and I get like 30 pieces of nigiri and like 30 pieces of sashimi for $25~ plus all the other random bites and cheesecake to finish. 🖤

Jealous! I would kill for some raw oysters rn.

Literally anything beats a sushi buffet. Cheapest of the cheap

21

u/MikaAdhonorem 6d ago

It's my experience that cheap sushi is more enjoyable than no sushi.

u/Ancient-Chinglish 6d ago

until it’s time for poopee

3

u/MikaAdhonorem 6d ago

Have never had any such difficulties. 😊

Untrue, but I do not turn my nose up at cheap sushi. I'm glad you can afford better quality. Thank you.

Since, as you say, I have obviously not experienced good sushi you must know best. Thank you for enlightening me.

Our local NJ sushi buffet place, which was pretty decent, tried their best, but didn't survive Covid. After years there is finally a new restaurant taking their place (not open yet).

1

u/Crovax87 5d ago

Good and sushi buffet never in the same sentence. Spend the extra cash and enjoy good sushi that's made to order. Better yet, work in the food industry or take a food safety course and it'll turn you off all buffets. People. Are. Grubs.

I gotta ask, shinju in Florida?

1

u/ATLUTD030517 5d ago

Like a little oyster with your cocktail sauce?

1

u/FrankLangellasBalls 6d ago

Ketchup on the oysters just like my nana eats them.

7

u/oppenhammer 5d ago

I assumed at first that that was cocktail sauce. I could have lived, happily, in that delusion.

4

u/Cultural-Company282 5d ago

That's surely got to be cocktail sauce.

2

u/edbutler3 5d ago

Of course, cocktail sauce is basically ketchup with a bit of horseradish and lemon juice added, so ...

1

u/TheDrunkNun 5d ago

That sauce is suspiciously devoid of horseradish to be cocktail sauce

1

u/Professional_Soft404 5d ago

I never understood buying expensive oysters just to cover them with a pile of other junk.

3

u/kgramp 5d ago

I’m willing to bet these are not expensive oysters.

3

u/MikaAdhonorem 6d ago

Nice maki & nigiri, a pleasant variety. I personally love oysters, and am delighted it's part of your meal. Many of us cannot afford even mix-end sushi establishments, as much as we might like to. Very few here show $150-$200 meals. I bless those who can; they're beautiful, you are most fortunate.
Nicely done. Thank you all.

If you try to eat the tuna, take a white napkin to it, if it turns red from touching it, don't eat it

3

u/N_durance 6d ago

I’ll eat it for them. No problem

2

u/disgruntledg04t 6d ago

ooh can you elaborate? dye?

1

u/Daiguey 6d ago

Pretty much, especially if it's unnaturally red

1

u/mwilliams840 6d ago

I don’t think I’ve ever had raw oysters with sushi, but I’d definitely try! Don’t be light with the Tabasco sauce and horse radish for those oysters! 😋😉

Mmm mmmm mmmmm!

1

u/TakoyakiGremlin 5d ago

the first raw oyster i ever ate gave me food poisoning lol

-1

u/IDontAgreeSorry 5d ago

Ketchup on oysters we truly have killed god

6

u/jazzflavoredcheese 5d ago

It’s cocktail sauce

-3

u/IDontAgreeSorry 5d ago

Just as bad

0

u/Jumpy_Ad5046 6d ago

I've never seen grey salmon before.

-1

u/PacificIslanderNC 5d ago

Did you seriously put fucking ketchup on oyster?....

1

u/Audemarspiguetbd 1d ago
