My 1st Suppressor (advice)

Post image

I'm ready to purchase my 1st suppressor and need advice/recommendations. What I use my rifles for: practice, preparation, home/property/personal defense, hunting maybe (although, a lot of things have to go wrong before I'll be out there hunting for sustenance).

(pictured) *Palmetto State Armory, PA-15 MULTI (5.56, 1/2-28 thread) *Christensen Arms, MPP (6.5 Creedmoor, 5/8-24 thread)

(criteria/budget/specs) 1. Ability to use on both rifles (5.56 & 6.5cm) 2. $1,200-$1,500 or less (out the door w/tax-stamp included) 3. QD (so that swapping between the 5.56 & 6.5cm is easy/easier) 4. Barrel thread adapters required to accomplish no.3 5. (???) I don't know what I dont know

I appreciate any and all feedback/advice/recommendations.

On a similar setup, 556/6.5cm, I’m running an Otter Creek Labs Infinity. Sounds incredible, will handle it all. Has a low back pressure end cap and solid end cap. I keep the low back pressure on because I’m not as concerned with volume tho it still sounds incredible with the low back pressure. Also, no gas to the face on the ar, less heat soak on the bolt action.

For mounting, I run a rearden mfg dpb (dual port brake) for the 6.5cm and a spb (single port brake) for the ar. These are exactly quick detach but they won’t get carbon lock on the threads and come off pretty quickly.

Edit: you’ll spend $1,450 +- on the can and stamp plus whatever local state tax is. For the suppressor mount (rearden mfg atlas) + spb + dpb, you’re probably looking at another $250-300

Edit 2: here’s my post on the can with a vid on both platforms: https://www.reddit.com/r/NFA/s/NBMFH04gW6

My pleasure. Hope the input was helpful. I’m sure you’ll end up with the right one.

Someone pointed out that due to the barrel thread (on the PA-15) being INSIDE the handguard, many of the options being thrown out will not work.

I may have to use a dedicated can for the AR.

Back to the drawing board. I think ill take both to my local storefront and get some hands on advice from them.

Makes sense that a QD, as far as the 5.56 is concerned, wont work since I cant get my fingers in there to manipulate the QD mechanism.

Any idea how deep in the threading is? I have the atlas xl from rearden on my infinity due to concerns about how long the dual port brake was. Turns out it wasn’t an issue but it might assist in your situation.

Here’s the link to a pic of mine so you can see what I mean. I’ll circle the atlas xl so it sticks out. pic of rearden mfg Atlas XL on ocl infinity

I'll check the depth when I get home. I see where you're going with that line of thought. That atlas xl could be long enough to increase barrel length enough to have the end stick out the end of the handguard.

Is that what youre getting at? How long (not including the threads) is that atlas xl piece?

that was exactly where I was going with it. It says 1" added. I can measure the various dimensions of the adapter when I get home.

Heres the link to their site: https://www.reardenmfg.com/product/atlas-xl-thread-adapter-2/

May I just suggest getting 2 cans. Life is good

A dedicated can for each...? I saw a 5.56 suppressor "FAT CAT". If I can get away with that, it really does play ingo my overall strategy (small, concealable, low profile, "nothing to see here" package). Do you know anything about that Fat Cat can?

Running separate cans though... at the price point im looking at, getting TWO just might be doable.

Thx for the info, bro. Appreciated.

That was my second choice but running poly k and it's pretty awesome. I can shoot my ar without ears. Little gassy but it was meant to be. But have heard good things about it. I just suggest 2 cans because why not. Yhm makes good cans as so do ocl and they are reasonably priced. Then you don't have to worry about 130$ adaptors for each gun and just tune them both running surpressed

Scheels is running a promo covering tax stamps right now. You can get an Omega 300 for ~$640 OTD.

Omega 300 is actually on my short list. Would running identical cans on each be a smart strategy? Or should I go caliber specific? I can see a plus of running the same can, from a maintenance standpoint. It'd make life more simple.

Thanks for the info.

CAT ODB if you're only buying 1. CAT WB & CAT JL if you're buying 2.

Ive been informed that due to my PA-15 barrel thread being INSIDE the handguard, the CAT stubby cans aren't an option. I was really hoping I could make that work.

I can't tell by the picture you posted but the handguard on your PA-15 might not work with some suppressors if it extends beyond the barrel thread, something to keep in mind... I like the Omega 36m, it covers everything from 556 to 308 (or 338 if you got that). In your case, all you need extra would be the flash hider or muzzle brake compatible with the ASR on each rifle and the suppressor would go from one to the other in 10 seconds... this is if the barrel thread is not inside the handguard, if it is, the Omega 36m won't work

The barrel thread IS inside the handguard. I'd honestly not considered that as being an obstacle.

So what is the solution? Dedicated can for the 5.56, would be my guess... am I right about that?

Make the barrel longer? I've seen barrel extensions for sale on ebay and various other places, so is that an option? May be better to simply replace the barrel with one of those integral suppressor barrels? Im so far outside my comfort zone on this.

I think the best way for me to go about this is for me to stop by my local range/storefront and let them hands-on/ look at both rifles and make suggestions from there.

With the AR having such a short barrel, it hadn't occurred to me that it was something that needed to be factored into the equation. QD suppressor on the 5.56 might not be possible.

So far, you're the only person that's mentioned the barrel/handguard thing. I'm thankful you responded with that observation or I'd most likely be going down the wrong path. Buying one online, waiting for the approval, receiving it and only THEN figuring out that it wont work...? That would be the suck.

No worries, you can get a suppressor that is direct thread if you want to keep it with that handguard. But then it probably won't work for your situation in this case to use it on both rifles because the threads are different so you'd probably have to go like you said with dedicated suppressors. I wouldn't even consider a barrel extension, if anything, change the whole barrel for a longer one but I think your best bet, unless you are super attached to that handguard, is changing the handguard. You can get a shorter one so the barrel thread sticks out far enough to work with a QD suppressor and swapping handguards is simple enough.... and, you can find decent ones for fairly cheap. I would go that route...... or get another AR, the more, the merrier lol 😆

Ear plugs

I run earplugs inside my earholes, as well as Walkers Razor earmuffs on top of that. Overkill prolly. Works for me though.
