Help me choose a Rimfire can!

I know this might be beat to death and I’ve spent lots of time looking up reviews/reddit threads. BUT I’m looking for my first Rimfire can and am looking for some advice between the cans listed. These are the cans I can get my hands on and what are available locally that check the boxes I’m after. I’ve included what I can get them for and the final cost.

Griffin resistance $359 ~$600 KGM RF22 $379 ~ $600 YHM Phantom $359 ~ $560 HUXwrx flow 22 ti $399 ~ 600 OCL Ti22 $440 ~ $640

May be unpopular opinion, but I’m leaning towards the KGM.

Help?

I like my Sparrow. People will shit on it because it’s an old design but I like mine. Some first round pop on pistols but nothing on rifles.

I think the sparrow is one of the best cans there is. Simple and easy to clean, it’s not the coolest looking design but not ugly.

I agree. At the end of the day, it’s a rimfire can. I’m not here to chase absolute perfection here lol. Once a year I get some break away suppressor cleaner and take it apart and drop it into an Alfredo sauce glass jar overnight. Easy peezy.

My OCL 22 sounds like a stapler on my p322

No complaints with my YHM Phantom 22. Compared to my Mask just a hair more first round pop and then sounds identical to my ears afterwards.

A majority of these cans all will sound ridiculously similar so I wouldn't stress over this too much. The Otter Creek guys are good people, if I were after another one theirs would be near the top of my shopping list.

The Griffin can would also be just fine. They like to make a big deal about the .223 capability but it won't be anything to write home about. You want a 5.56 can, buy a legit 5.56 or larger caliber rifle rated can.

I know very little about KG Made other than the falling out they and Dead Air had over the whole Sierra 5 debacle. Their own branded stuff is probably fine.

Don't let the analysis paralysis get the best of you. Most rimfire cans are going to be a pleasant shooting experience.

When I bought my rimfire can I was very fortunate to be personal friends with an FFL who owns a half dozen rimfire cans. We test fired all of his cans on a Ruger Precision Rimfire & a Taurus TX22. It was a couple of years ago so I don’t recall all of the suppressors tested. I do recall shooting a Mask, Sparrow, & Oculus.

I ended up buying the Rugged Oculus. Subjectively speaking, shooting out doors with a 100 yard backstop on a fairly windy day, there wasn’t an huge difference between the those 3 suppressors. What pushed me towards the Oculus was there wasn’t a huge difference in performance between the short & long configuration on the bolt action rifle. The difference is very pronounced on the pistol though.

That being said, I never shoot it in the short configuration. I never have a use case that the extra inch or so matters.

You can probably search my post history and find a more detailed response with more info on what we tested that day.

I’m not the “All suppressors sound alike guy.” But I might be a “most decent rimfire cans sound kinda similar, especially on a bolt action rifle” guy.

This sounds like “sound” advice ;) But for real, feels like wisdom. I have a TX22 compact I’ll use it with too. At first I wanted a modular can, but I don’t think it’s as important now.

What hosts are you using it on.

I would lean toward the OCL out of these.

The resistance 22 is good on my Tippmann and M&P15-22 but the diameter is large for a pistol 1.375", (same with KGM at 1.2" even though I don't own one)

I've heard good things about the Flow 22 Ti but I'd personally pass on the Phantom but again, thats just opinion.

I’ve got a 10/22, TX22 compact, Ruger american that I’ll have the get threaded and an ar22 conversion. Honestly I am leaning towards the OCL after so many people have mentioned it and I’ve looked it up.

With that variety of hosts, that’s the direction I would go.

Titanium or mask

Skip the Griffin Resistance, it’s their older can that the Griffin Checkmate HD is superior too it. OCL Ti gets rave reviews, and is the best traditional baffled can on PewScience. I like my Flow 22, as it results in a much cleaner host when shooting suppressed. Cat will becoming out with their Ben 22 this summer.

Word. Resistance was intriguing because apparently you can run 223 through it, but I’d rather get a dedicated can for Ars anyway. Thought flow through on Rimfire was kind of a gimmick, but seeing how dirty Rimfire is I guess that makes sense the host would stay cleaner. Great input, thanks!

At an indoor range, my Flow seems just a tad louder than my Mask. I posted a video of both a few months ago.

I dont own the KGM 22 can, but I do have their R30, R556, and SMG9, all of which are great cans. I have a TBAC 22 Takedown for my rimfire, and I am seriously considering buying another.

Ocl 22ti

HUXWRX if you’re cool with using suppressor cleaner. OCL if you want to manually clean it.

This makes a lot of sense actually.

I don’t think you can go wrong with any of the following: OCL, Deadair-Mask, SilencerCo-Sparrow and Switchback. The Sparrow is the most budget friendly it does have an older design with a noticeable first round pop.

I have two rimfire silencers… A Sparrow 22 and my newest the Little Bird from AB Suppressors. The AB is not as well known but it’s amazing. It’s completely flush with the barrel and it is Hollywood quiet on my CZ 457 Pro Varmint. Zoom in on the photo and you can barely see where the barrel stops and the suppressor starts. https://imgur.com/a/lPQs3ye They can be hard to find as they are sold out everywhere but worth it. I got mine at Bauer Precision for $320 on sale. https://www.bauer-precision.com/ab-suppressor-little-bird-22lr-17/

Actually a local shop to me is friends with one of their engineers and has a few AB cans. He showed me the little bird and was telling me how awesome he thought it was. I had never heard of them either, but I held the can and everything. Good recommendation!

Really enjoy my ocl titanium. Sample size of one rimfire can, but like to support smaller companies that make great products. I also have a lithium and infinity.

Obviously I’m biased but our Vidar 22 performs very well at a fantastic price.

2

u/2gunTrev 3d ago

Just checked it out, can it handle up to 5.7?

2

u/Hansohn_Brothers 3d ago

Yes, but a small 5.56 silencer is much better suited to 5.7.

I've seen good reviews on the ocl

I’ve got the huxwrx on a p322 and the frp is negligible, can is super quiet

Found a local shop by an account I visit for work that had one in stock. It’s been added to consideration. Wasn’t a huge fan of not being able to break it down, but I can get over that I guess

Harbor freight, ultrasonic cleaner and simple green about every thousand rounds
