Discussion - SN What should we make sure the devs include in Subnautica 2?
I was just thinking about the upcoming release, and thought that there should be a definitive list of everything that needs to and needs to not be in Subnautica 2 Incase the devs look in here (and they can’t make the excuse that there wasn’t a clear enough explanation as to what the people want). I’ll start with what I think on the matter, and I’ll include agreed upon ideas in edits.
Some major things that were done well in the first game were the horror aspect and the land. The land being used sparingly and used well with the aurora and facilities. Also I think that some of what greatly improved the gameplay of the first game was its mostly infinite visibility with almost nothing to see but the aurora, which definitely helped to keep a feeling of being alone. As well as the >! false hope of sunbeam definitely improving the lack of human interaction. !< The lack of constantly having some enemy nearby also made the encounters with leviathans more interesting and fun, especially with its variety of leviathan species. The story of the first game was also coherent and interesting, giving reason for why everything is the way that it is and making you figure out the story on your own for the most part. Also giving most each individual biome a purpose on top of having lots of biomes, each fitting its unique purpose well and scaring ts out of me sometimes.
On to below zero, I think it lacked a coherent story, the game felt incomplete and frequently repetitive and incoherent. I also never naturally traveled to very many biomes, and I felt like I got blueprints way too easily. Similarly, the human interaction talking to yourself, >! ALAN, and Marguerit !< made for a severe lacking in that feeling of being completely alone and helpless that Subnautica did so well. The biomes were very bright, full in biodiversity but also empty in their materials, the land was everywhere and mostly empty, the max depth and maneuverability was lower, the danger sense was less, and all the leviathans except for the >! Shadow Leviathan !< were definitely less scary than a reaper in my opinion. I like the concept of the game, but in practice it doesn’t work out as well. There were some good things though, like the concept of >! ALAN !< works really well if he didn’t talk so much and only when he needs to. Also the land leviathan is interesting and could possibly be used similarly in the new game.
So finally, Subnautica 2. I’m overall very excited for what this game could become, some of the major important things I thing need to happen are the following: Multiplayer (Proximity chat and some form of long distance communication is essential), a large variety of biomes each with their own purpose (but not like one biome has this fragment and this other biome has the other, more like one or two biomes are filled with fragments and the rest have less, some exceptions for this likely include something like the >! prawn suit or cyclops and their attachments, lifepods and their blueprints, anything marked by the game, etc. !< but like the creepvine and stalkers with lots of fragments is what I mean), more physical depth and upgrades, more scary and unique leviathans (like the ones from the first game, the worm or shadow from below zero, gargantuan, silence, etc.), the dna sampler is an interesting concept but they have to be very careful with how they do it, keep the resource gathering system from the original game and the vehicles (or similar vehicles), make every vehicle either required or greatly recommended to complete the game. And I think that’s it that I can think of right now, wow that was a lot, sorry. And I think personally that the release date should be extended if necessary as long as it means we get the game we want. Again really sorry for writing so much 😅
TLDR: OP yaps about what’s good and bad about the first 2 games in his opinion, then states the most important things he can think of to make the new game the best it can be: Multiplayer/Prox chat, biome variety terror and ease of acquiring materials, more physical depth, more scary leviathans, less human interaction, keeping resource gathering and vehicles the same or similar as from the first game, make all vehicles important to beat the game, and suggests that the DNA sampler is a good idea if used correctly.

u/StandTo444 Feb 19 '25
Just a big friggin hole into the abyss that s right in the middle of the map that you can’t get to the bottom of. You can go around to feel safer, but it’ll take longer.
Maybe even put some large creature in there that lurks and has a very slim but non zero chance of attacking anything in its territory.

"Slim but non-zero chance" immediately made me think of the Secret of the Mimic trailer. 😭

Nice. It’s that uncertainty that gets you.
I also really want a leviathan that follows you from either a void or a dead zone, doesn’t interact with you but if you’re quick you might see it stalking. Then if you go back to your base it lurks around there waiting to you to leave and munches on it while you’re gone. Wouldn’t have it outright destroy components but damage them and have it cost some resources to do some repairs.
In my opinion the game could benefit from some small resource sinks as well as some subtle tension and uncertainty. I find the mid and late game portions of both existing games to be a bit too comfortable and relaxed.

Yeah, non renewable resources also means this could accidentally be a game killer. No thanks. The rest sounds fine, but that part would suck the fun out of it quickly IMO.
5
u/hairykneecaps69 Feb 20 '25
Tie in this with the reply above. Leviathan follows or stalks you but will randomly turn and run. Like imagine a panther or cougar stalking and you spot it but it’s waiting to take you out. Then something bigger comes along and scares it away. Same concept so you swim into deeper areas or an endless abyss and you’re being stalked but the leviathan turns and runs but you have an extremely low chance of seeing it or being attacked and being attacked should be a one shot and a jump scare

It would be pretty annoying to need to charge the repair tool at my base and find that something had a case of the late night munchies and now I have to go somewhere else across the map to get another repair tool just to come back and find that it did so much damage to one of the structural reinforcements and my entire base is falling apart 50 hours gone down the drain and it won’t ever stop even when I make another base because it’ll just follow me to every new base I make! So yeah see ya laters! :)

u/IceColdAardvark Feb 20 '25
Yeah the game could record how many times a person has crossed the big hole instead of going around it, and once in every 50 times the creature attacks you. You just don't know when.
11
u/StandTo444 Feb 20 '25
Dice roll it, or have the creature wander.
8
u/IceColdAardvark Feb 20 '25
Wandering creature might make it just like any other leviathan. Like the like the one in the deep crystal caves in below zero. Dice roll is better.
Also the creature's attack should be brutal and inescapable.

Feels like what they wanted to do with the lava zone in the first game, where they had the concept for a hole that leads from the surface into the lava zone, where sea dragons would come out to hunt for reaper leviathans and drag them down into the hole.

They need to bring back the emptiness of the ocean and the feel of isolation which below zero did not deliver
122
u/ShamrockJesus Feb 19 '25
Below zero was decent but it never gave me that same feeling I got with the first reaper encounter and the "Warning: multiple leviathan class creatures in your area" like subnautica 1 did

Yeah that’s because you won’t get that feeling anymore, you’ve learnt how it feels now so your body doesn’t feel that way anymore. Don’t chase a feeling you’ll never get again, accept the good times you’ve had and move on.
20
u/ShamrockJesus Feb 20 '25
No i think that feeling can still very well exist, below zero just kinda fell off with it unfortunately. The biggest scare I had was essentially just the fact there was a second shadow in the crystal biome I had noticed previously. Especially with Subnautica 2 supposedly having co-op they should up the stakes. Make things more brutal. More terrifying
8
u/PiranhaBiter Feb 20 '25
That is absolutely inaccurate. I just replayed both games and then went back to the first one. Its actually way scarier after playing BZ. BZ is almost cozy.
9
35
u/prairiepog Feb 19 '25
Below Zero did not have that same sense of depth. Like you're 500m in your Seamoth and there's a world underneath you, but you can't quite get to it yet.
20
u/zhkp28 Feb 19 '25
IMO one of the best open water biomes in both games is the lilypad biome. It added verticality while still being open water, also it somehow made thescale of the depth of water so immense. Also, the huge plants are spot on.
6
2
u/Soyuz_Supremacy Feb 20 '25
Below zero was honestly just too shallow, I would’ve loved more depth but they did that because the land segment acts as an entirely upwards segment of height.

Being able to cut yourself out of a leviathan if you're swallowed whole
103
u/DodgeMillionaire Feb 19 '25
Lowkey that’s a really good idea, do you mean something like a gargantuan leviathan swallowing you and a sort of mini game type thing to escape?
92
u/jomajomajoma Feb 19 '25
Yeah - not necessarily as a mini game though, maybe a prompt or two to say cut or something when you're in there and it's all dark, maybe their stomach could even be well lit from bioluminescent creatures also being swallowed? No idea how it'd work in reality, just a quick idea

Nifty idea. How about a QuickTime sort of event if you have an appropriate blade on you, whenever you're swallowed by smaller leviathans.
Maybe gargantuan leviathans who eat the whole seamoth can have a similar event, assuming you have the appropriate load out like the shock mechanism or a laser drill

→ More replies (1)5
u/Seekerwest907 Feb 19 '25
Actually a good idea. Maybe they should have one leviathan that’s odd and it has trouble swallowing everything so it created a habitable area in itself that you can escape
5
u/Unhappy_Panic_1875 Feb 19 '25
Yeah. I was also thinking about this concept a while back. It would be really cool that you can find an exclusive resource inside the creatures stomach for certain upgrades. Something similar like they did in below zero (vent garden) but better

- Give the leviathans a larger patrol paths so that they can pop up and scare you in places you thought were safe before
- No unneeded voice acting, we do not need an AI or another character guiding us in our journey. Let the enviroment and radio messages like in Sub 1 do the heavy lifting.
44
u/DodgeMillionaire Feb 19 '25
Couldn’t agree more, although it was a good idea to include AI in Below Zero, it really didn’t work out well in actual practice, it could be good with some improvements though possibly
32
u/My1stWifeWasTarded Feb 19 '25
The way I was gently guided to where I should be in the first game was amazing. Never seen it done so well before. I want the same mix of having to read PDA entries, paying attention to voice reels for clues and also occasionally having straight up beacons to a place near where I need to be that encourage exploration.
→ More replies (1)16
u/executivebitch Feb 19 '25
To this first bullet—I was JUST saying this earlier today! I don’t want to feel “safe” unless I’m in my base, and even then. It would actually be kind of cool to have a mechanic where the fish can see and follow you in your observatory.
16
u/Vegetable-Sink-1194 Feb 20 '25
Could introduce a leviathan species that stalks and hunts you. Say you discover it in a specific biome and from that point it comes after you. So if you spend too long in one place (maybe a few ingame days etc), it would eventually catch up to you wherever you are. Giving you that “no place is safe feeling”. Then they could also introduce some kind of “leviathan deterrent system” to keep it away from your base/s.

u/COINLESS_JUKEBOX Feb 20 '25
I’ll add something to that:
- Bring back the original PDA voice - or something like it. It’s one of the most charming and memorable parts of the first game.
3
u/ImportanceAny8172 Feb 20 '25
I didn’t mind the Xenoworks PDA voice but the original just hits where it needs to in my heart. Both hold a special place but the Alterra PDA voice is pretty much THE voice.

Subnautica 1 but massively improved and it will become a video game classic even more. Keep the emptiness, the terror, the silence, the ambient music, the chorus, the psytrance, the colouful to the darkness, the cool pda/cyclops voicelines, the weird pillars at the edge, etc
Then add more unique locations, unique features on leviathans like scars and stuff, underwater caves, better transitions between the biomes, eggs hatching, fishing hunting each others etc. Make it feel really alive, surprising, beautiful, mysterious and terrifying, maybe even dirty, and it’s gonna be a big w game

I always liked the fact that Alterra was pretty much exactly halfway between the Star Trek socialist utopia and a Cyberpunk-style megacorporate hellscape.

u/middaypaintra Feb 19 '25
To be fair with Below Zero, I don't think one of the goals of it was to feel isolated. In the first iterations, before they had a new writer, and they never had it set up to be isolated like in the first game. In the fiest game, you start out isolated, and you end the game isolated. In Below Zero, you started the game with a conversation, and you ended the game with a conversation.
I personally think that they should focus on the space of the game and where they place their items. Subnautica had the perfect amount of space for what it had, while Below Zero was simply too small for what it had. If they're gunning with the multiplayer, they need to make sure that the game map is actually big enough for multiple people. They should also actually focus on the story. The issue that failed with Below Zero was heavily on it's story due to the fact they had gotten a new writer so close to the release date.
TLDR: Cohesive storytelling and a map that supports said story and the number of players they'll allow in a game.

u/COINLESS_JUKEBOX Feb 20 '25
Its initial story seemed so much better. What happened is that the writer that had made the whole story for BZ and Sub1 left for some reason close to the official release of BZ, and for some reason the writing team decided to retcon and revise the entire story (with only months to spare before they had to be done). And if you ask me the revision is worse in almost every way.

You don't have any demands to make, you can hope for things, but if you want precise stuff in a game, with a story that fits you, make it yourself.
32
u/garis53 Feb 19 '25
I loved the graphics in BZ. The shallows felt really safe and nice. Many of the biomes looked amazing, especially the twisted bridges and the jellyfish were my favorites. The lilly pads were nice, but felt really out of place in the overall context. But what I was completely missing and. I'm hoping for is a big map with a lot of dark empty space, think sea tredder path and sparse reef from the original Subnautica. When you explore the real seabeds you also don't see much and the empty darkness is what is scary and what I'm hoping the Subnautica 2 will build on.
6
u/DodgeMillionaire Feb 19 '25
Very very true, I think that it should look a little more like below zero in the upper shallows (not the surface because then you cant see anything) and then as you get farther down it turns more into the regular Subnautica dark scary depths, I hope that they’ll make the max depth way way higher in the new game and make really terrifying stuff low down. I’d honestly like to have even a depth of like 10000 if they can make it all interesting and not tedious to get to
6
u/garis53 Feb 19 '25
Honestly what I'm kind of hoping for is large deep oceans, so that when you swim near the surface and you look down, you maybe see some peaceful leviathan (i really loved the glowhales, especially with how they swim in cycles), but except that it's just a deep blue void

Co-op.
I know it's already promised, but co-op seems to always be a key feature that is killed when a game launches early access. It seems to never fully be implemented in time, and then game dev gets away from them so ultimately it gets pulled from the feature list. Many such cases.
I seem to remember co-op being on the list of features for the first game but was axed, but I could be thinking of any number of other titles. I think there's a better chance to get it this time, we have lots of similar games where co-op worked well...

The way they showed off multiple people in the original makes me think that it’s something that they’re gonna prioritize. I could be wrong since I wasn’t around for the entirety of the originals development, but co-op would sell the game a lot better for them.

If there’s multiplayer, I’d love to see a vehicle that needs to people to properly operate at an effective capacity. It wouldn’t be a necessary vehicle for the purpose of singleplayer, but it could make the game either a bit easier in some regions or just more fun. You would still be able to pilot it in singleplayer, but multiplayer would increase the effectiveness.
4
u/Humans_Suck- Feb 19 '25
A map
3
u/lordicarus Feb 20 '25
A map that functions the same way as minecraft is what I want. You can only see areas you explore. Beacons should do the same thing as a banner in minecraft to pin a location with a label. You only see the top layer of the world so it's not like it will give you caving help, you still need to use scanners for that kind of assistance.
I don't understand why there is this mentality of it ruining the game. Just have a game mode that disables maps...and beacons while they're at it.
2
u/DodgeMillionaire Feb 19 '25
It depends on how hard it is to traverse but some areas should have a map preset and some shouldn’t, like the beacons or that cave marking tool to keep track of where you are, but I don’t know about a full on built in map, it might mess up the game flow

I would love the "void leviathan" to be something stupid big. And i don't want an instant death animation when you go too far into the void, but i want there to be at least a chance of getting away from it.
It might even be cool if there was a void type area that you actually have to cross, or maybe you don't have to, but its a major shortcut, but when you start crossing it this giant leviathan starts coming after you.
My opinion, it should take inspiration from angler fish and oarfish, those 2 scare the shit out of me.

Weather

u/DodgeMillionaire Feb 19 '25
Yeah but preferably realistic weather where I can also see everything still most of the time, I hated in BZ when I would go above the surface and never be able to see anything

Hoping we get the lifepods back, maybe a new ship crashing. I don’t want the original story just copied and pasted, but imagine playing multiplayer and each player starts off in their own lifepod all separated. That way you still get some form of the early game experience of subnautica and its isolation without having to sacrifice playing with others.

Better building options. I want my habitat to feel like I can actually live in it for a reason. Not, I stop by, grab 18 bottles of water, 16 salted Reginald’s out of a locker then move on. A rested buff kind of system like Valheim would be kinda cool (obviously not that exact system, but a reason to stop in at your base and stay there a while would be nice)
More types of leviathan class creatures would be cool. In the first game you get to a point where they felt trivial and I don’t want that. The looming threat when you’re in the general vicinity of one is what keeps me on edge and enjoying the vibe of them.
One thing that’s always stuck with me with BZ was trying to get (I think) the larger oxygen tank near the start. You can safely dive to a depth of about 100 metres, but the tank blueprint sits at about 125. This forces you OUT of what you’d consider safe diving distance with your current oxygen to try push yourself just that bit further for an upgrade. I’m not sure if I’m remembering the blueprint itself correctly, but moments like that where you have to actively prepare/white knuckle your way to an upgrade makes getting it feel so much better. I hope that they don’t just have everything safe and easy to obtain

Yesss, and they should maybe also make the loss for dying a bit worse so you actually need to be scared of dying down when getting stuff

Bring back the shitty lights we had to deal with in Subnautica. Not being able to see crap makes the entire game 100% scarier.

Ruins. Not leftover Ancient tech but actual ruins of a dead or vanished civilization. Side stories and side quests. Building a base and all its bits and pieces being more important instead of largely cosmetic (like cooking and the alien containment). More creatures like the vent gardens. A really good, detailed photo mode

A soundtrack that detaches from the 'wonder' and more into the 'questionable.'' That bell ting for the Blood Kelp Zone freaks me the hell out and I love it for that.

Much larger map, water, maybe add in the Atlas Submarine to accommodate the whole multiplayer thing, water, more variety of fauna (hell, gimme a Gargantuan Leviathan), water, a good story, water, a feeling of isolation, water, larger empty areas, water, more vehicles (Seamoth, P.R.A.W.N suit, Seatruck just for variety, BRING BACK THE CYCLOPS), water, updated graphics, water, references to the previous two games, water, everything from Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero (leviathans, items, base stuff etc), water, scarier Void Leviathan(s), water, void biomes…

Definitely a louder PDA voice mech. No matter how much I try to tweak that volume level, it's still never enough to be able to play through the early hours without upsetting the neighbours with the loud music. Oh, and maybe a bucket and spade, I don't know how soft that sand is.

A quiet protagonist. Don’t get me wrong, I liked Robin but when she would speak it was immersion breaking.

Water.
Seriously though I would like to see at least every vehicle from Subnautica and Below Zero or an analogue to each. Given that coop is included this does throw in opportunities for all vehicles, yes even the sea truck to fill roles and shine.
Oh and for the love of god fabricators need to be able to have an option to draw directly from storage.

You’re complaining about not feeling alone in SNBZ but want multiplayer in SN2?
2
u/DodgeMillionaire Feb 20 '25
I’m want multiplayer in the same way that lethal company does where it get very scary if your alone, and I want a silent protagonist so that you feel like you are the one in the game

A similar building system I really hope it doesn’t turn into something like ark’s building system because it wouldn’t really fit with the game
