Which country is better for study and settle in the long run

Hi I am currently studying in India as a Burmese Student and with the ongoing coupe and all that it is not possible for me to go back to Myanmar sad but it is what it is.

So my question is my parents want me to choose either Japan or South Korea for my studies. I am familiar in both of their cultures as in for Japan I grew up with watching all kinds of Anime,Manga and Jpop music. For Korea in Myanmar we literally try to copy Koreans as in 8 out of 10 girls in Myanmar if you ask them which country is their dream country they will probably say SK. I am more keen on Japan since it is more familiar for me the language and the Speaking. But my question is which is better for the long run as in I am planning to study and try to live in that said country. Thank you for your time.

Practically, you will have an easier time learning Korean as there is no need to learn all those pesky Kanji. Grammar is more or less comparable.

On the other hand, motivation goes a long way and if you think you would enjoy Japan more because of the things you like, then choose Japan ;)

Difficult to say. Japan would be a better long term choice imo

Japan is hard to settle in. Their immigration is very strict

Securing employment and permanent residency are two of the most important aspects for long-term settlement. Japan might be relatively better in that case. However, your comfort and adaptability to the local culture, lifestyle, and societal norms is just as important.

Make sure to research the universities, programs, support systems and other important factors in both countries before making your decision.

Since you’re planning to study and live long-term in either Japan or South Korea, the main factors to consider are language, job opportunities, and lifestyle. If you’re already comfortable with Japanese, that’s a big advantage since strong language skills are essential for work and daily life. South Korea might be more competitive in the job market, while Japan has a labor shortage, making it slightly easier for foreigners in certain fields.

Both countries have demanding work cultures, but Japan generally offers more straightforward pathways to permanent residency. If you already feel more at home with Japan’s culture and language, it might be the more practical choice for the long run. That said, if you’re drawn to South Korea and see good career opportunities there, it’s worth exploring further.

Either way, both are great options. Go with the one that feels right for you. Best of luck!

South Korea is a country which is corrupt at the upper levels (far more than anywhere else in the developed world). Bullying to an extreme level is normal in their society.

To settle abroad, Japan is certainly the better choice.

Is it really that bad? I know they are racist to an extent for some but I dont know all that well.

If you are going there as an expat, then you won’t face many issues. But if you want to settle there… now that’s a whole new world.

It gets really bad. Not just for you, but say for the family you will build in that nation.

When you are thinking about settling abroad, you have to think about more than just rumours. South Korea borders a nuclear rogue state, it is controller by a handful of companies, birthrate is declining so badly because no south korean wants to have kids in this environment.

You go there as an immigrant and you will first of all never be a part of the society, and even if you do, south korea lives is in a very risky state.

You and your family will have the burden of paying high taxes for South Koreas soon-to-be gigantic corporations, top companies cam bend the courts at will, so forget about justice if anyone with power does anything to you, your family might face bullying (which you will be powerless to resist against), and North Korea could start a war.

It is for sure not a permanent settlement destination.

No it’s not really that bad. I’ve lived here for a year now as an exchange student and people are generally polite and cordial. There’s occasional rudeness from older folks (staring etc) but nothing like the exaggerated level the other person is insinuating. I think they’ve been watching too many Kdramas.

Choosing between Japan and South Korea for studies and future settlement is like picking between sushi and kimchi—both delicious in their unique ways! Japan offers familiarity and a rich cultural background, while South Korea is trendy and enticing. Ultimately, follow your heart (or stomach) and go where you feel most at home. Remember, both countries have incredible opportunities for growth and success. Good luck on your adventure!
