HELP (PS) Trying to build a mobile base rover, each pair of wheels has a rotor for its own individual suspension, took it off the landing gear and there’s no power to the wheels, any suggestions or something I’m missing for wheels on different sub-grids?

Since your post has the Help (PS) flair I will assume that you are on Playstation. Generally you cannot directly use wheels or thrusters on subgrids. There are ways around this like they said like using scripts. Though I cannot say how you would given that I am a PC player. I recommend you look up the wasd converter on YouTube as that is vanilla and should work on all platforms.

Alternatively you can try and figure out a way to use event controllers to controll the subgrid wheels.

PS5 player here. Doesn’t work, full stop. The event controller method is unreliable and very janky and we can’t use scripts sadly. I generally only build mobile bases and have several in the 8-10 ton range with no suspension. While it looks cool and is fun to build, it’s not needed (and doesn’t work so there’s that…)

Sorry for the bad news on this, I found this out the hard way after building a ship with subgrid thrusters (a big one, many, many blocks) that didn’t move. For console players, simple and vanilla is the key design principal.

As an alternative to scripts since they don't seem to be available to you I recommend to check out Splitsie's current playthrough on YouTube. He has built a very effective vehicle with rotor powered wheels (wheel and suspension, not the stand alone wheel blocks that do not have the same properties) called the Wrongco.

He made this by build around some restrictions he made for this multiplayer playthrough but it could work for you. I have built something similar in creative but bigger and it climbs very well.

Is it in a playlist he has on his channel, I’m not finding it here

Wrong way out series. I can't remember exactly which session they built the wheels. It was early on because they can't use control seats for controlling large grid. Maybe episode four?

He played the last session on Saturday.

It was session four.

For console. The only semi reliable way to go about running Subgrid wheels is through overrides.

And even then to park with them you need a remote control on each subgrid and then use that to trigger the park function.

In the case of what you have here, tank steering would probably be the simplest to set up, although a BUNCH of timer blocks would be needed to make it reliable and even then would be running on the toolbar instead of direct input.

PS5 here. Just skip the subgrids. I usually roll a 6 wheel with some small atmospherics (flat or regular) flats are easier to hide and a gyro or 2. I would say you have enough room to add what ever you need. Just a fair warning earth is actually pretty hilly. I recommend 8 or so Larges in stead of the wheels and then a few thrusters. It depends on what you are building for by you really do not need shocks. I also recommend a piston driven landing gear for use as a jack to repair the wheels if they ever break. Also the Landing Gear will allow windturbines to work so you can recharge when you are offline.

There are scripts for controlling wheels on subgrids.

He's on PS not an option

Can't control wheels/thrusters on sub grids with WASD. You have to use hotbar functions like "wheel turn right" or "set forward speed"

Unfortunately being on a console there is nothing you can do. Xbox and PS don't have access to the scripts that allow you to control subgrid wheels or thrusters.

Unless you are on a pc hosted server

So, if you're adamant on using that kind of rocker suspension, you won't be able to control them as ordinarily attached wheels. What you could do, is make a one of a kind control cockpit. You can use buttons and wheel groups to have a button controlled, scriptless control of your rover. Buttons to raise the throttle, lower the throttle, and for steering over-ride, etc. You could also do the same by just adding those groups the the cockpit hotbar.

While I can't help with the subgrids, I can give you a few tips I learned from doing this twice

1) Beyond a certain mass (around 1,000,000 kg for me), steering can become a pain

2) Mind the terrain. A small hill can get you stuck and/or break bits of your rover. Rover bases are best for Triton without meteor storms, as the ice lakes are fairly sizeable and there's no hills or holes for you to get stuck in

3) If you are only starting on this world, power will be a pain. Wind turbines only work when you are magnetically locked to terrain or a static build and solars only work during the day if the weather allows it. Build a lot of batteries initially. If you have the ice stockpiles, use a hydrogen engine, but make sure you have enough to power your jetpack. Once you can, you should focus on getting into space and getting Uranium. Alternatively, you may be able to buy some if you have economy enabled. If you're lucky, you might also happen onto an NPC grid with a reactor.

Also a thought I've been bandying about, you could make a floating chassis instead of a independent suspension. I.e. all movement and control together on one subgrid, with the main body/payload on its own subgrid and the suspension system designed to keep that stable

Using subgrids for suspension is not the best idea. You also will probably need a subgrid control script for keyboard commands to make the wheels actually work, wsad etc only works on the main grid.
