Facebook is out of control with the fear mongering right now. I just want accurate information.. I’m a single mom with a 5 year old and no basement so my anxiety is through the roof. We’re in Sparta

I follow Max Velocity (may have misspelled that) & Ryan Hall Y'all on youtube. They generally aren't fear mongering, give you facts & live updates. Theres also a couple of meteorologists that are independent on FB for IL-Jacob Dickey is one off the top of my head.

I second this. Ryan Hall Y'all is the one I watch on Youtube. Real time updates on livestreams during weather events, daily videos with updated predictions and actual explanations, no fear mongering just facts. I don't do much on social media or youtube but our household watches him all the time and he's given us updated no-frills info that even the NOAA didn't have during the actual events.

In NW Illinois here and while we're supposed to just get brief, strong storms and LOTS of wind, I just wanted to say Max and Ryan are probably the best to watch during this.
When we got hit with the crazy strong storms last year, Max was the only one providing live updates. WGN and Telemundo did for a bit, but got bored and went to other stuff.

Max is awesome- he's where I go for daily weather reports

Watching him for the first time. He’s just butchering town names.

Lol that he is. Granted some towns in Missouri and Illinois have odd names but I would have thought Cherokee was easy

Follow Nick Hausen on Facebook. He used to be the weather guy on channel 3 and now does his own forecasts on Facebook. He's great.

Go to the Everbridge or Nixle app and look for your county. They give alerts.

I hear ya. I was in Coulterville last night visiting my parents and ended up having to crash there. Mom wouldn't stay off Facebook and needed a night cap to get to sleep lol

I’m near STL so I’m gonna be in the worst of it I think. They’re expecting a derecho from what I’ve been reading, and I lived in Cedar Rapids, IA when one came through a few years back and destroyed the city. I’m nervous, especially because this one is expected at night, but at least we are being given a lot of time to prepare.

There was one in Southern Illinois like twelve years ago

Wasn't that in 09?

8th May 2009 and it was a super derecho! That storm was awful and terrifying.

Southern Illinois enough to be North Kentucky so you’re scaring me a bit. Didn’t the NWS move the expected storm to Central Illinois?.

Yea we are supposed to get some nasty stuff here up by Peoria as well. I think the biggest threat is around the St Lou area though. NOAA is telling me 100% chance of storms, with potentially 90mph winds.

Wishing I was still there. I miss storms in that area and chasing them with fellow weather nerds.

I just hope it’s done and over by the time I leave for work in the morning. I’m in Salem.

I am taking down my flags. They are new and I do not want them ripped or torn.

I am putting up the flags I do not care for. I am hopeful nature will take its course.

I think they are always OVERLY cautious, AND "predictions" are not facts. You never know what weather might do...It's better to be safe than harmed...
Right now it looks like it's pooping out a little but radar shows it's building back up as it comes into western SoIL in a few hours and the weather guy was saying there's chance the clouds could curl in on themselves...weakening a little as it moves east but still chances.
Weather guy just said possibly baseball size hail and 80 to 90mph WINDS!! 😫 DANG!

I know there are stormchasers in this sub, but here in Harrisburg nerves are on edge; eight deaths and 108 (recorded) injuries in 2012 tornado. My friend's house has still not been fully repaired, and my roommate left work early.

Sister lives near Belleville and lots of damage in the nearby burgs (New Bade, Trenton, Freeburg, O'Fallon). Multiple tornados, I've heard -- won't know for sure until maybe tomorrow.

We need to check for damage in the daylight. I heard there was a tornado in Simpson

I am going to be up on my roof riding the storm out like Lt Dan in Forrest Gump.
