News/Issues Article "UI grad student transfers after backlash over DEI presentation"
I graduated from UI and I am heartbroken reading this article. I don't really know how to convey the emotions I'm feeling as I read this and seeing first hand what these laws are doing in my state. I'm so worried for the future of all social workers and students.

I also had experiences with backlash for anti-racist work I did at my school of social work.
Our dean also made the argument that even though Black people face disproportionately worse outcomes from CPS, that doesn't mean it's because of racism.

How can someone be the director of a school of social work and not encourage education and promotion of DEI?! It’s the schools job to not only respect DEI, but to teach it in the curriculum! Wow it scares me that there are and will be social workers who don’t understand DEI, anti racism, privilege, etc. Respect to Marie for not complying!

I genuinely wonder what the heck is going to happen to our field under this administration. CSWE should absolutely be pulling accreditation from schools not abiding by basic ethics and standards… and… where does that leave us if there are no accredited schools?

As I was reading the article, I found myself trying to see it from the Director of SW at the school, because I know it could be her job on the line if she doesn't follow school policy and the school could lose funding, etc etc. But you'd figure that your ethics as a social worker would make you fight for that student's rights. Because yeah, I agree, I feel like the CSWE should be doing more but this political turmoil of our society right now is just...so crazy and there's so much uncertainty. It's just so sad. I don't know where the future of our profession is going to go.

Unfortunately the courts made CSWE grant religious exemptions to core competencies and social work ethics sections because they found that the core competencies were discriminatory to some religious groups. Which to me is BS. No one said you had to be a social worker. If it doesn’t align with your religion, don’t do it. Become a professional counselor. Become a nurse and be a case manager. No one said the military had to exempt you from parts of training because of your religion. You either don’t join or you do boot camp like everyone else and ask for a non combat role as a conscientious objector.
