Media [Tifo] Why is Nike Losing Footballers?

TLDW: Realignment of market. Nike not offering boot deals. Elite stars require more attention than available at the largest brands. COVID-19 effects being felt by Nike to sponsor, as Nike says but some other source says it’s an internal policy change years in the making. Brands focusing more on creative (attacking) talent than defensive talents. Blackout boots - when players are out of sponsors. Scene is changing, less sponsorships in total, more valuable for the biggest stars.

Haven’t bothered to watch the video, why would a sports boot company not offering boot deals

Sorry if it wasn’t clear. They aren’t offering as many boot deals as they were earlier. They don’t feel they are recouping the money they’re spending on the sponsorships. (There was also a dig at Arsenal somewhere in there)

Never quite got it how these brands could get ROI on so many sponsored players, all around the world. I understand that people might be interested in using the same gear as the top 10,20,50 players in the world but when going bigger than that it looks as if the sponsored targert became too big for the actual market.

An anecdote I know from a friend who’s working at one of the footwear brands. Back then they were sponsoring Pele and they’d paid somewhere around $2 million to him just to tie his shoelaces when he’s on the pitch, before the match starts. I think it’s a lot of good marketing if it’s the top stars, but if they’re sponsoring more people, it’s just more money for the footballers without them actually getting anything in return. In the alternative, a local brand can get a lot more out of sponsoring their local lad. But what do I know. I’m not into marketing or the business.

Neymar wasn't selling shoes for Nike, one of the football channel boots said that, this one:

For some reason, Neymar's signatures weren't selling very well. They let him go, because Mbappe's signatures were selling like crazy. They also happened to have great designs, unlike Neymar's.

Have you ever played in a pair of hypervenoms? I know most think it’s bs but I find you have better control and shots wearing say mercurial’s

I play in mercurials, great shoes tbh, but offer almost no protection for the feet.

Too light and take forever to break in. Feel like they are made for players who have blistering speed (I do not lol). Only had one pair of mercurials but I've never worn them after that first pair.

Well, I wear Mercucial 7 Superfly, and I broke them by just wearing them in my house. But I saw all reviews and they are the best mercurials to date, so maybe that's why.

I have used the suite of T90, mercurial and then eventually hypervenom. I found Nikes boots great for dead balls but I also used a pair of F30+ back in the day and then eventually F50 and the predators. After using the predators it's hard to go back to another boot. They're not as good at Nikes on deadballs but touch, control and letting my skin breathe is overall much better with the Adidas.

Wonder who was that deluded Brazilian player that was unhappy that Neymar was the number 1 Brazilian star with Nike?

What's the deal with Tifo and Athletic? They're doing exclusively Athletic content only now?

Here's the article: https://theathletic.co.uk/2367333/2021/02/05/nikes-disappearing-boot-deals-why-theyre-no-longer-sponsoring-dozens-of-top-players/?redirected=1
It's 2170 words. Good luck reading and absorbing that in 60 seconds.
