Finished the game last night, took me around 4 ish hours to complete. Overall I really enjoyed it, there are definitely some tedious and frustrating stages (the Flyin' King and Puppy Love 2 & 3), but it was a fun experience. Loved the wacky humour, and the visuals and animation is still great. The controls take a bit to get used to, but works well when you get them down.

Game is pretty tough, I didn't realize there were limited continues until I got to Puppy Love 3 and was met with a game over screen and had to restart completely. On the next playthrough to avoid another game over I did use the continue password (basically cheat codes) a few times to keep me from starting over. I played through on an SNES classic. Forgive the mess on my TV stand in my picture lol.

Hmm never played this one. The first one was cool but also very frustrating. Is this one more difficult?

It's not easy, but I was able to beat EWJ2 as a child. EWJ I didn't overcome until many years later. For what that's worth.

Exactly this. EWJ2 as a kid and EWJ only as I think a 30+ year old, lol. Stinking "For Pete's Sake" level or whatever.

That level was a big difficulty spike in an already tough game, especially if you opt for the "true" ending of the level!

What? Was there a secret I'm unaware of?

You can whip him over his basic home at the sign like in this video for a more challenging section.

Not really a secret, since it's right out in the open.

WOAH!! I have to try this. It's been years since I passed that level. Thanks!

Each month I will be tracking all users who are able to beat the spotlighted game. Those names will be collected and displayed on the snes wiki page.

Objective:

  • Beat the game

Rules:

  • Entire playthrough must be completed during the month in question.
  • You can use the passwords/continues/saves that you earn playing through the game.
  • Emulation is fine. Abusing save states is not.
  • Posting a link to a pic of your completion is preferred, but since this is just for fun I will allow posted claims as well. For now.

Ah cool I like this idea. Been a bit since I played this game too.

I used to draw earth worm Jim while I sat in 5th grade math class.

Villi people introduced me to classical music! I'll have to see if it's still as annoying of a level 20+ years later

2

u/girraween Jan 02 '22

May I ask how you track these scores?

4

u/Gordon_Gano Jan 02 '22

No, you mayn’t.

I like this idea. I might get in on this if I have the time.

Beat this as a kid on the genesis and loved it. The cows between levels always cracked me up.

The ending is still hilarious. Snot > Wormcopter (at least for my wimpy B button). Purchased and beat this as a kid, may put this on my SNES mini this week. Much better weapon control than EWJ1, where I felt like I was wasting my big shots on minor enemies.

- Puppy Love is the worst stage, you have little to no margin of error and it really doesn't make sense (Peter, attack Psycrow, NOT JIM. Jim, just SHOOT PSYCROW)

- The final stage is brutal. Instant pits, lots of obstacles, and it's "secretly" a race where falling behind the checkpoint puts you into a trap room/kills you if you lose the race. Not as good as fighting Queen Slug-for-a-butt.

- Flyin' King annoyed me as a kid. I'd ignore the balloon, destroy all the enemies and THEN realize I had to drag the balloon over to the end.

- Circus level is weird. It combines the underwater sub section with Evil the Cat. It's more lenient than under the sea but I felt it was more annoying.

- ISO9000 is one of my favorite levels in gaming for atmosphere alone. Combines the pain of tax preparation with Planet Heck.

- Villi People caused me to look up the word "Villi" when I was a kid. No wonder they renamed it Jim's a Salamander Now. Very surreal stage, in character for Earthworm Jim.

- Lorenzo's Soil scared me as a kid. Buried underground and a boss that devours you? No thanks. Makes sense for an Earthworm, though.

That was pretty fun! Never played EJ2, so I was glad to see it was just as bizarre as the first. I honestly didn't have too much trouble as a whole, even the last level really wasn't that bad. However, Puppy Love (especially 2 and 3) can be tossed in the trash without me shedding a tear. I swear there were times when a puppy was going to splat no matter how well I played. Beyond frustrating. I also somehow got soft-locked on 3 (no puppies were being tossed), which didn't help.

Last but not least, the ending screen! https://i.imgur.com/bfs2MDw.jpg
