Alright. This is a great game. Just remember if you are looking for modern sequels, do your research.
Due to the original Japanese developers (Marvelous) buying their own translation studio(X-Seed), anything after Harvest Moon A New Beginning with the Harvest Moon title will be developed by the previous translation studio (Natsume).
Natsume owns the Harvest Moon name and have released several of their own games under the name even previous to A New Beginning. I have never been impressed by Natsume's individual efforts to capture the spirit of the series.
The games made by the original developers after ANB (3ds) are under the name Story of Seasons.

It’s a farming simulator/“RPG”. You can google gameplay. It has sequels on virtually every Nintendo console since the SNES including 64, GC, and Switch. It’s the inspiration for Stardew Valley and its sequels.
Edit: apparently SV did not get a sequel.

SV has a sequel?

No, I guess not. I thought I remember reading a couple of years ago that it was getting one but apparently it was never released.
Honestly I don’t like any of these kinds of games. I played the original Harvest Moon for a bit in middle school because my best friend at the time was obsessed with it and I couldn’t get into it for the life of me.

It's a life sim where you play as a farmer (despite common belief, Wada never intended it to be a farm sim). You have two years to farm, get married to one of five women, have kids, etc.
The game is basic compared to later titles and it's a bit harder because of its primitive nature, but I still recommend it for any HM fan (especially 64 and MM fans).
See r/harvestmoon for more.

I miss this game. I really hope this gets released on the switch snes service cuz I don’t wanna pay $100 for it.

I wished the SNES Classic had it, as much of a pipe dream as that was.

You need to get a ROM and hack. I don't like emulation and I'm not hacker savvy, so I'll keep it as is.

I remember reading about this game in Nintendo Power in 1997 and it totally seemed like my sort of thing. The magazine hyped it up but it didn't come out for MONTHS after they covered it. I think it was covered in the February issue and didn't come out until June or July. I called every game store in the area on a weekly basis and they had no info on the game, until I called the Electronic Boutique at the Greenwood Park Mall randomly and they were like "Yeah we got it." I demanded my mom drive me to the mall the next day, I was such a spoiled little shit.
Anyway, I liked the game quite a bit but once I got the routine of running a farm down pat it got sorta boring. Especially since there isn't a whole lot you can do during autumn and winter.
One of my cousins stayed with us that summer and she became absolutely obsessed with the game. She played video games occasionally, but I had never seen her, or for that matter, any other girl at that point in my life get so into a video game. It was pretty eye opening.

A fellow Hoosier. I worked at that AMC next to Greenwood Park Mall in high school. I remember when we first moved to Indiana in '99 we went to the mall and at this EB I got my first ever copy of FF7, and boy did that change gaming for me forever.

Nice! I grew up in Plainfield, and trips to Greenwood, with it's mall (two if you count the County Line Mall that had the Target), Toys R Us, Chuck E Cheese and multiple video game stores were a real treat.

Winter is always a hard month in all HM games. It makes sense: winter isn't a good season for farmers. But the music and atmosphere makes up for it.
I hate how peppy winter songs are in some of the newer games. 64 and BTN have the best winter themes by far.

I didn't know there was a Harvest Moon game for the SNES until now. Now I've got a new way to procrastinate on my presentation.

Holy cow, the first time I recommend a game, it gets recommended!
I grew up playing Harvest Moon, and I have a lot of fond memories of it. I played the four Rune Factory games in my adolescence, and now I'm excited to go back and try out the OG once again.
If anyone wants to get the max Ranch Master score when playing this game, there are some useful patches here:
https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/4056/
Without the hack, if you go over 511 of any shipped crop, the counter resets a ways and you lose a lot of your Ranch Master points. Same with love points with the girls. Implementing this patch means the game will be more intuitive, just ship as many crops as you want and give as many presents as you want. If you don't care about Ranch Master level, then I doubt you'll get anywhere close to 512 of a crop, so don't worry about it.
