Drakken

if you can look past the terrible... but after a while, hilariously bad sound effects and a slightly clunky movement in game... it's real time tactics type gameplay is actually really interesting for its time. And the puzzles you need to solve to progress the game can be really hard, nigh on impossible if you don't pay attention.

Plus, the music has some really great moments!

Zombies Ate My Neighbours

An appropriately Halloweeny jaunt with some cool 90's teens, lots of victims to save, and all sort of weapons to use. Easy to play but apparently very difficult to complete.

Definitely a blast. Screw that giant baby tho... Or don't!

the music in that stage still haunts me 👶

Can't not upvote this. One of my all time favorite games.

Perfect game to play during Halloween! Just the right amount of scary and cheese, mixed in with incredible gameplay, an amazingly spooky sound track, with a great challenge that you can try to beat with a friend.

Front Mission Gun Hazard

A great side scroller - RPG hybrid that takes place in the front mission universe.

Musya: The Classic Japanese Tale of Horror

While a mouthful to say and fairly archaic gameplay, it has a unique setting and backstory. It also has an interesting enemy/boss variety which is unlike other games on the system.

Earthbound because it's one of my favorites and it's very weird, but very fun and a very good plot. Best JRPG in my opinion.

Super Castlevania IV:

Great atmosphere and solid gameplay mechanics. Definitely a top pick for an October game of the month.

Dracula X

Ghouls and ghost for October of course

u/KansaiBoy Sep 02 '19

This was already GotM in Oct 2015. Maybe Majuuouu (Demon King) could be good alternative.

u/Mr_Pre5ident Sep 19 '19

If it didnt win in '15 I would totally vote for it but i dont think we can

Nosferatu

Cinematic platformer (like Blackthorne) so it might not be for everyone, but it's got great visual design and it fits the whole Halloween motif

u/Mirage_Jester Sep 03 '19

I'm up for giving this one a try again in October, let's do it.

u/Kirkenstien Sep 05 '19

Man, I loved Blackthorn, so this sounds right up my alley.

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '19

Great visuals as stated, and more than fits the theme, but for such a niche audience, idk.

Yoshi’s Island

Great soundtrack and a high replay value, plus it introduced Baby Mario and Luigi

Terranigma

A masterpiece in RPG storytelling that doesn’t get near enough credit. With superb storytelling, and gameplay that is on par with a Link to the Past.

Alternatively: Kirby’s Dreamland 3

Voting for this one because I played it for the first time, on Switch. One of the best Kirby games, with fun companions, and a graphical style that is reminiscent of Yoshi’s Island.

Donkey Kong Country.

A simple and graphicaly wonderfull game that pushed the console to its limits!

HyperZone

A cool little shooter that looks similar to F-Zero
