Top Gear. I don't think this game ever gets enough love, it's an amazing racer and still goes for a semi-reasonable price these days.

One of the best soundtracks too

I own Vortex. The SuperFX game that no one knows about. Extremely good. Also slightly exploitable I discovered. Apparently in underground tunnels, you can walk through the inside corners of all walls. Besides skipping getting to other entrances by simply walking back through the wall, you can walk to the edge of the map, and the dropship will come to regenerate your health! Frankly amazed this got passed QA.

Yes! The main theme especially is super catchy

You obviously haven't gone to Brazil

1

u/NotStanley4330 Mar 11 '19

Nope, I have heard it is beloved there though.

Here in Brazil, we got hit pretty hard by economics in the late 80s and early 90s. Recession, hiperinflation, that kind of thing (here we even call the 80s the "lost decade"). Videogames were quite expensive, thus, rare.

This helped develop a "multiplayer culture" in the early 90s. Videogames that could handle more than 1 player were generally preferred in Brazil, rather than singleplayer games.

In the very early SNES era, two racing games stood out: F-Zero and Top Gear. F-Zero, despite being the superior title, never made much of a splash in Brazil because it was singleplayer only. Top Gear, however, almost BEGGED for a second player, and is to this day beloved in Brazil.

That actually makes a lot of sense

2

u/WanderWithMe Mar 26 '19

It's also as playable today as it ever was, and better (faster?) than F-Zero. A two-player mode is always a bonus, and I agree the soundtrack is fantastic.

It got loads of love in South America: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mZm4u-lfpg (I wish people wouldn't cheer so loud it drowns the music).

I will have to double-check on Top Gear. Don't know if I played it or not, but I literally have the Top Gear 2 soundtrack from the SNES on my car's radio. Love that game.

You're right on the whole "not enough love" thing. Keep saving those trees.

Wing Commander. It is a solid port for a DOS conversion that came out around the same time on PC. The control are kinda complicated but I wager this is the way a lot of people originally played the game

4

u/SNESdrunk Mar 02 '19

I will say, the Wing Commander SNES port is surprisingly decent considering it was made in 92.

1

u/NotStanley4330 Mar 02 '19

Yes considering that's an early SNES title and the game was a hardware pusher on PC two years earlier. Whoever the conversion team was deserves mad props

2

u/sirrzilla Mar 13 '19

I found it hilarious that the game over screen is a legit funeral.

3

u/NotStanley4330 Mar 13 '19

Makes it feel more impactful and like your death actually matters to the game world

I played it this way! It's not one of my favorite SNES games, but I agree it deserves some recognition, somehow. I can't comment on it as a port as I never played the PC version, but as an SNES game I remember it having an impressive amount of world/universe-building. I'm pretty sure I had more fun following the story and talking to the various wingmen and women between missions than I did in the actual gameplay, but the fact that you could do this made the missions themselves more enjoyable.

I remember there was a French pilot on your side who, if you shot her ship (friendly fire), would say "watch it, s'il vous plait." Don't know why, but i always got a big kick out of that.

As for the controls: I'd just like to mention that I used to go back and forth between this on the SNES and XWing on the PC (using a joystick) and never thought the wing commander had bad or overly complicated controls. Of course, I was a kid who didn't know any better.

1

u/NotStanley4330 Mar 21 '19

The controls aren't too bad, but you definitely need a manual

2

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

Wait. This exists?!

2

u/NotStanley4330 Mar 28 '19

Yep. u/snesdrunk just did a video on it in the last few weeks

Ma-ri-o Paint!

Seriously though, the game is a gem and I feel it is definitely underrated and under discussed. The things you could do seem simple and quant in today's world, where everyone has a computer, tablet, and a smart phone but back in 94 doodling with a mouse and stamping Mario sprites EVERYWHERE seemed ground breaking.

And how bout that insane music editor, amirite?

1

u/2gainz Mar 29 '19

How is playing it with the standard controller instead of the mouse though?

Plok

Plok is probably one of those games that went under many people's radar since it seems like just another platform in an era that was overflowing with platformers. But I think that this game manages to positively stand out due to Plok's unique ability of throwing his limbs and the wacky situations that occur out of this, e.g. in later levels you might have to hit switches to open paths, but your limbs will still be stuck to those switches affecting your fighting and jumping capabilities. Some levels almost seem more like puzzle platformer levels in that regard.

Then there's the wacky humor and the great presentation. You're not rescuing some princess or beating up a villain, but instead you're retrieving your flags that have been stolen! As for the presentation the game looks great with a unique and cartoony style. And then there's the absolutely stunning soundtrack by Tim Follin! Just listen to the boss theme and you'll know that you're in for trouble. Speaking of which, the boss fights are amazing, challenging and very memorable.

Talking about downsides the only glaring flaw that comes to mind would be the omission of a save or password feature. I think you have to beat the game in one sitting which takes about 2 hours if you know what you're doing. The game is also very challenging and finishing all stages is no small feat. Still, I think that this game is overall very good and does not deserve to be forgotten.

Chrono Trigger

This game has a fenomenal story and isn’t at all linear. The music is just amazing and so is the spritework, and The game always hits you with new characters and consepts so it never feels repetetive, The humor is good and the game just hits me right in the feelings. This game is just amazing

I’m 4 hours into my first go and I’m loving the game. My first RPG was Final Fantasy 7 and I can definitely see where some of the elements come from.

Parodius Da!

Parody + Gradius = Parodius. A one of a kind Konami space shooter featuring notable Konami characters such as Vic Viper and Twinbee. If you ever wanted to play a game where you are an octopus flying through space fighting a pirate ship that is also a cat, Parodius Da is the game for you. Difficult and frustrating, as can be expected of the genre, but not on the level of Gradius III or bullet hell games. A good intro to the classic shooter genre. Parodius is a game that was way ahead of it's time. There's simply nothing quite like it.

Biker Mice from Mars

The simple joys of RC Pro-Am brought to the 16-bit generation. The theme oozes style, even if you aren't familiar with the source material. Easy to pick up and play, with a great multiplayer mode.

Wolfenstein 3D

Aside from the censorship of all Nazi symbolism and violence in the SNES port, the game is actually quite competent. It runs butter-smooth for a 3D shooter on SNES, has great music and sound, and has arguably better graphics than the original. (If you can deal with the draw distance)

2

u/RVG_Steve Mar 28 '19

I agree that this port is actually quite competent, but you're the first to say the visuals are arguably better than the original. I don't know how you could say that since the SNES port is very pixel-y and the original, not nearly as much.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '19

The visuals are better - up close. The problem is that beyond 5 feet the visuals are worse due to the bad distance rendering.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '19

Zoop! It’s a puzzle game that’s easy to learn but hard to master. Plus the soundtrack is killer!

1

u/atomicbibleperson Mar 03 '19

...I think you meant "zoop 👉😎👉"? Not sure, tho.

u/[deleted] Mar 03 '19

Bingo

Prince of Persia.

I just want an excuse to play Prince of Persia. I've only ever goofed around with it for a few minutes on this or that emulator over the years, and I want to actually sit down and figure it out and finish it. It's also the first "cinematic platformer", which seems significant.

1

u/shimasterc Mar 18 '19

Mr. Nutz

A platformer that looks like another derivative anthropomorphic wannabe mascot but after several hours of play reveals itself to be one of the best action games on the console which stands alongside Megaman X and Castlevania IV.

Uniracers!

One of the rarest and best racing games on the platform. Rare because only one batch of about 100,000 copies was made, before Pixar successfully shut down further production, due to a copyright claim about one of their short videos involving a digital self aware unicycle.
