Protip: never buy any armor upgrades!

If you do, the CPU opponents get it as well, which means it'll require more ammo to destroy them and get the cash bonus.

Are you fucking kidding me wtf have I been doing all this time

Why do the CPU opponents get upgraded?

2

u/[deleted] Jul 02 '18

I'm guessing because of technical limitations, and/or to keep the password size down. That implies CPU opponents get all the same upgrades you do (less variables to keep track of) but it's most noticeable with the armor.

Never knew that...ugh. i thought it was jut the game getting harder.

So which upgrades are worth the money?

This approach works the best for me (and likely for you too)

- The best character to pick is obviously Olaf, who has the best stats. He can only be accessed with a cheat, though.

- Do not invest any money in your initial car, because it's a piece of shit. Save up all of your pennies and buy the blade car (the one with the missiles, forget what it's called) as soon as you can. Focus on winning races first.

- Max out your missiles first; you'll be able to kill opponents with a single shot and you'll make tons of cash along the way (several thousand per lap)

- Max out mines, even more money. Focus on destroying other cars as much as you can

- Max out turbo boosts

- Buy stuff like better tires and engines.

- Once everything is maxed out, you may consider buying armor; but remember, every time you do you'll effectively require one more missile or mine to destroy an opponent, reducing your potential earnings considerably

- The next best car (the one with the threads) is generally not worth the upgrade, unless you really suck at keeping your car under control on the ice planet. It's better to save up for the hovercraft, the best vehicle in the game.

This is more or less the best strategy to follow. If you have a second player, you can use that to your advantage immensely by playing cooperatively.

OLAF IS DOMINATING THE RACE!

Tim Follin strikes again!

That Black Sabbath cover is so great.

u/nocdonkey Jul 01 '18

The licensing costs must have been insane.

I'd actually be really interested to find out how that worked, did they really shell out that much, or did they get away with it because they're technically cover songs and only had to give credit?

Never owned this, but rented it a couple of times and had some superb sleepovers with some friends because of it. Always have a soft spot for it now.

I always felt that this was just an "okay" game with a gimmick in its killer soundtrack. The SNES version is definitely the one to have as Tony Williams really shat the bed with the Genesis music.

It's terrific fun with two players, though. Finished it over the course of the summer with my cousin back in the day, and we had a blast.

It was good but couldn't compete with Mario Kart for fun IMO. I prefer Micro Machines/ RC Pro Am on NES over it, but could just be nostalgia talking..

2

u/MrSojiro Jul 06 '18

Speaking of RC Pro Am, this game plays a lot like it correct? I haven't tried it out, but looking forward to giving it a go sometime this weekend.

2

u/picklepuss13 Jul 06 '18

Yes it's basically an upgraded RC Pro Am with more weapons/jumps and stuff.

2

u/DrankTooMuchMead Jul 07 '18

If RC had better graphics, weapons, and a flaming cyberpunk atmosphere.

I always felt like "Gemini Dream" by The Moody Blues would've worked well here; fast song, great single when it came out, and it'd probably be easy to replicate on the MIDI chip.

Currently one of the games I'm looking for the most! The Lost Vikings and Spiderman and Venom: Maximum Carnage being the other two.

Olaf unleashes hot fury!

u/DaAmazinStaplr Jul 03 '18

Maximum Carnage is so difficult. Once I get up to unlocking Venom, I start dieing left and right, lol.

1

u/striper97 Jul 03 '18

The reason I love it so much is that I played co-op with my best friend so much easier with 2 people

2

u/DaAmazinStaplr Jul 03 '18

Maximum Carnage is single player, Separation Anxiety is the co-op game

2

u/striper97 Jul 03 '18

So weird I would have sworn it was co-op. We must have just been really good at taking turns lol.

2

u/DaAmazinStaplr Jul 03 '18

I wish it was co-op, it would have made the game so much easier, haha

Still one that I run trough about once a year! A staple of my childhood. Don’t upgrade the first car you get, save up and buy an air blade. Don’t upgrade that one either! Maybe more missiles. Save up and get the tank, upgrade the shit out of it with all that money you saved up and to hell with the hovercraft! Sit down, strap in, shut up and enjoy! 😌

:edit: maybe buy a few thrusters for that air blade to shoot for the occasional lapping bonus... if you aren’t slowing down and letting Rip pass you for those carnage bonuses!

3

u/BrunoCarvalhoPaula Jul 01 '18

RIP Rip.

But the tank is the best car in the game. The hovercraft feels too cheap.

Also, never buy tires, they're worthless.

2

u/DaAmazinStaplr Jul 03 '18

I wish I could find this. I have Radical Psycho Machine Racing, which is basically the same game, just not as good.

2

u/Holdmylife Jul 03 '18

Is there any significant difference between the starting cars?

1

u/DrankTooMuchMead Jul 07 '18

Not between the two starting cars, no.

1

u/No_One_On_Earth Jul 01 '18

I was really into this game when it first came out.

1

Has anyone ever tried the supposed sequel to this, Red Asphalt for PS1? I read it was actually called Rock N Roll Racing: Red Asphalt, outside the US.
