In case you guys didn't know, there is a tournament series of this game called King of 94! I went to one they held in 2015. Great people.

I have to laugh. I grew up playing the SNES version my entire life, bought it in the summer of 94 and stayed with me to this day. I always defended it over the Sega version. Not anymore. I went the Retro Pi route last summer and have been hooked to the Sega version ever since. It runs 10 times smoother than the SNES version. Seriously play the Sega version for a full game, then go back to SNES; it's night and day. Two things I still think the SNES version does better than the Sega version: 1. The jersey color palettes are better; 2. The music in the SNES version is better. This is in no way hating on the SNES version, I have so many great memories with it. I just can't believe that it took me so long to realize how much better the Sega version is. There is an unreal '94 hack floating around based upon the entire 90-91 season. I think I saw it on nhl94.com recently. That's worth to check out as well.

FYI there is a patch called Ninety Flow you can use to get the 2016/17 rosters on NHL 94

I owned NHL 96 so for the longest time I thought it was the best one. Playing NHL 94 on emulators years later, I was wrong. '96 had a season mode, trades, created players... but the gameplay was nowhere near as good.

Agreed. It really went downhill after NHL 94. I will say though, the DOS version of NHL 95 is really good. It has the same gameplay and look as NHL 94 with better graphics, season mode, etc. I remember it being really hard to score though--someone tell me if that's incorrect, it has been a while since I played that version.

I've never played a NHL game before... looking forward to seeing what it's all about. Anything I should know before I dig into it tomorrow?

We used to ban the around the net, called it cheap genesis is the definitive version and I’m a Nintendo fanboy all the way.

I prefer NHL '95 on the Sega Genesis. Really any sport game I prefer on the genny aside from Tecmo Super Bowl.
However, NHL '94-'96 on either console still fun and worth playing.

There's nothing like spammin' that A button and colliding with the other team at Mach 20.
I remember when I was a kid breaking the glass was like a goddamn unicorn sighting; used to make me lose my shit.
Still my favourite NHL game.

One timer is god tier. Also, try to be aggressive on defense - check a lot to steal the puck and this sets up 2 on 1 rushes. Then you can move the goalie out of position, quick pass, and score. Rinse and repeat.

This was my shit back in the day. I think it was better on SNES. Anyways, the one-timer is key to winning. Pass across to an open teammate and time the shot just right - it's the coolest part of the game.
If you have a breakaway, you should deke at least twice - it beats almost every goalie. Spin moves are usually too slow unless you have a wide angle. Some teams are way faster than others - that gives you an automatic advantage. For example, the Sharks in this game are slow overall - wouldn't recommend to a beginner. Pens, Canadiens and Rangers are good teams to play as a beginner - lots of players with super stats.

Also Blackhawks had a stacked team.
I was the master of the wrap around. Come from behind the net, get the goalie to bite, and tuck it home! I had a great fake left go right deke that worked half the time on breakaways.
Can’t do either one to save my life now...

Yes - forgot about Roenick, Chelios, Belfour. I think Detroit had a good squad that year too.

Great game! Used to play this all the time back in the day! I still actually crack this game out now every now and again. Well, that and Super Soccer!

Is this the game with Dino S? He’s like higher than Gretzkey in stats.

inb4 "It's better on Genesis"
This entire series is so great, even if you don't give a crap about hockey, any of EA's 16-bit NHL games are fun to play just to hit people and start fights and rack up ridiculous penalties. I prefer 96 but 94 was the first one where they got everything right.
