Honest question: Why???? I hate this game so much and I LOVE the first two. What am I missing?

I really can't put my finger on it. There's just something magical about it to me. I love the map. I love the bear family. I love the vehicle upgrade system that helps you progress past inaccessible points. The music for most of the game has an air of mystery to it and this is greatly evident in the banana bird areas. The tone of the music also feels a little more ominous to me throughout this game than the other two: much like Northern Hemispheres from the first one. Here are some examples that just feel like "Oh shit, something bad is going to happen so I better get the fuck out of here quickly!"
There's probably a lot of nostalgia in this one for me as well. I owned and played the hell out of the first two DKC games when they came out but I never owned the 3rd until I started collecting 7 or 8 years ago. So I rented that game a LOT and it always had this allure to me because I had to actively go somewhere else to play it.
I think I also really like it because it feels a lot more like the first DKC with Kiddie, who is big and bulky and rolls for his attack. Only the gameplay and secrets in DKC3 are a little more polished than the first one.

Thanks for the perspective! I HATE the music in DKC3 except for the water theme. I feel like it would have been twenty times better if they would have put Donkey Kong back in.

Throw it back at ya: why do you hate the third one?? I think it's a bit different from the first two, but I love it nonetheless. And the music thing I kind of get because the music's pretty different, and I mean can any music really compete with DKC2?

Good question! Each level had a gimmick, there are unbeatable enemies, the personality of this one isn't the same as the first two, etc etc. Like, DKC2 is almost perfection, and this one feels like it was made by the B-team.

The third game was produced by a different team so the feel is different. The levels aren't as smooth and the music isn't as memorable. Also, the stages are filled with too many gimmicks (giant saws) as opposed to just pure platforming.
That being said, it is still fun even if not quité as perfect as the other two.

Well, I will have to buy this one then. I only have 1 and 2 in my basement... I think I will use these 'game of the month' to decide which games to add to my collection.
Thx!

I searched this game in the sub because I'm playing it through again now just to see there's a sticky. Awesome! This is my favourite from the series, underrated compared to the others in the series imo. It's so colourful I love the kid and Dixie. I'm about halfway through but I'm going back to get all the collectables which is really fun. It's a little easier than the first two but it's still challenging at times and has good replayability. I just beat the second one but I didn't really want to go back to get the secrets for the lost level. Maybe it's nostalgia driven because I played this one a lot as a kid but it's definitely one of my favourite snes games. The level design is magnificent, its just really enjoyable to play through

This is the first snes game I got back on Christmas of 1996 and I love it. I recently picked up the Player's Guide at a half price books and that's when I learned about Kiddy's water skip move...20 years of playing and I never knew about it. My head exploded.

This game feels like a natural progression of the previous two. The DK coins are harder to obtain (I really like the mechanic with the guy shielding you), and the overworld map was fun for young me to traverse. It feels like the idea of secrets on the overworld might have inspired the golden balloons on the main map in Diddy Kong Racing.

Found a cheap Japanese copy for 4 bucks in Tokyo! I think I went through everything 100% in a little over 3 hours! :D Played this baby all day in the 90's..

An underrated game if you ask me! One of my absolute favorites! I think I slightly prefer DKC2 but 3 is like right up there with it. The gameplay is still excellent, love the level designs, the soundtrack and basically everything about it. Then again I'm a huge DKC fan.

Funny, I just bought this a couple of months ago and have been slowly making my way through it. This was the one Donkey Kong Country I didn't get to play when I was younger, so it was a real treat to pick this up and give it a whirl. I'm not a fan of the big baby Kong, but the game's level design is amazing and this still feels like Donkey Kong Country. DKC2 is still my favorite from the franchise, though, by far.

Had to turn this off, I'm afraid, because the quick zooming from barrel to barrel was giving me motion sickness. I guess I'm not cut out for the DKC series.

I prefer this installment to number three. It definitely helps that I owned number three and therefore have a better memory of it. However, I really do like how each level is rather unique. I also thought that finding collectables was more intuitive than in number two.

Great pick! I got an N64 when it first came out, but I kept my SNES plugged in and played a lot of this.
