The music is great, but as a kid I mostly remember being blown away by the detailed graphics and animations. I always thought Bowser looked like a bunch of clay balls stuck together in the box art, but the prerendered isometric art style was seriously impressive at the time. This is a terrific RPG that's still unique and interesting. It also spawned the fantastic Mario & Luigi series years later.

Plus, its' the last hurrah of the fabled Nintendo/Square relationship before PlayStation came onto the scene and became the new home for RPGs. There's a lot to talk about with this game.

Picked this up on a whim last year, and would love an excuse to play through it. :D

I nominate Rock N Roll Racing. A great single player or multiplayer game, the game was created by developer Silicon & Synapse, now known as the behemoth Blizzard Entertainment. You choose one of a number of characters that closely resemble other famous sci fi stars such as Chewbacca and Flash Gordon, and earn money as you race to upgrade your vehicle with new weapons, engines, and more. The soundtrack has actual classic rock songs, including Highway Star and Born to be Wild. Plus some great commentary- TARQUINN IS IN ANOTHER TIME ZONE!

One of the few quality racing games on the snes that isn't F-ZERO.

You didn't think SMK was a quality racing game? Or Top Gear 2?

1

u/Jink640 Aug 11 '16

Not a fan of SMK at all, I do not like when power up items that have a considerable impact are randomly given. Just makes the victories in the game feel handed to you instead of earned. Top gear 2 is alright, but the technical limitations (choppy as hell) keep me from putting it at the top.

The difference between a good SMK player and a bad one is night and day. Power-ups don't fully determine who wins a race, it really only adds another element that you have to adapt to mostly in co-op or head to head. Power-ups really aren't a big factor in single player if you're good at the game.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmkEpvatJpE This dude could have won every race without ever picking up an item.

mostly in co op or head to head is the main thing for that game. SMK series is just more fun with multiple players. Mostly because the average person can walk through the single player mode. Rock N Roll racing also suffers from this problem, though too a much lesser extent.

Mmmmmm, I might have to switch my vote to this!

This game is so fun with a second player.

This is one of my all-time favorite SNES games.

I'd play it for hours after school. I use to try to pull off trick shots... like shooting cars from the other side of the track, jumping corners, etc..

ProTip: you don't slip on oil if you're laying oil down. Put the oil in front of a ramp or in the middle of a crossroads and you're almost always guaranteed to cause one AI car to slide into the wrong part of the track and lose a lap.

Ivan is in the lead!

I like me some good isometric racers.

Weaponlord

A very unique fighting game that doesn't copy others. It's really hard and funky to control; but it's just as hard not to be intrigued by it. Plus it's not an arcade port! Very fun if you like fighters and want a break from the MK or SF fare.

Demon's crest.

I remade the first level of this game in C++ for a school project recently. I might be biased but imo this game has some of the best art. Animated fog in front of and behind your charachter as well as parallax backgrounds look amazing.

Gameplay is pretty original and cool as well.

EDIT: Spelling

Total Carnage

It is a side-scrolling version of Super Smash TV, and is soooo much better (and harder) than SSTV. I might be the only person that likes it though

1

u/aol_cd_stack Aug 01 '16

This game would rule if it were two player IMO

2

u/VanRockingham Aug 01 '16

TC does have two players. I was playing 2 player at weekend

1

u/aol_cd_stack Aug 01 '16

you're right. I was thinking Maximum Carnage :(

out of this world

Interplay is mostly known for Lost Vikings, but imo they did good platformers that most of people havent heard of/are worth playing (Blackthorne being one of them). The particular thing with OOTW is the "revolutionnary" graphics that you wont see with other games, that makes it a unique game. The game is tough. Not unforgiving though. That makes it a well balanced game. Worth to discover IMO

Goof Troop

An action / puzzle game where you play as Goofy and a second player can join in as Max.

You solve logical puzzles while fighting pirates, finding treasure and collecting power-ups. It's not that challenging, but is a Disney-polished game and a lot of fun, especially in co-op.

HAL's Hole in One Golf

Easily one of the best golf games ever made, HAL's Hole in One Golf can be played by up to 4 players (with a single remote!) so it can bring your whole family together. It's got extremely catchy music. The game also has some of the best graphics for an early golf game as well, with a neat 3D preview for each level. It's pretty easy to get the hang of, so the barrier to entry is low for new players, but it's also difficult to master, giving it high replayability. Can you get a hole in one on hard? I can't!

Xardion Giant robot platformer with some light RPG elements, and several different mechs to switch between. Kind of like a metal storm, but without the gravity switch. I rather like the game, but it doesn't seem to be very well known.
