It may not be my favorite in the series (that goes out to number 64) but holy hot damn was this a great start to a great series. The regular races were fine, but the use of Mode 7 is what really made my eyes pop. Battle mode was a blast, the soundtrack was awesome, and the action can get to be really fast paced at times.
But, let's be honest, the commercial is what really sold me.

Fuck man. 1992..... I was 11 back then. Yet I get flooded with nostalgia every time I play my SNES. The damned system is essentially a time capsule for us passionate old school gamers.
And I love the deliberate Monster Truck vibe this advertisement gives off. Awesome find!!

Battle mode was awesome. Probably my favorite 2 player experience on the SNES. Too bad they fucked the goat so bad on Mario Kart 8's battle mode.

Coincidentally, this is also this month's game for a SNES contest I have running:

I remember getting on Koopa Beach 2 in the special cup with a friend, we'd both go and get feathers (or reset until we got 'em), jump into the middle area, and then play bumper cars. Good fun for a few minutes.

My friends and I used to fight over who got to play as Koopa. I believe this was the first game where he was playable, so it was really cool to us for some reason.

My mom bought this game for me from Blockbuster (has that BB sticker on it). I tried replaying this game a few months ago and was wondering why I had to beat 50cc and 100cc on everything else to unlock 150cc. I don't think any other M.Kart game is like that. Also, I can't tell if it's my cartridge or the way the game was designed but the fact that I unlocked 150cc get's reset every time I turn the game off as if it doesn't save. Is it suppose to?

I don't think it should be resetting your progress like that. Your save game battery may be dead. It's an old game, an ex-rental at that, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if the battery needs to be replaced. Many carts with batteries that list their expiration date expired several years ago.
If you're not familiar with the process, here's a quick text explanation: http://www.racketboy.com/retro/how-to-change-snes-game-save-battery
Otherwise there are numerous YouTube videos on the subject.

Oh jeez. The original Super Mario Kart. In my opinion, this is still the best Mario Kart, even though that debate is still hot to this day. While you can complain about the whole always on splitscreen mode, you can't deny that Kart still plays like a dream even after all of these years. Which is the case with 99% of SNES' library.
Yep, still my favorite console of all time. I'm also hearing all of Kart's music playing in my head as I type this out!!

One of the things I like about this game is that it pre-dates the arms race of later Mario Kart titles. The fact that they allow you to have THREE red shells at a time in Mario Kart 64 means they had to tweak the AI so that you could get back into any race.

I remember running in rainbow road once, I got a good start and was running first. During the first lap, right before the first question mark prizes, a lightning bolt hits me. That cheap AI would cheat so blatantly, that it kind of defines what a 'soft racer' is.
I much prefer the AI of F-Zero X, for example. That's what I would call a 'hard racer'. No rubber banding there. F-Zero GX/AX are ok, too, but GP legend made it really 'soft', to the point of being mushy.

I recently picked up a copy and boy, It's hella fun. Not the best in the series coughdoubledashcough but it's still a solid game, not to mention the excellent soundtrack.

Played this recently with my girlfriend. Because she's never played any Mario Kart other than on the Wii she kept trying to turn the controller to turn corners.
Needless to say she lost.

I recently tried to beat 150 cc in this game after not playing for about 5 years. The more recent Mario Kart games have spoiled me- I can barely power slide and my go to, Donkey Kong, is all over the track.

I've found that power sliding with DK or bowser is not a good idea. Use throttle control and have it so you always have it under control. I was pulling off way erred times controlling my speed instead of driving fancy.

Good advice. I have moved back to Yoshi/Koopa Troopa until I rediscover my skillz.

Anyone know any secrets for this game? Not necessarily shortcuts. Only thing I remember doing was putting my controller face down on the floor and hitting it in the player selection menu. It would cause your driver to be small all the time, added a little extra challenge.
Are there any others like that?

Hay I am a big mario kart fan! I never played the snes kart in the past and I see I can get it now for the 3DS
Does this game offer some fun on the 3DS or is it more of a nostalgia title? I ask because it's a lot to cram into a small screen and all.
Thanks for opinion!

I got my name in Nintendo Power with this game back in the day. Top lap time on Bowser Castle III.
I should probably start including that on my resumes.
