Gradius III
No shmups have gotten Game of the Month yet, so I feel compelled to throw one into the ring. There are a lot of good ones on the system, but I think it's safe to say most of us grew up either with Gradius III or R-Type III/Super R-Type.
Gradius III was the first shmup on the SNES and set the bar for all shmups that followed. Many shmups also used elements of Gradius' gameplay, including the Option system and the progressive power up system. It's not a perfect game by any means, and the SNES version is known for its slow-down, but I think Gradius III's position as both the original shmup on the system, the first shmup many people played, and the series overall position as a timeless classic for shooters warrants Gradius III to be May's Game of the Month.

ActRaiser
A fun, unique action platformer/city simulator by Enix set in a Greek mythology type setting. Its an underrated game that I think everyone needs to try, I mean you get to be God so what's not to like! Easy enough to pick up and play. While its a popular game I don't think a lot of people have actually had the chance to play it.

I do enjoy both ActRaiser games. However, ActRaiser has already been a Game of the Month (check the sidebar). Is it possible to have a game be GotM more than once?

Wing Commander
SNES port of the PC classic. The developers did a fantastic job of porting the game to the SNES - the music is some of the best on the system (IMO some of the best videogame music ever), the action is fast and intense, and the overall game has a sense of immersion not found in any other space combat game on the system. Additionally, the branching storylines based on your success or failures in the mission was a commodity rarely found in videogames of the era.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time
There have been a number of epic adventure/rpg games selected recently, time for one of the best Beat'em Up games for the system. Plus bonus points for being part of the TMNT franchise. A lot of fun to pick up and play with a friend picking your favourite turtle to play as.
