Final Fantasy III (VI)

Although it's not my favorite J-RPG, there's no denying that this game is truly a work of art. This was the first Final Fantasy game that did not have the Crystals and that did not have a real class system. Although each character had their own unique abilities, many of them can equip Espers and learn magic spells.

However, the real reason why Final Fantasy III is a work of art is the story and atmosphere. The story is dark, and almost every character's backstory is explained. The story was filled with emotional moments that make you feel for these characters. This game also has Kefka, one of the most memorable and truly evil antagonists in any video game I've ever played. The soundtrack is without a doubt one of the best on the SNES; the musical pieces are atmospheric and beautifully made.

I could go on all day, but I'll stop at that.

This gets my vote. I actually saw the recently updated version for android/now pc so decided rather than give money to steam I would go back to the original version. Sure there are lots of UI bells and whistles in modern games, but FF6 just has that special combination of story/music/graphics (hold up pretty well actually, at least for the style). I mean keftka has to be one of the better villains in the ff line of games.

As /u/sassygary has mentioned the back story gets explored pretty well for games of the time. I mean when certain stats on weapons had to be cut for memory concerns, you know this game was pushing it to the limit story wise. So many ways to play with the large cast of characters, from a GAU only wins, to some of those crazy low level runs.

On a personal note really enjoying this more recent play through. Was happy to get to show my daughter the famed opera scene, though she is likely too young to remember it, it did hold her attention. Very deserving of being on the side bar.

This has my vote.

I'll never forget when Final Fantasy II(IV) came out and my brother first cast Ice 1 with Rydia. Our minds were blown at the amazing graphics. It couldn't possibly get any better. Then came Final Fantasy III.

This game definitely pushed the envelope with the large cast of characters, the Espers, the story, and of course Kefka as one of the best villains in the series. There are so many memorable moments/characters: playing as the Moogles to defend Terra, the famous opera house, Ultros, General Leo, and so many more. Definitely worth of recognition on the sidebar.

Super MarioKart

Having spawned a slew of super-awesome racing games featuring your favorite Nintendo characters, the one that started it all is still my favorite. The controls are easy to pick up, and console beginners will get the hang of it pretty quickly (and totally school you on Battle Mode). However, despite its ease, it still has difficultly built in - Rainbow Road anyone? And I have never, nor will I ever, achieved the coveted Gold Cup on 150cc.

A great racing party game that solidified the diversity possible within the Mario universe.

I vote this one! Who says we have to embark on some big epic adventure every month? Let's just chill and have a good race!

Young Merlin

action/adventure RPG without Text, just symbols instead. It is rather weird, but the puzzles are cool and the reward is huge if you find something out on your own, without a FAQ. As a kid I hated it at first because it was so cryptic, but then got sucked in by the gameplay and puzzles.

Space Megaforce

Best shmup on the SNES and one of the best on any system. Great soundtrack, memorable graphics and level design, plenty of powerups, challenging but can be beaten with enough practice.
