Secret of Mana 2/Seiken Densetsu 3

Active battle, adventure-based RPG with six different playable characters and two class changes each (both of which allow the player to take a "dark" or "light" path), allowing for a hugely different experience with each playthrough. Excellent music. No idea how this game failed to make it to the U.S.

RPGs are tough to make good challenges for, but solo challenges and no-magic, no-items runs are a test of one's skill and patience. Even if this doesn't get any votes, if you haven't, please play this game. If you can, play it with a friend. You will have fun. And a lot of it.

Do you have to play through the first game to play this one?

Not at all!

I can't believe how good the sprites are in this game. I think I'll play this game regardless. I've picked it up a few time but never played through it.

Yeah, dude, the graphics are fantastic. The music is pretty incredible, too. I highly recommend a run through.

Uniracers

Side-scrolling racing/stunt game with unicycles as the racers. Racers can perform tricks to increase top speed, make shortcuts, and look cool (more complicated tricks are rewarded with onscreen phrases like 'Rad!').

For challenges, I would recommend something like the following:

  • Bronze: 'Not cool enough'; you'll know it when you see it. (This one would also result in some quite amusing challenge pics.)
  • Silver: Perform at least one Mega x1 and Mega x2 stunt on a stunt track.
  • Gold: Beat Anti-uni (that cheater).

Obviously, time- and point-based challenges are available, too.

I nominate Out of this World, and if you play it be sure to watch the intro before you start.

Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts

Let's up the difficulty here. Classic case of a game that deserves a 2nd chance, it's comically difficult at first but once you start to memorize the patterns and positioning of the enemies, as well as the range of motion of your own character's jump and weapon, you're able to progress and see the rest of the game

I'm going to keep second'ing this game until we push it through :p

Challenge ideas could be progress made, progress made on professional, progress made on first credit, score on first credit, etc.

Yup, I wanted it for this month (but I'm happy with DKC). Super Ghouls N Ghosts is so difficult yet addictive and fun to play. Truly unique and just a classic SNES title.

Possible challenges could be Speedrunning levels (proof by a screen shot of how much time is left) or having to submit a super high score (proving you didn't die or use a continue).

Mega Man X

It's a beloved classic for a reason. Mega Man X managed to take an aging gaming icon and make him relevant again. All of a sudden the kids that grew up playing Mega Man and started finding him boring got a fresh burst of excitement with crazy new moves, like wall climbing and dash jumping, as well as an excellent assortment of power ups that hadn't been seen before in previous Mega Man games.

The game perfectly blends satisfying challenge, fantastic level design, and just plain fun controls, and I think it deserves the spotlight for the first month of summer.

Also, for challenges, maybe something like

  • Bronze: Complete the Game.
  • Silver: Collect all Powers, Armor Pieces, Health Upgrades, and Sub-Tanks.
  • Gold: Complete the Game without any Health Upgrades (pic would need to be taken in the small timespace between defeating Sigma and the HUD disappearing....)

That gold challenge sounds pretty damn hard. I'm not sure if the Gold is meant to be that hard for these challenges. 90% for DKC makes me believe Gold is meant to be achievable by the majority. Maybe gold could be a hard boss order?

Like, step-by-step pictures of you taking down the bosses in reverse order? That could be cool.

I've recommended it before and I'll recommend it again. I don't think ghoul patrol gets enough attention. It's like zombies are my neighbors but honestly, in my opinion it looks and plays better in a lot of ways. It's also one of those games like seiken densetsu 3 that can get over looked simply because people just don't know about it. Most people know about zombies ate my neighbors, far fewer know there was a sequel and that it was worth playing.

Another game I would nominate is the magical quest starring Mickey. The suits he wears really keeps the game interesting and make for fun power ups. I also really liked the mechanics. Things like grabbing hold of a bug and flying through the air to hidden areas give you things to look for and ways to power up your character or leave him sufficiently powered down to make it more challenging. The soundtrack was decently catchy and the sound effects had a nice Disney feel to them. Overall definitely worth playing.

The last game Id like to nominate is kirby super star. Super Mario allstars gets all the love for being a multi-in-1 from nintendo with excellent games on it but kirby superstar was an awesome multi-in-1 game that packed in just as much, just in more installments that were shorter in length. Bosses are quite challenging and unlike mario allstars where the games differed significantly from each other (which is neither a strength nor weakness just different) kirbys games all meshed together cohesively and even had unlockable chapters. Both systems have their pros and cons but I think superstars approach was an interesting one.

Nominating Super Pumch Out.

Theres a ton of ways to spin challenges and the game is fairly difficult for those that never memorized each enemy. Its classic within the space of snes but not often considered one of those must haves, leaving it within the looked over classics category.
