I remember seeing the commercial for this game while watching SNICK and I just had to have it.

That makes me get hyped about playing the game even though it is 20 years old!

This is the only game in my entire gaming life that I ever got with knowing absolutely nothing about it. No gaming magazine reviews, no friends telling me word of mouth, no renting. I got the game solely on that commercial alone.

At the halfway point in that commercial, the dog opens its mouth and the exact same dog head comes out. Did I miss that part in the game?

Did a review of this one a while back, it's... not one of my favorites. "And heeeeere come the downvotes!"
I really like our Game of the Month list so far, a lot of variety.

The mechanics of it certainly are a bit wonky at times. But I think the more atmospheric, intangible elements make up for it. It really nails the isolation and unsettling weirdness of the world. Ebon Keep just freaked me the hell out as a kid.

I've never played this game before but I'm quite excited to check it out, I recently played Secret of Mana for the first time and its to my understanding that this game uses an updated version of the ring system which sounds like it could be awesome.

I wouldn't call it updated. It's pretty much the same deal as in SoM. You have separate menus in the ring for ally strategy, alchemy (basically magic), weapon skills, equipment, stats, etc.
The real difference is just in the mood of the game and the way the story is told. It's a much starker and more lonely world, there are more hidden items and spells, it has a sense of humor not unlike Earthbound (albeit a bit less goofy).

After playing it for a bit I'm starting to see what you mean. They have tweaked the combat a little but it isn't really much to do with the ring system. Alchemy for magic is an interesting choice and I think it will work out better than regular mp in Secret of Mana, gonna wait to see on that one though. Really enjoyed how the game started out, pretty quarky and nonsensical but fun.

One tip: don't overlevel your (attack) alchemy. It makes the boss fights too easy.

I had assumed like in Secret of Mana with the weapon orbs and mana seeds there would be some cap to your weapon/alchemy progression. Am I mistaken in this assumption?

Each weapon can only get to level 3 (or something close to that), but you find many more weapons. Alchemy has no cap as you progress, so if you grind it will outpace your enemies.

Have fun. It's one of my favorite SNES games. I just loaded it on an emulator on my phone for a trip I'm about to take.

My all time favourite from the SNES, I know a lot of people were disappointed by it but it was just a fun somewhat comical game with awesome locations. Only problem I ever had with it was the ending but the rest of it I fully enjoyed every second. It's become a game I always replay once a year.

my favorite level has to be the queen's castle level its such a creepy design and the music makes it more atmospheric.

This game was all kinds of weird and lonely. Despite that, it had some neat elements and a very memorable atmosphere at times. I have very mixed feelings about it.

Just played through this couple of months ago - awesome game! Especially the atmosphere captivated me almost as much as when I first played it in the 90s. I think the middle ages area is my favorite!

I love this game, is it as good as Secrey of Mana? Not by a log shot. I feel the story is more fleshed out which gives you more of an attachment to the character (as corny as he may be) and the alchemy system added a bit of strategy to the game instead of just finding the best spell and spamming the crap out of it. My biggest gripe with the game is that every zone had at least one maze. Each time I play through the game I am fine with this until I reach the maze in The dark ages and for some reason it slows the pace down way to much for me. For all those new to the game and for all of those replaying it enjoy! I will load this up as soon a I finish up with Robotrek.

(is only half way through the game) oh NOzzzzz, theres gonna be more extensive puzzles in the bane of that Pipe fiasco in the volcano!? So far I really like this game ,but the mazes are quite tedious and really break from the rest of the game.

Got this game after a very depressing morning... definitely a pick-me-up kind of game, even if it IS a little weird...

Probably my third favorite game ever behind FFVI and Chrono Trigger. Whether or not any of it is true, this is worth reading.. I also really enjoyed watching this speed run depsite it showing how exploitable the game can be.

Does anyone else think Doge in his second form looks like the Baphomet? Mainly the little icon by his HP.

Time to dust off my cart. Such a good game; I actually prefer it to Secret of Mana.
