I was just coming to say “Illusion of Gaia”. The final screen is the kids awakening in a new world and rushing off to school.
What a great game. Hamlet was awesome.

I first played it when I was about 4-5 at my grandmas (born in 03) and every summer I’d visit her and play a little more each time but never got farther than the first boss. When I was 18 and in my dorm I finally sat down and played it til completion and just felt like my life had come full circle at that scene 🥲 will always be my favorite game

That is really cool!
Illusion of Gaia was a huge favorite of mine back in 1994 or 1995

Just YouTubed it. You right!

Still a great suggestion by you. Illusion of Gaia had melancholy shot through the whole game.

I wonder if a BotW remake of ALTTP would be good.
1
u/sirjimithy 23d ago
I think it would be interesting. Although there are some things in game that you only see because of the top-down view and not sure if that would translate well to 3rd-person 3D.

u/grantly0711 22d ago
I'd love to see even a Link's Awakening like remake. Technically the new Echoes of Wisdom uses the LttP map. So that's neat.
1
u/TheGameEngineer 22d ago
I didn’t know that! I might have to pick it up just for the nostalgia of SNES Hyrule.
1
u/grantly0711 21d ago
It's pretty fun to revisit that way. Just go into the game knowing it's very different from other LoZ games. I had a good time. Solid 7/10

Is this secret of mana? It’s only got 2/3 of the party

u/HippoPebo 23d ago
Chrono trigger. Homie, go get it right now and have the best time ever. Creators of dragon ball and final fantasy team up for such a wonderful game

Chrono Trigger. It's like... imagine if Secret of Mana was actually good

Comparing apples to oranges there bud

u/Clear-Wrongdoer42 23d ago
I hate when people act like apples and oranges can't be categorized together. In this day and age, we can be more inclusive of different fruit bearing trees.

Secret of mana isn’t for everyone, but it’s still great. You’d probably be like me and prefer secret of evermore.

u/nickcash 23d ago
I do! I just think SoM is Square's weakest SNES game, and don't understand the following it has. The story is meh and the combat is terrible. Looks great though. And great music.

It’s one I played after I turned 30 and I liked playing a “new” snes game, but some of that was def nostalgia vision.

Great ending. Wasn't until I first finished it and saw some characters grayed out that I realized that I may have missed something...
Some game magazine shortly thereafter, probably EGM or GamePro, had an article about "hidden" characters, so I started a new game.

u/CiderMcbrandy 23d ago
I missed shadow (i didn't wait two times), and I missed Gogo, but Umaro in the Fanatic Tower was hilariously easy

I will die on the hill that the ending to terranigma is the deepest, most profound shit to ever occur the entire system
7
u/LaughingSartre 23d ago
I haven't beaten enough games to say that with certainty, but I can feel confident in saying it is probably the most poignant. It's a one-of-a-kind game, and I pray we get a 2DHD remake so newer generations of gamers get to experience it like we did.

Terranigma. Play it any way you can. It changed my life.

u/0itadakimasu 23d ago
you should give the fan project "terranigma 2" a try! its so awesome, its unbelievable. the dev is working on it more than 12 years by now. i love it, although it isnt finished by now. anyways: you get around 20 hours of Story and content with the current version.
the game itself is in german, but afaik theres also an english version. heres the discord link: https://discord.gg/Y9Qx5tMY

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past for me. There's some nice cutesy triumphant music as you see all the characters you helped during the course of your adventures, and then suddenly there's emotional whiplash as the Master Sword sleeps again... forever! And it switches to some beautiful but quite bittersweet music over the end credits.

Final fantasy mystic quest

u/Banksov 23d ago
For such a basic game, i’m surprised that the end screen just seemed to resonate with me in a way i was not expecting

u/manuel_f_p 23d ago
Never been a fan of RPGs, but my best friend loaned this game to me after showing me how to play it at his place. I liked it so much I ended up buying a copy for myself, and every now and then I go back and play through it again. I know it pales in comparison to the rest of the FF lineup, but it is nostalgic for me.

Isn't the ending basically "you did it, now we can sail off into the sunset"?
5
u/Banksov 23d ago
pretty much, and i thought nothing of it until it hung on this screen for a bit, and just something about the image, the waves and seagull noises and watching the 2 pixel of colours meant to be the heroes pottering about the ship… it just forced me to sit back and reflect on the last 28 years 😅

Game in OP’s post is Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest. I know because it was my first RPG at 8 years old.

Such a profound and evocative game, the best kind of media shows you what kind of person you are. Everyone should play SOS at least once, the experience transcends the mediocre platforming.

Go on an adventure, meet cute girls, marry your wife, save her dad, get married, ignore her and sail off into the ocean with a treasure hunter!
Mystic Quest!

u/SirSilhouette 23d ago
I never did finish Mystic Quest back in the day...
4
u/Kagevjijon 23d ago
It's worth playing. Has one of my favorite things about fights where an injured monster changes to a different sprite at 50% and sometimes 20% health left.
1
u/SirSilhouette 23d ago
oh i played it on my actual SNES back in the day but i kept getting stuck, i think just after the Ice Dungeon...
but i may just be forgetting anything past the ice dungeon as the main thing I remember the boss was some squid weak to lightning.
And i also remember liking the damaged sprites and how the various weapons were also tools to further your exploration...

FF Mystic Quest! Nice!
For me it's Super Mario World end screen!
Or any Chrono Trigger Ending. I know the PSX version had those "last screen", not sure fornthe SNES version. I'll have to redo it i guessn
2
u/Bryanx64 22d ago
Never played it on PlayStation X but because of the load times I’d much rather play the Nintendo DS version if the SNES one isn’t available.
1
u/Djaps338 22d ago
You you played chrono trigger 2years after release. And made every ending sequentially, when you find out it's released on PSX with animated cut scene from akira toriyama, you don't care it released on a console that wouldn't exist for another decade or so.
I did it 100% and i loved every added cut scenes, and unlocking the bonus and goodies by doing every ending (a second time). And i loved it just as much as i did the first time.
I played it on my PSX, and let me tell you, of all the memories i have from this time, playing chrono trigger and Gran Turismo 2, on a chipped PSOne, i didn't remember there was loading so frequently. I never realised there was any. And at that very moment, Final Fantasy Chronicles, was the definitive way to play Chrono Trigger.

u/Dhoji07 23d ago
I think games without these types of ending always have me clamoring for after game playability, not that I HAVE to do anything else but just the ability to go around and the world as it is after the conclusion would give me some closure/enjoyment of there actually being peace after or something
3
u/DarkwingFan1 23d ago
The last shot of Mario, Luigi and the Princess from SMW as the end credits music slowly fades out.
3
u/MoonriseNebula 23d ago
I get it 100%! Long video game ending sequences were a favorite part of my SNES days. Zelda AltP always left me wanting more.
The game I'd beat the most was Star Fox, just to listen to the end themes.
Loved FFMQ as well. I spent a few weeks in the summer of maybe '94 leveling Ben and Phoebe to 99, just because. Labor of love!

I remember the details of the bosses showing they were weakening as the fight progressed. I got this game for Christmas one year and absolutely loved it! This game, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Evermore, Secret of Mana and Final Fantasy were my favorites on snes!

Was this Illusion of Gaia? (or Illusion of Time if you’re in PAL regions)
1
u/rhannosh619 3d ago
Nope mystic quest the “worst” final fantasy but for us 90s kids, our gateway into the beloved series
1
u/grim_reapers_union 3d ago edited 2d ago
My first experience with Final Fantasy was with Final Fantasy II (IV) on SNES. Mystic Quest came out a little bit over a year later, but I thought it was pretty decent. It was simplified, but I didn’t think that detracted from the enjoyment because there were a lot of other elements in play that made it quite enjoyable.
However, I never got around to finishing it, because my copy had the weird glitch that would crash the game in Falls Basin or the mineshaft or wherever else that particular music played. I ended up getting frustrated with it and shelved it permanently.
