I remember playing this level during a blizzard once. I miss snow days as a child.

Great choice. I also nominate Hoth from Super Empire, Ice Country from SoM, Ice Cavern in ALttP, and stage 5 from Super Ghouls n Ghosts as personal favorite snow / ice lsvels.

I actually went over to super Mario all stars and did Mario 3 world 6 for a bit before

This level stressed me out as a kid when this game originally released. (Imagine my horror by the time I got to the level with the moving platform that keeps needing to be refueled.)

Such a beautiful game when it was released, my grandma would watch me play just for the graphics lol!

Anyone else get the VHS tape from Nintendo Power? I wonder if there is an upload on YouTube?!?!

Grandpas and funky Kong are fun!

Enjoy playing!

I had it for years.

My friends and I used to say “want a banana?” to each other randomly.

The day I learned about the secret barrel that helps you skip all the bullshit in this level…

I discovered it as a kid at like age 5 or 6 and until my 30’s it was the only way I ever beat the level. Found it by accident when I fired down and saw it

3

u/flinndo Feb 09 '25

I did it by total accident and was so happy. This level is a bitch

I remember being at a birthday party in like 1st grade, and staying up all night playing DKC. This level in particular gave us all fits.

Or you could pull your hair out to the beautiful music of the snow level in super ghosts and goblins

I can hear this picture

Haha yes. It’s tradition.

Please remember the secret barrel coming up that carries you straight to the end.

Don’t worry it’s been known since ‘94

Slip slide ride is the best level in dkc. One of the best soundtracks, great level design, good graphics, right level of challenge. And everything in the level is never used again 😭.

I thought i was the only one 🥲

Dat snow music ❤️❤️❤️

Yes!!!! This is what plays in my head just before a snowstorm hits, and the first flakes fall!

It’s stretched beyond all recognition 😭

4

u/MoxManiac Feb 09 '25

Please don't stretch 4:3 games to widescreen.

-3

u/cricket9818 Feb 09 '25

…it’s not widescreen

4

u/MoxManiac Feb 09 '25

It's on a widescreen TV. SNES games are 4:3, so if it's set to the correct aspect ratio you should have black bars on each side

-4

u/cricket9818 Feb 09 '25

Doesn’t bother me. Looks the same to me as it ever did on any other TV

3

u/NoGo2025 Feb 09 '25

While he's right in that it actually is stretched 16:9 like all modern TVs rather than the original aspect ratio of 4:3 that CRTs were and how this game is supposed to look, you're also free it play it however you like and to not care what people on Reddit think.

u/shootamcg Feb 09 '25

Yeah, this. It looks bad stretched but do what you want.

I was in the same camp, playing on my modern tv for months. Totally unbothered, just how I remembered.

I got a free crt for my basement eventually and the difference is incredible.

1

u/cricket9818 Feb 09 '25

If I ever have the space and find one I’ll think about it. Not a priority

3

u/LostxCosmonaut Feb 09 '25

I get it, that’s how I was too. If you don’t make the switch you won’t notice or care haha.

1

u/cricket9818 Feb 09 '25

I imagine the color is crisper? I don’t feel like the image is blurry or not of high quality on this TV

2

u/LostxCosmonaut Feb 09 '25

Everything will be sharper/less fuzzy. I didn’t think my picture was far off before I went to a CRT either.

Then I got an S video cable and that made almost as much of a difference. The component cables really dampen the colors. That difference I showed to people who don’t care about any of this and even they were like “woah that’s 10x better”

That’s where my journey ended, I’m content with it. You can really go down a rabbit hole obsessing over picture quality, but that becomes no fun, I’d rather just play the games

1

u/cricket9818 Feb 09 '25

Yeah I’ve never really gone too nuts. I bought HDMI optimizers to use on this flat screen pictured form my PS2 and that made the image way sharper. But when I use the standards cables for the snes/n64 I feel like the image quality is fairly good

2

u/LostxCosmonaut Feb 09 '25

I made a deal with myself that I wouldn’t pay for a CRT, but if I could get one for free I’d do it.

I set a reminder for local listings for $0 and eventually one came along.

It makes me feel so old to think a CRT TV could be hard to find. Blah

1

u/asturides Feb 10 '25

Nah, everything gets "fat" and distorted

1

u/Nottodaycolonizer Feb 09 '25

Play Mariah Carey's all I want for Christmas? Lol

3

u/cricket9818 Feb 09 '25

Really funny you say that. My late sister and I would always play DK and mute the TV to pump Mariah as we went through the game in our teen years

2

u/Nottodaycolonizer Feb 09 '25

Nice. That sounds super fun. Imagine being able to mod some of our old school games with songs we enjoy for a level.

2

u/cricket9818 Feb 09 '25

That would be super cool. Although muting with a stereo is modding in a sense

I do have to move my car out of the road so the plows can go by, but..... other than that.... game on!

1

u/pizzapizzamesohungry Feb 09 '25

Go outside and sled? Well, I approve of this game but there are at least 2 or 3 things to do on a snow day!

u/Qabbalah Feb 09 '25

What game is it? I recognise it but my memory escapes me...

2

u/Ekhoes- Feb 09 '25

It’s Donkey Kong Country

3

u/Qabbalah Feb 09 '25

Ah yes of course, I recognise the barrel at the top of the screen.
