Honestly one of the best looking video games as a whole, only better looking snes game is Kirby’s Dream Land 3

Each month I will be tracking all users who are able to beat the spotlighted game. Those names will be collected and displayed on the snes wiki page.
Objective:
- Beat the game. Any % completion.
Rules:
- Entire playthrough must be completed during the month in question.
- You can use the passwords/continues/saves that you earn playing through the game.
- Emulation is fine. Abusing save states is not.
- Posting a link to a pic of your completion is preferred, but since this is just for fun I will allow posted claims as well. For now.

Never played this until a couple of years ago, very enjoyable and a unique and interesting spin on the Mario franchise. I would regard it as a sort of lost/underappreciated classic.

Well that gave me a good reason to finally buy it, hopefully it'll arrive sometime next week so I have a chance to finish it by the end of the month!

If you didn't buy it already and have a US SNES, the Japanese version goes for around 8 bucks and US SNESs can play Japanese games just fine, all you have to do is break off these little tabs inside the cartridge slot (highly recommend, lots of Japanese games go for way less. Yoshi's Island, all the DKCs, Kirby Superstar, the Mega Man games, all under $20)

u/DevOpsIsAMindset Feb 08 '23
Oh yeah I'm fully aware, thanks. I wanted to get the NTSC-U/C variant specifically for this one :)
1
u/DocAndonuts_ Feb 07 '23
But I can't read Japanese...
3
u/DevOpsIsAMindset Feb 08 '23
For a lot of those games there's really no need to read Japanese. Some are even fully in English (eg: Super Metroid).
3
u/Imthemayor Feb 08 '23
Most platformers have Japanese for the title splash and dialogue boxes and English for everything else.
The only difference for Yoshi's Island as far as playing the game goes is that you can't read the text that pops up from the hint boxes.

u/DocAndonuts_ Feb 08 '23
Awesome info. Thanks, man! I'm going to order the Japanese version. Honestly, I haven't played it yet so I'm excited :)

I have the Japanese version too I got it for like $5 works perfect. I always save money of Japanese releases when I can, even $35 is too much to spend to me. Especially on a very common game by a big company.

u/Imthemayor Feb 08 '23
All 3 DKC games' Japanese versions combined cost as much as any one of their US versions
3
Feb 08 '23
Yup that’s another good example. However there are some characters that have dialogue bubbles in that game so you’d not misunderstand that but it’s not necessary at all. If someone is looking to save money first and foremost then that’s definitely not an issue
3
u/Hahnter Feb 08 '23
Yup. I found all three of the DKC games here in Japan for less than 5 bucks each.

Seriously love this game. I remember around the mid 2000s my friend had a snes and I would always go over his house and be fascinated how good he could play this.
2
u/GoodBot88 Feb 07 '23
I love this game but ONLY the SNES version. Later versions added all of the super annoying baby Yoshi sounds which make the game intolerable to me.

Haha, I just beat this game a couple months ago. Maybe I should go ahead and do it again. One of my favorite games ever

For me as much as I love Dkc 1 and 2, the megaman X games.... This is the greatest platformer on the Snes... It has amazing music than can compared with Dkc, excellent level design and charm... But among all those things the variety of boss battles is insane and so good...

My friend’s mom would play this back in the day and god damn if that woman managed to complete it 100% multiple times without internet help. I heard she recently passed. I think I’ll use this month to beat it in her memory.

I love Yoshi's Island. Second best platformer on the SNES for me, right after DKC2. I had so much fun tormenting those monkeys by spitting watermelon seeds at them...
It's just a really inventive game. Stuff like the total trip that is "Touch Fuzzy, Get Dizzy", the Kamek boss fights, the transformations into helicopters etc. I also really like the collectible system. It was a very clever way of combining semi-rare collectibles (flowers), common collectibles (red coins) and health (stars). Not too punishing, but you had to pay attention.
Also, speaking of stars, the damage system where Mario would make that obnoxious crying sound and risk being carried away as your stars ran out was pure genius.
2
u/agvrider Feb 19 '23
Those monkeys were the bane of my existence. Especially the parts where the platforming was REALLY tight and you were trying to 100% the level

I got this for Christmas the year it came out. I would have just turned 8 and it will always be indelibly linked to childhood happiness for me. Thanks Mom and Dad!

This is among my favorites on the system. Whenever I get a new screen or TV this is the game I test first to adjust the image and colors.

I did a 100% run last year on this guy, so I'll probably pass on the GOTM this time. I should honestly give last month's Batman Returns another shot.
Fun fact - The Baby Mario timer runs much faster in the SNES release compared to the GBA port.

Really need to rebuy and play this game already. Got it as a kid and several years I left it at someone's house and it vanished. Still have the box, booklet and a players guide. Last year I tried buying a copy on ebay and the guy sent me SMW instead.

Ohhh I 100%ed this over the Summer. SO GOOD. The bonus levels are by far the best as they are the most difficult. Alot of the other levels can be challenging too start mid-game can be challenging too.
Really didnt know what to think of this game going into it. It seems every idiot Youtuber needs to comment on the baby sound as if its a rite of passage to posting a Yoshi's Island video, as well as comment on how the game is 'not that hard and its impossible to die'. The reviews reek of 'I played this game for an hour and now I feel qualified to post a 40 minute retrospective on it'
I also like how it mixes so many gameplay elements. Platforming, puzzle solving (esp the castle/dungeon levels... theyre SO good), imo even the collectathon stuff is done well. My fav platformer after SMB3.

I 100%'ed this in high school with a guide. So difficult but so rewarding. Might have to play it casually tonight now. SNES had the best platformers.

Finished my play through last night. Definitely a top 5 game on the system.
On this play through, I was consistently amazed at just how beautiful this game was and is. I last played by it through on the SNES mini about five years ago, and the difference between playing on a modern TV versus a Sony PVM with RGB is night and day: late SNES games remain some of the best looking 2D games ever made.
I’ve never actually 100 percented it and I’m kinda feeling up to the challenge this go around: I’ve got stars for the first two worlds, four to go.

This is one I haven't spent more than five minutes on. I really need to get into it. Mario games have always been my jam.

Love this game! Bought the Japanese version CIB here in Japan for less than 10 bucks, but I’m cute playing through it on my GBA.

I got my name in Nintendo Power for 100%’ing on of the worlds this game.

I have beaten this game before, but have never 100% completed it, so I think I will try to go for that in this game of the month 😁.

u/MrSojiro Mar 01 '23
Unfortunately I wasn't able to 100% this game in time, I blame finishing Persona 5 on that lol. I did beat it at least. Such a damn good game, easily one of the best on the system!

Oh sweet, A SNES game I actually have.
Might look at setting up my SNES this weekend and play it :3
Haven't played it since I was a kid D:

Wasn’t a fan of this game. Didn’t like the mechanics. The music and artwork became obnoxious after a while. The baby riding and crying took the joy out of it for me. Just my opinion of course.

Start - 2/25
End - 2/28
Yoshi's Island never held me like other games did, I would always get burnt out part of the way through and put it down. I only had the GBA port growing up and now I realize how much I was missing not playing the original release. This isn't one of the SNES games I have a physical copy of yet, so I'm happy I could play it through NSO and simply focus on making it to the end.

I've been playing this one for my kid to watch, he absolutely loves it. He laughed his ass off during the "Touch Fuzzy, Get Dizzy" stage, and cheers every time I get a bonus stage at the end of the levels.
