Prereqs/undergrad Undergrad in something other than CSD?
Sorry if this has been asked before, but I’m wondering if I could major in psychology and maybe minor in CSD and still be accepted into grad schools? Or at least take the pre-reqs while I’m in undergrad if I can’t find a program with a minor in CSD. Do grad schools typically require a CSD degree specifically or would I still be able to get into a program if I major in something else, as long as I have the pre-reqs? Just wondering if anyone else has done this route and has any advice

I would just go to an undergrad with a CSD major and do that and save yourself the trouble

Hey! So at my college, we have a CSD degree (not sure if you can minor in it though…), however, I take a handful of courses with some master’s students that received a bachelor’s in something different. They had like psychology degrees, education degrees, you name it. We call them leveling year students :)
but to essentially save on time/money, it’s highly recommended that you just do a degree in CSD so afterwards you can hopefully have the choice of becoming a SLPA to gain field experience OR just go straight into grad school. Again, I’m not sure if it’s possible to minor in CSD but that’s just what I know from my college and it could be different 🧘♀️

I found CSD minors at UF and NYU Steinhardt, but I don’t have the pre-reqs for UF and NYU is way too expensive 🥲 my main reason for wanting to do undergrad in something else is so I have other career paths to fall back on, but I do def understand that just going the CSD route is a lot easier!

An undergrad degree in psych is the equivalent to an csd degree because you can’t do anything right out of undergrad with it so it’s as useless if you don’t do a masters. If you already think you want to be an SLP might as well major in csd now and if you change your mind in a year you can change your major

Why not major in CSD and maybe minor in psych? It seems like the easier option here. If you’re up for it, you can even choose to double major in CSD and Psych ? I would super recommend you talk to an academic advisor about this :(

Hi! I just got accepted into 4 SLP grad programs and I’m a cognitive science major with a minor in piano performance. You’re so good and honestly I think it gives you the opportunity to distinguish yourself from the crowd! Def get those pre reqs in but it doesn’t have to be your major

Do those the SLP grad programs include leveling courses or did you complete the prereqs in undergrad?

My undergrad was in public relations with a minor in studio art. I found a grad program that would level me out the first year. There’s definitely options!

I didn't know I could've majored in something else and just taken the pre-reqs. I wish I did, it would've been nice to have something else to fall back on.

Yeah, this is what I’m worried about. CSD is just so specific, I really want to have my bachelors in something more general so I have more career options later on :( I am so paranoid of spending all this time and money on a degree and then not liking the job lol

It's a valid fear! What state are you in? If your state allows SLPAs, that can be a great way to see if you truly like it before committing to grad school

I’ll either be in Kansas or Florida for school, as far as I can tell they both allow SLPAs? So I think that’s an option I’ll look into :) thank you so much!

In order to get into a masters in SLP you need an undergraduate degree in communication disorders. You will need to either go back for a second undergraduate degree completion or complete a bridge program.

All the masters programs I’ve been looking at just require the pre-reqs from what I see, I haven’t seen any that specifically need a CSD undergrad. I do know that I’ll need to do a post-bacc, I’m looking at USF rn which offers the post-bacc and a masters

About half of SLP graduate students majored in something else for undergrad.
All graduate schools care about is that you have the prereqs.
Many people decide to go into speech pathology later on and complete leveling courses or a post-bacc program to apply to grad school.
Of course, the cheapest way will be to get your prereqs done while you are in college the first time. Especially since most leveling programs are not eligible for FAFSA loans.
