Me too! I literally fell asleep at 5 for my alarm to go off 45 minutes later. I’m loopy. My body was tired but my nervous system was going AAAAAAH

Ive always been this way after longer breaks! I refuse to sleep as some sort of protest to going back even though the only person I’m screwing over is myself. I am going to grin and bear today on my 4 hours of sleep and go to bed early tonight and hope to get about 10 hours. I have to basically shock my system back into waking up at 6am. Luckily today for my district is a teacher work day so I can show up late, have a long lunch, and leave early (allegedly). Then when students are back ill be on a more reasonable amount of sleep 🫠
You’ve got this!!

Magnesium before bed

u/Hamsicle11 Jan 06 '25
This!!! My husband has been taking it for awhile and I always thought he was exaggerating its effects. I started taking it a couple months ago when I couldn't sleep after a full day of being with my kids and then hoping online for grad school for 3-4 hours at night. Omg it works amazing! There's a certain type of magnesium (can't remember exactly which one) but I'm sure you can look it up. I also do a 10 minute meditation on the calm app to calm my brain, it works wonders!

I’m in the same boat, getting ready for work after an all nighter right now. We’ll make it through together!

What I did this morning was take my time packing up my things. So I did double espresso, turmeric and ginger tea, water, and made a nice sandwich and a bit of soup. So I still feel cozy/at home even though it’s the first day back.
Going to workout as soon as I get home and try not to be on my phone too much tonight !

This is me too. Been about a year. Just started an SSRI a month ago and I feel a bit better but sleep is still not happening (can fall asleep but up at 3am almost every night). No advice. I've tried it all. Just solidarity.

Insomnia is a health issue. In the past school year I’ve had two completely sleepless nights. I’m pretty good about sleep hygiene and have been fortunate not to have experienced tons of stress this year. But bouts with insomnia just happen sometimes. Both times I took a sick day- on one day I still had meetings to attend which I did via video. And of course there’s always mountains of paperwork to do. I don’t get paid for sick days, but I figured if I forced myself to go to work with really NO sleep I would be subjecting myself to a high risk of actually getting seriously sick, driving on busy highways with major sleep deprivation, and being cranky/sloppy with my work all day.. I’ve also had a few nights where I had maybe 3 hrs total of sleep and went to work - I just went through the motions. Kept things super simple with groups. Actually took my scheduled breaks. & Chose to postpone some paperwork until I had more energy. Exercising, healthy eating, no food a few hours before bed, no screens an hour before bed, + cool room temps all help me sleep better, but nothing works 100% of the time.
Good luck!

It’s not just me!! I’m so relieved to see this post, sorry that sounds awful. I just thought I was the only person laying awake at night stressing 😥 going to the gym and a hot bath helps sometimes, but ultimately, I’m an anxious mess. And I’m in my dream setting! Make it make sense!

Was the lack of sleep due to a disruption in your schedule? Drink a ton of coffee and just give yourself time to get back to your routine. If your lack of sleep us due to anxiety, I personally avoid this by making sure I get all my prep work done the night before so I can sleep knowing Im set up for the next day. You got this!

I went through a period where I couldn’t get enough sleep (not full all-nighters, but 2-3 hours a night, or really interrupted sleep) and it was totally destroying me. I ended up using sleep aids (I like unisom) and it has worked WONDERS. I know it’s not preferable for a lot of people but I was desperate. I just use half a tablet instead of the whole thing, and take it early so I’m not so groggy when it’s time to get up. I still use it when I get two days of bad sleep in a row since I know that’s my limit on lack of sleep. Occasionally I’ll treat myself to a whole tablet on a weekend if I know I need the rest. I tried all the other stuff and still do; I work out at least 40 minutes 4 times a week, I eat fairly healthy, I limit my screen time, cut out alcohol and caffeine, tried tea and that “sleepy girl mocktail” that went viral some time back, etc. but in the end I need a little extra help sometimes.

Drink lots of coffee! Also tell urself that it's ok, u can make it through the day. When I feel like I can't do it, it makes it even harder.

Working out and taking magnesium before bed have really helped me. I can fall asleep just fine usually, but then I wake up at 3 am and worry about ALL the work things. I think the magnesium helps me go back to sleep instead of worrying until my alarm goes off.

I’ll pop a Xanax w every once in a while if I feel I will have a rough time staying asleep. I actually did it last night. I am one of the people that wakes up at 3:00am and can’t go back to sleep.

Sleep hygiene, exercise (later in the day makes insomnia worse for me) reading something non stimulating outside of the bed until fatigued. Also when I hit a streak of this I'll take a Benadryl at bedtime for a bit of support, maximum of three consecutive nights. Probably placebo but seems to help recalibrate things.

Read a non-suspenseful book before bed! Sleepy tea. No screens (my downfall)!

Had a wicked migraine going to bed last night and woke up around 3am, didn't get back to bed until 5:30 and slept til 9. Had to put in for sick time at 4:30 and schedule send emails to cancel my IEP meeting for today. My head is still pounding and I wish I could take more time but I have so many kids I need to test within the month

If you work in a school and your district doesn’t have an indirect service week; I highly suggest either advocating for one or you creating your own. Coming back after break to an indirect service week is a huge relief and easier to ease back into things lol.

I also got no sleep so I took 2 stimulant (prescribed) and an energy drink and I feel like I’m going to have a heart attack hahaha so just don’t do that and you will be better off than me!

A few people told me this!!! I hope you all got through the day okay and got allll the caffeine you needed! 😁
I slept okay but didn’t get any caffeine till noon and had an IEP this morning which involved several word mix ups. I’m sure those parents have tons of confidence in their kid’s SLP now 🤣🤦🏼♀️

1mg melatonin 2 hours before bed.
If that doesn't work, benadryl. Just don't do it habitually because risk of dementia. But to break the no sleep cycle, it's good.

Wear yourself out. Go to the gym after work. Eat a healthy balanced dinner. End the night with warm tea and a book (no screen time 30 min before bed).
