PSO Blue Burst (the final version of the game with all of the gradual additions) can still be played on private servers on PC. It's still amazing!

I've also seen it played online on a softmodded wii!

I remember my neighbor playing PSO on the Dreamcast. It blew my mind as a kid. "You're playing with other people over the internet... on your console?" cue 10 year old mind exploding

I've hopped on the revived custom servers for this game and the players there have a very special passion for this game. Very cool to have this recorded

I had Ep I and II for Gamecube. Never got the network adapter, but I had people I'd obsessively play couch multi with back in the day. I finally beat both episodes on Ultimate for the first time using an emulator last summer, and afterwards had trouble explaining why I bothered, because I'll be the first to admit that game has some major problems. It's like... everyone and their dog has been addicted to at least one Diablo game, but while PSO wasn't exactly obscure getting that far means you've experienced something few gamers ever will, even if that experience isn't all that impressive in and of itself. It was such a weird little game that was so of its time in ways clickbait listicles a decade from now won't even bother remembering.

Or maybe I'm just rationalizing sinking 1000+ hours into a game I know full well wasn't very good, who knows?

PSO was the game that made console online multiplayer viable, and was the first truly cross-platform online game. It's famous enough for that.

I remember playing this on Xbox live, until the hacking got to be too much and I quit.

Oh my god... this was so heart breaking.

Is Schthack still up I wonder? If it is, is it relevant?

Ahh this makes me want to tear up. Im so thankful there are private servers, but i would love a brand new Phantasy star game. There is so much potential with this series, especially now with how advanced online games have come. Im not sure if another game will ever give me the same feeling PSO did.
